Buddhists don't believe in god?
I only bring it up because I didn't and my mother in law is a Buddhist.
They keep confusing people because when asked they often say they do believe in god because it's easier than having to explain what their spirituality is. But really they are agnostics.
The Buddhists figured out there weren't any gods hundreds of years before Christ was born. Pretty amazing. And they invented abstract painting and minimalist architecture thousands of years before The Bauhaus or JMW Turner.
Fascinating stuff, eh?

There’s some kind of Buddhist place at Lindholme Hall, a couple of miles behind Moorlands prison
-
It could be a retreat. They do a lot of meditating and they have these retreats to get away from it all.
My inlaw is the kind of Buddhist who meditates for about 2 mins and then says, that's enough of that, I've got some cleaning to do!

What ever it is, they come from all over the World, especially America
-
That's interesting Filo, it must be something special then.
There are different branches, Zen Buddhism and wot not. I would've probably heard of it if it was to do with the side of it the family are into. I might ask about it.
-
It's a Tibetan temple and retreat. It is a different branch.
Just looking at their website, it seems they have a top man who is highly respected, that'll be the draw.
And let's face it, if you are American and want to get away from it all, Doncaster probably seems like the end of the earth!

I only knew of it because we pick people up from Hatfield Station in taxi
-
Well there you go. Doncaster is a renowned spiritual centre. Who knew you'd go to Hatfield to find enlightenment?!
-
So I went all the way to the Indian Himalayas for nothing
-
Andy Butler should send the Rovers players there to find enlightenment before games when he's away doing other team duties.
No Butts, it's gotta be Buddha.
-
If anyone remembers the gas rig fire in the 80’s on Hatfield Moors, Boots Hanson was brought in to put it out, the retreat is not far from there
-
Reyt, we're all going t'do some meditation and chanting now lads...
Ommmm.. We hate Rothr ommmm... We hate Rothr ommmm...

My mother in law looks like a Buddha, she's Definately not spiritual though...
-
Treats her body like a temple...
The Taj Mahal.
Boom tsch. So old, I'll get me coat.
-
We bought our Grandaughter a chocolate Buddha for Easter the other year. One minute it was there and the next it was gone, except for the empty wrapper. When we asked her where it had gone she just looked as if Buddha wouldn't melt in her mouth.
I'm here all week.

I am told that it was Buddhists who came up with the concept of high viz clothing too.

If anyone fancies a nosey, they have an annual open day and fete in June (in normal times). I've been a few times ans its a good afternoon out - once witnessed the bizarre sight of two Buddhist monks enthusiastically playing "Splat the Rat".

BTW for any that are interested there is a logic to how the ancient Buddhists came to the conclusion there are no gods.
Briefly, they noticed men turn to gods in times of great fear and stress. Rather than take that as evidence of the existence of a god - there are no atheists in the trenches argument, they took the view that men created the idea of gods as a desperate form of comfort. They figured the real problem was coping with fear.
So Buddha tries to overcome fear, with calm and an understanding that there are things you can't control but you can cope, replacing fear with rational understanding. Hence all the meditation.
This will be why Buddhism often comes out as the belief system having the most content followers.
Having noticed there is no evidence for the existence of gods, you have to wonder why they didn't notice there is no evidence that reincarnation takes place... Which is a big part of what they do believe in.

buddhists in Burma must have missed a few classes RD

If by that you mean it doesn't stop Buddhists persecuting other groups, then you'd be right. There are plenty of examples, Sri Lankan Buddhist were brutal with the Tamils for instance.

yep there are extremes in all people

Christians have been at each other's throats over minor differences in the church service for centuaries.
Russian atheists have murdered millions.
It's just one of those things.
