We had four players who have come at least partly through our youth system playing in the same league match? (Jones, Amos, Greaves, Horton)
Has it happened since 1997-98? Did anyone else play with Green, Ravenhill and Jamie Price? I know Green was not originally with our youth system but I think he played at some stage in it.
-
Do you mean Robert Gill rather than Ravenhill? We signed Ravenhill from Barnsley in his late teens/early twenties.
-
Yes you are right Nick, my mistake. I think Gill only played once or twice in the FL, so that makes four ex youth playing in a FL match even less likely.
Have I missed some players?
-
October 2003 away at Kidderminster. Rob O’Brien played in line up with Price and Green.
-
Green joined us age 16 .
-
According to Soccerbase, Gill's only FL appearance for us was a cameo sub outing for the last 15 mins of our 5-1 trouncing of Bristol Rovers in Oct 2003. It says Leo came on for Rob O'Brien in that Kidderminster match and Gill wasn't on the bench.

I wonder if we ever had 4 ex-trainees (or more likely, current trainees...) in a side in 97/98?
Against Rotherham in April 98 we had Rob Better, Maurice Hilton and Mark Hargreaves who I think we all trainees.
EDIT: Yep, later that month we somehow drew 0-0 vs Swansea. Those three plus Rob Debenham all played.
-
So does playing one or two games for the first team make it a successful transition from youth team to first team come on over the years its been garbage and the latest crop look no better
-
There was no agenda behind my OP. As a statto I was merely remarking that it is a long time this last happened, and I was not hinting towards any comment about how good or bad or youth system is or was.
-
April 2015 v Notts County?
M. Lund
J. Mackay
Middleton (sub)
Whitehouse (sub)
P. Mackay (unused sub)
-
Excellent DM4, many thanks  Had missed that.
Maybe there are some more end of season games in mid-table finish seasons that have been used to blood youngsters.

You have encouraged me to look for myself BST
As far as I can see no fewer than 5 played in that game at Swansea: Robert Betts, Rob Debenham, Mark Donnelly, Mark HAwthorne and Maurice Hilton.
Four of those 5 (not Debenham) played in the next game - the infamous end of season game versus Colchester.

Just for fun I thought I would try and choose a team of Rovers ex academy/youth players who went on to play for us:
Mark Samways
Steve Reed, Steve Lister. Russ Wilcox, Glyn Snodin
Terry Curran, Ian Snodin, Mark Rankine,
Peter Kitchen, Alan Warboys. Alick Jeffrey
Bench: Rufus Brevett, Brian Deane, Mike Elwiss, Paul Green, Daral Pugh, Steve Raffell, and Lewis Jones
Some really good players not making the squad such as Neil Woods, Brendan O'Callaghan, Graeme Watson, Steve Uzelac, Gavin Worboys, Nicky Limber, Glen Humphries......
-
Wilcox must hold some kind of record. A full 12 seasons between his first appearance and his next!
-
Wilcox, Mansfield away promotion season, re-arranged fixture because it had snowed a few days earlier in April

What about Alan Warboys, Dutch? He was in the same intermediate squad as Willie Watson and Dennis Leigh. Fred Taylor also played but never really hit the heights.

This team/squad would absolutely waltz this league we’re in now ,without a shadow of a doubt

Very much an outside chance mate.
They are all knocking on a bit, or sadly...... dead.
-
Well yeah perhaps you’re right, looking at squad there’s a lot of very popular players there, King Alick, Kitch, both Snodin brothers, Greeny, Alan Warboys, Big Bren, Terry Curran. It’s happens at most clubs that local or youth team lads are more popular than transferred in players

Only one in the last 20 years though.
