Unbelievable.
Just knocked out the Olympic champion no bother. In her only her second grand slam tournament at the age of 18 after only being given the opportunity as a wildcard at Wimbledon.
-
Astonishing performance. Talk about coming from nowhere.
First ever woman to come through qualifiers to the semi of the American Open. She's played 16 sets in the tournament and won every one.
-
Womens tennis is wide open at the moment with the Williams sisters aging, Osaka sadly struggling and Barty blowing hot and cold. Big chance to become a solid top 10 player for ER in the next couple of years plus grand slams are a lot more unpredictable in the womens game.
-
Both myself and my partner are massive tennis fans and we go to Wimbledon quite regularly and the O2 Arena in December .
Quite simply she's the best British female tennis player I've ever seen right now .
Phenomenal talent .
To be honest she should win this in my opinion , she's the best still in the tournament .
Absolutely unbelievable the progess she's made since Wimbledon in June .
I thought her forehand was a bit iffy at SW19 .
Certainly ain't now .
-
She's smart too having just got A* A levels in Maths and Economics
And good looking, Vogue is already featuring her.
This kid is going to be worth a fortune.

Not to mention a degree in tennis brains and how to completely take your opponent apart tactically .
She wants to leave the modelling stuff well alone .
Plenty of time for that when she's racked up 10 slam victories in my opinion .
Not be the first pretty female tennis player to focus on that way too much .

Gabrielle Sabitinni (that's going back a bit) never achieved as much as she might have in tennis but always earned more than the rest because she was a national hero and made so much from fashion.

She’s easily the best British female tennis player who’s not British, she less British than good old Maple syrup, or that other Canadian male tennis player, you know the one ….the one who looked like a Mountys mount….
Yeah she plays here and she may even spend her great as yet unearned wealth here, but she just ain’t British…..undoubted talent though!
I suppose this response will be angrily received, but Eh,oh…..

She came to this country as a two year old which is vastly different to Rudeski and more recently Konta .
She's also come through the LTA system in this country which basically equates to discovered , coached and funded by our system .
Born in Toronto but made in England .
It's more than good enough for me at the side of Rudeski and Konta .
-
Andy Murray went off to Spain to develop his tennis.
This girl is actually a product of the LTA. Which is as amazing as anything else.
-
Live on channel four tonight coverage starts from 8pm .
Last minute deal done with Amazon Prime which is good news .
Hard to call this final tonight to be honest .
Tough little cookie the Canadian lass who was seriously impressive in her semi final against a more powerful and experienced opponent .
Got three tight sets in this all day long and maybe decided on a couple of big points .

I’ll accept all that as her well earned credentials…….but she’s not British all the same, and that Jock pollock is just a Jock, he probably hates being tied to Britain because he already has an identity…..Scotch!
Lolololololol…having had this disagreement a million times makes nonetheless ignorant and …………….right!

But not the product of an English womb in an English hospital…..or even an English Dad…Cmon….she’s very possibly the finest adoptable child tennis protégé since Navratilova found out that she had an American bank account….

Nobody ever suggested the two time Wimbledon and US Open champion was ever anything other than Scottish .
He becomes British when he's two Olympic gold medals round his neck and goes and picks up the Davis Cup .
You might want to try taking those off him .
Good Luck with that .

I'd have loved Henman to have had the career Murray did but unfortunately it wasn't to be .
I'm not going to shy away from the fact I'd sooner an Englishman win over a Scotsman .
However when your starved of any kind of men's tennis success all your life then hanging my hat on Murray wasn't too difficult .
However I still struggle with the fact that half of the Centre Court crowd and on the hill wanted Federer to win in Andy's first Wimbledon final .
I never got that but perhaps you maybe do ?

Nobody ever suggested the two time Wimbledon and US Open champion was ever anything other than Scottish .
He becomes British when he's two Olympic gold medals round his neck and goes and picks up the Davis Cup .
You might want to try taking those off him .
Good Luck with that .
C’mon now tyke…
I might av put the shit sandwich on the buffet but I trusted you at least to give it a wee sniff ( that last bit was said in a Scotch-British accent )…before taking a bite!
Look ..I’m gone , ……….enjoy ya afternoon of drinking fine Romanian wine and Chinese pork balls , ………… I hope she beats that Canadian in the final , however it might get a bit expensive when I fly the Flags ( see what just happened tyke?) ….we funnin!
I think he ( Murray ) had made some pro scotch statement somewhere during the less financial part of his life……and the English just didn’t forget….
Like you I look forward to a true English Male/Female winning a tournament just so we can open up a priveledged versus Poor discussion….let’s face it , ya gotta be middle class and of wealthy parentage to just afford the whites lol
Enjoy your afternoon and that bird winning tneet!
Wimbledon is the only tournament in the world where you have to wear whites and the tradition sits right with 99% of us .
Tennis is available to everyone , free for juniors at Barnsley Tennis Club and there were plenty playing in Hillsborough Park when I past the other night at 9pm with the floodlights on .
Yep the elitist tag does exist but nothing like it's portrayed .
The truth is our weather is the biggest obstacle to producing top talent .
If you camp out in Wimbledon Park overnight for tickets next morning you'll unlikely to see a more down to earth set of people .
All tennis fans from all walks of life who love the game and tournament .
There is a class element amongst the Wimbledon debenture holders but believe me they are a huge minority in the grand scheme of the whole tournament .
You'll not find them on court 14 because the tennis fans are out there and there's more folk on the outside courts and in the grounds than on the two show courts .
-
Tyke you've dashed the vision of a Barnsley fan, flat cap, collar up against the wind with fag behind the ear .................. to strawbs and cream, centre court and sunshine!!!
You surprise me Sydney even Billy Casper ( David Bradley ) went on to perform Shakespeare .
:woohoo: :woohoo: :woohoo:

She's smart too having just got A* A levels in Maths and Economics
And good looking, Vogue is already featuring her.
This kid is going to be worth a fortune.
Not to mention a degree in tennis brains and how to completely take your opponent apart tactically .
She wants to leave the modelling stuff well alone .
Plenty of time for that when she's racked up 10 slam victories in my opinion .
Not be the first pretty female tennis player to focus on that way too much .

It is the weather that holds British tennis back. And a lack of facilities.
In Germany there are indoor tennis courts all over the place. They are still few and far between in this country.

Nationality is increasingly going to be a difficult thing to pin down, as people move around the globe more. Quite a few of my friends from school have kids now, with grandparents who live abroad. Think how many England footballers have the option of representing other countries these days.
Emma Raducanu might have an exotic background but as a kid all she's known is the South of England growing up and school. If you were to ask her which country is home she'd say the UK... Though I find with many kids like this, if they live in the South East, very often they identify with being from London the most. London is a different country.
-
Win win for me tonight what ever the result. Sort of British lass v Canadian- Filipino lass. My Mrs is Pinoy and kids Brit/Filipino duel nationality and we live in the Philippines when not in the Middle East with work.

You ask kids in Donny were they are born and they would probably say England…..I’m English first and foremost as I suspect are you…..then again your first name could be thames and your just here by default……
There goes them Meds again…..I’ll probably see that Donny won 5 nil today and wake up on the landing clutching a box of cornflakes…..it is what it is…..for another 3 weeks I’m told…lol
-
I grew up in Donny and both my parents were from the area. At Junior school I had one mate whose parents were Egyption, one whose Dad was Canadian and had spent a few years in Kuwait before arriving in Doncaster and one who had British parents but was born in Kenya and spent his early years there. It's not certain whether they would have identitified as being English. Funny thing is though, as a kid I never thought to ask them.

Not a tennis fan but how has a thread set up to acknowledge and celebrate the incredible achievement of an 18 year old from this country descended into a shameful, xenophobic questioning of her nationality and right to call herself British??
Unreal.
-
If it was anyone else, I'd excuse the cess pit shite on here as being down to the painkillers. But if that's the case, he's been on them for a decade.

Raducanu takes the first set in the Final.
-
Just carrying on in the same manner.
One more set will do it.
-
Fernandez just broke serve to go 2-1 ahead in the second set.
-
Amazing tennis from such young players. 3-2 to the Brit now.
-
One of the greatest moments for English tennis. Probably for English sport in general.
-
What a fabulous sporting moment for Emma Raducanu and for British Sport. She will be a champion for many years to come.
-
Remarkable.
-
Just astonishing. And she made it look inevitable.
-
Unbelievable, just before presenting the trophy they give her the cheque for winning. Its just not Wimbledon
-
Theres your spoty winner right there

Theres your spoty winner right there
Get your money on her before they close the betting!

Ain't that one of the GREAT British sporting moments .
Absolutely made up for her .
Isn't she just wonderful .
The start tonight of one of the great sporting rivalries which was badly needed in the women's game these two are going to be butting heads for the next decade .
Fernandez ain't going away anytime soon , she's one tough young lady .
Massive respect for the gutsy Canadian .
-
Well at least one Brit likes a US court .

I'm here all week btw .

Unreal.
This. Reading through this thread reminds me why I never come into the Off Topic section anymore.
Anyway, incredible achievement by Emma Raducanu - this is one of the greatest achievements in the history of Tennis regardless of her status as a British athlete. The way she has coolly dispatched everyone in front of her on the way to the trophy is remarkable for anyone, much less an 18 year old playing only her fourth senior tournament. She's set to be the next sporting icon from these shores. Fernandez was excellent as well and will surely be back on this stage again too.

Fortunately they are a small, small minded minority RA and we tend to drown them in their own shite. It was a great match, made even better by the promise of a rise in British tennis.
added: I shouldn't really stoop to their irrational, scared, immature little britisher view of the world .......... but sometimes I do.
-
A big well done to the young girl and her quite amazing achievement, let’s hope she has opened the doors for success and can inspire a new generation to step up, !
-
A quite incredible achievement.
-
I'd not watched any tennis since before Covid, but I really got into that final.
Two brilliant young players; it was a shame one of them had to lose.
Well done Emma, you did your country proud.
