He's been scoring for fun in Scotland but that's... an odd one, to say the least. I guess their stats guys must have seen something we all missed.

One goal every 2.5 games for Motherwell this past season but yes, the Barnsley analytics people must see something in his numbers to give him that sort of deal.

Just turned 26 as well so he's out of Barnsley's usual age range. I hope he does well & wish him no ill will but I am baffled at this one.
As stated he must fit into some sort of bracket in terms of numbers etc.

He was pony when we had him - no goals in 9 appearances - but certain players suit different styles. He's got a 1 in 4 scoring record albeit with lower league clubs and he doesn't seem to like playing 90 minutes very often... Seems a strange one, but wait until he starts banging them in every week...
Perhaps the culture in Barnsley attracted him.

Barnsley won't be looking at that though. They'll be looking at things like his pressing, what areas he makes his runs into, successful dribbles, where he scores his goals from and so on. They've obviously seen based on the numbers that he'll fit in with their style of play and while it isn't a guaranteed winner they get more right than they do wrong over there.

It certainly raised my eyebrows .
That said I've learned to reserve judgment on some of our left field signings .
We picked up Callum Brittain from MK Dons last season for next to nowt and he was a phenomenal championship wing back .
Carlton Morris has been on loan all over the place from Norwich , two spells at Rotherham for instance , nobody seemed that bothered about him .
We pick him for £300k in January and he scores 7 championship goals and leads the front line magnificently .
If you get 10 championship goals out of Devante it's a fantastic return for the outlay which is what Moneyball is all about .

I cannot believe we know something the Dingles don’t - but this is a guy who has never played a single game in the Championship, let alone scored in the Championship. At 26 he would be a very late developer to say the least.

I'm pretty sure he would still be with us if there wasn't the pandemic.
He was out of contract and we had to cut costs, hardly a performance issue.

well the manager going takes them one pace towards the trappp door and the future suddenly isn't so bright for Devante .... more chance of him getting a good "vantege point" sat watching from the stands

Sadly he isn't a carbon copy of his father ..... more likely to get a bag full of coal :thumbdown:..... going "coal picking" on the Barnsley spoil heaps

The club looks at players in a totally different way to the majority of other clubs .
Devante has played most of his career up front but the data may say he can potentially perform very well in another role in a high pressing system or as part of a three up top that we went with last season
They don't all come off for us but the lad was a free agent so the club clearly feel he's worth a punt .

Good luck with that, he failed to convince me he was up to Lg.1 standard, never mind the Championship. I was even more surprised at his age, he seems to have been around for a long time. Hope the new manager does well for you.

Thanks Barmby , I'll be happy enough around mid table as I don't expect to be challenging the top 6 .
Hoping the new coach has us playing more football than last season even though it got us a play off place .

just seen Barnsley got a new manager on June 29th Markus Schopp
what's in a name you might say ... time will tell .
also noticed the old manager did a "pied piper" act to take Mowatt with him (yes we all knew he was going for over a year) but the destination

just been looking for the thread where i went on about relegation awaiting Barnsley pre-season and it's important this thread is read from the initial post - some of us could see what was ahead for them - but couldn't see what was going to happen to us :crying: when i went on about the trap door waiting for Barnsley -- with signings like Cole - but Coal at least has increased in value and our consolidation went up in smoke.

Got an unreal move after leaving Dingles. Just signed for West Brom on two year deal. Feasible chance of him being in the Premier League during that time.

He did well for Barnsley to be fair to him, but very surprised to see him get a Championship move at all, let alone sign for one of the bigger hitters. It's not as if he's gone to one of the newly promoted teams or a Millwall/Plymouth type who would probably typically make most of their signings from the lower divisions.

After seeing how he performed for us I’m amazed that he has gone on to get a deal at WBA.
