Title: Paul Mariner
Post by: RobTheRover on July 10, 2021, 09:33:17 am
Passed away from a brain tumor, 68 years old.

I was always Paul Mariner in 1980 in the school playground kick abouts.

RIP.

What a great centre forward he was. Always reminds me of 1982 World Cup after our long absence. What a start! Another one we were going to win!

RIP
I grew up in Plymouth until I moved to Donny in 1975. I used to watch him at Home Park and he was my idol at 10 years old. He had an amazing partnership with Billy Rafferty almost telepathic (bit like Kitchen & big Bren). A sad day for football.

My favourite period as a general football fan. I loved Paul Mariner.

My first time watching England at Wembley in 1981.   We needed to beat Hungary to qualify for the 1982 World Cup after a messy group stage.   Mariner scored the winner that night to send us through to our first World Cup since 1970….great memory for me - RIP Paul.

Baz.... You just cost me 2 hours of my life :) I started off following the link you gave to England-France in 82 (it still feels like only last week I watched it for real)  and I ended up watching 45 minutes of Ian Wright interviewing Denis Bergkamp. And that led me on to thinking about all the great Dutch players I've seen over the years: van Nistelrooy, van Persie, Marco van Basten, Arjen Robben, Ruud Gullit, Edwin van der Saar, Virgil van Dyke, Jaap Stam, Frank Rijkaard and the absolute master of them all, Johan Cruyff. And that list, of course, ignores 'second tier' players (lol!) of the calibre of Overmars, Kluivert, Jonny Rep, Rensenbrink, Koeman, Seedorf, Neeskens, the van der Kerkhof twins, Davids, Kroll, Kuyt, van Bommel, Haan, de Boer, Wijnaldum, Depay. The list never ends does it?

A trip down memory lane of course. But what a list! What talent! What artistry! What a country....

PS And I forgot Giovanni van Bronkhorst and Phillip Cocu!
