A lot will not be interested in this game, but I see it as important in our teams development especially after the win we had today in the league game.
I know a lot will disagree with me, but I would play as many of our team that played today again on Tuesday injury allowing of course.
My reasoning I believe the players need to play games together, and get more used to the pattern of play, the way their team mates play and their strengths and weaknesses, the more they play together the sooner we will see the true capabilities of this side, something I feel we are a long way off seeing the best of them at the moment, we are still work in progress.
What team Manchester City put out is in the lap of the gods, but have not really looked to take this competition by storm in the past, which they could undoubtedly do if they wished to do so, lets hope they pick another night to do so.
So what would you do? and Why?
Are you going to the game?
Did the Rotherham game finish your interest in the competition for another year?
Do you see the game as important to our teams development?
Lots to discuss about this game, please have your say.
-
Fully agree Selby, play our strongest lineup and give then game time together, it can only improve our team play and get these players fitter.
They all look like they are 25% below where they should be, an improvement in this area would be massive for our general play and creativity.
-
No idea what to expect from City in terms of how good their U23's will be i'm imagining they will be pretty decent and are probably favourites.
I'd play our best available team as well. Only potential changes are Anderson (if he's still recovering from the injury) and i'd maybe play Seaman ahead of Hiwula.
-
Teams like your City's, Chelsea's and United's are like the football equivalent of the North Sea factory fishing ships, hoovering up all the talent in this country and Europe, and then jettisoning them to all corners when the time is right and they look like being just "Average" players.
Hope we can give them a good game for our benefit.
-
and why did the stadium announcer today just announce them as "Manchester City" and not "Manchester City under 23's " just a thought :)
-
Commercially savvy?
Every little bit extra helps :)

Think he will make a few changes for this game but not loads. Don’t think Dodoo will start so maybe give Cukur minutes, Barlow may also come in for Hiwula to give him minutes. Bostock will probs come back in to the midfield as well as Greaves I reckon. Wouldn’t be too surprised to see Rowe rested and maybe olowu or Blythe coming in for Anderson aswell.
-
Bailey, I would say that Dodoo, Hiwula, and Anderson all need minutes to get in the swing of things after yesterday.
Jones in goal and Seaman wide right would be my changes, and see how the game develops for others to get game time.
-
If we want to qualify pasted the group stage then we must win the games against Manchester City U21 and Scunthorpe to stand a chance. Both Rotherham and Manchester City U21 have won their first matches. We have the worst goal difference. Winning both games will not guarantee us going through, but will give us a chance.
Therefore a game we should not take lightly play the best team we can. We must try for another win and a confidence booster. Manchester City U21 have already beat Scunthorpe 3. 0 in the competition.
-
A lot of Man City's best young players will be out on loan like Matt Smith at Hull, so we should have a decent chance if we take it seriously.
-
With the players they have at U21 and U23 some players going on loan won’t make a difference. The Scunthorpe team they played in August did have a lot of young players I have just checked. But we would be foolish to take this game lightly in our position.
-
Don't forget there playing Wycombe as well mid week
-
I’d look to get another 45 minutes into Dodoo and definitely Hiwula. Give Galbraith and Smith a rest. No need to risk Anderson in my opinion, or Rowe, or Knoyle, or Close. Give Olowu a full game and Jones needs these cup games to gain experience.
-

Jones in goal and Seaman wide right would be my changes, and see how the game develops for others to get game time.
don’t think Dodoo will play because he played 90 yesterday and Cukur needs minutes so think he will be on the bench, think with anderson only just coming back from injury he will be rested for Saturday. I would start Hiwula but not sure if he will with Barlow also needing minutes. Would rest Rowe and bring in Horton and wouldn’t be too surprised to see Williams rested because he was playing with an injury, not sure if he’s still got that niggle or not.
-
If you can pop along to watch the young kids at City play your own club I'd advise you to do so .
We played them pre season at the City academy although they added Ake, Diaz , Fernadhino , Cancello and Mahrez and then brought Gundogan on .
They were a joy to watch and beat us easily 4-0 .
A humbling but enjoyable drubbing if that makes any kind of sense .
-
It’s got to be a game, where the players who haven’t started, get some time on the field.
The league has to be a priority at the minute. We need those players sharper ,in case they are needed for the league games.
As much as you want to win every game, you have to use at least some of your squad players for this type of game.
Rowe for a start should be rested . It needs to be a mixed side of usual starters and players who need a game.
-
This game is ideal to get some players a bit more up to speed, such as Vilca. Who i didn't think did that badly v Morecambe tbh.
Play some youngsters too and hopefully Wellens will use the match as a tool for helping the new lads gel a bit more, get a bit more fitness into some and to see more of some younger players.
I will be going to the game, although personally i think the trophy is a joke and has been completely devalued by the introduction of the U21 sides.
First time in the East Stand too.
-
My hope is that at least one of Dodoo, Hiwula, Barlow or Cukur scores their first goal for the club in a competitive match.
-
It's a shame we're back to three subs, assuming it is in this comp? As said already it's a usefull fixture to get more minutes into players & get an understanding of each other, but at the same time I wouldn't see the point risking the likes of Tommy Rowe & big Tom.
You wouldn't imagine it would be the sort of game to be picking up injuries though, not impact ones anyway.
If I'm home tomorrow I'll probably attend.
-
I understand why people think it's a good time to make changes but if Man City U23s are beatable i can't understand why we wouldn't go out with the best team we have and win the game. Momentum is huge and we've just scraped a win nows the time to push for another victory even if it's in a competition we don't care about.
Back to back wins will improve our performance on Saturday more than a rest.
-
We could use this competition the way that Prem clubs use the FA & League Cups. Don't take it seriously in the early rounds. Use it to benefit us in the way we require and then if we get to the latter stages somehow by doing this - then maybe take it seriously when we are a game or so away from Wembley.
-
According to RW in the DFP, it'll be almost a different starting 11 to the team that played on Saturday.

we must have at least 4 players in the starting 11 who started against Morecambe but like I said previously I can see there being at least 5 changes.
Reckon the team will be something like this:
Louis Jones
Charlie Seaman
Ro-Shaun Williams
Joseph Olowu
Branden Horton
Dan Gardner
John Bostock
Ben Close
Rodrigo Vilca
Tiago Cukur
Jordi Hiwula

Slightly off topic but how much is Car Park tonight pls
Which Park - how much - pay on entry ?
cheers
-
I'd play Williams and Bogle...
-
I’d be tempted to make changes to get minutes into the rest of the squad, but also pick a strong bench with the rested first teamers - maybe some would get game time later on.?
-
I'd play Williams and Bogle...
So would I.

Man City have got 29 players out on loan and will still be able to put out a more than competitive u21 team tonight. People moan about getting loan players in but you’ve got little choice really now, as all the talent in the country is hoovered up by a few clubs. It’s not healthy for the game and when you think that we beat their first team in 2005, shows how the goalposts have moved in a relatively short length of time. Every new deal and new rule change, like the EPPA, is stacked in the favour of the big clubs and makes the gulf even bigger.
Anyway that’s my rant, back to the game, I reckon 1-1 if Anderson plays, 1-3 if not.

Apologies if already mentioned elsewhere but I just noticed it's 16 years to the day since the Man City match at BV:

I thought someone on here said that there had to be at least 4 players in the side that had started in the previous game.
There's only 3 players tonight that started on Saturday.
-
Isn’t it 4 from the match day squad?
-
Think it's 4 from the players who have played the most league matches or something daft
-
Half time 1-1. Decent game and definitely winnable. Rovers have had the better chances and should have scored a couple more. Hiwula looks lively. Man City have some decent players - Sam Ekolie scored and reminds me of a young Dele Ali
City like to keep passing in back to the keeper so we are pressing ok
I’d like to think we can win this
-
To say there’s been so many changes, that’s still a decent side and a good bench too..
-
After the first ten, where they had virtually all the possession, mainly passing along the back line, we've controlled it in the main.
Great response to going behind, we've been quite direct at times (targeting their small left back vs Dodoo on the right a lot), but mixing it up too.
Looking to shoot on sight too, Hiwula particularly, it's a good game.
-
ggooaallll
-
Dodoo scores again
-
4 goals now in 3 games, what did richie say, just be patient, and let the players gel..
-
Dodoo subbed for Vilca
-
Dodoo subbed for Vilca
That'll teach him....... scoring bloody goals and cheering people up.
-
Done his job, more minutes in his legs and a couple of goals to boot..
-
Galbraith is on for Hiwula
-
2 goals in a game, steady on lads I'm getting a nosebleed here.
-
Bostock off rowe on
-
Cukur needs to go off, his legs have totally gone, 80 mins of good running and he has nothing left.
Good game, and we have played well but should be double figure goals for us here, they have made us do the hard running - the last 10 will be hard.
-
Close game this. City have hit the bar and now the post this half. They are going for it
-
How's young Louis doing? I'd love to see him get some confidence back after his misfortunes against Rotherham.
-
Full time 2-1
-
Great confidence boosting result...
-
Full time 2-1
Have it! :woohoo:
-
Great result, and we’re still in this competition..
Onwards and upwards..
-
I know the city team were young lads but they were pretty impressive and we did well to beat them. Hopefully things are starting to improve for us and fingers crossed for Plymouth on Saturday! Come onnnnnnn!! :clapping:
-
Good value for a tenner. Everyone put a decent shift in. Louis jones did ok, a few routine saves but wasn’t overly troubled. Dodoo won MOM but Hiwula stood out for me. Good confidence booster.
Lots of Man City talk on Twitter about Liam Delap but he was taken off after 60 minutes - Williams and Oluwu had him well contained
-
2 wins in 2 hope on Saturday we can make it 3 in 3
-
What a talented group they were, excellent battling performance from us & we looked good going forward. Well done Rovers.
-
This sounds like a very good result and performance.
-
A few of those City lads look potentially excellent players - as you would expect. Their movement as a whole is a joy to watch. The lad on the left wing looked very useful.
-
We actually have a chance of progressing now! Nice to see a striker score - think that’s the first time this season?!
-
Really enjoyed that, the ref threatened to ruin it just after half time but excellent performance
-
To win and come from behind hopefully is a boost to confidence. Go to Plymouth and even get a draw and we’ve had a decent week results wise
-
Agree with lots said above, great game, both sides out to win it, City certainly came out on the front foot in the second half after playing deep in the first. We got our goal, could have had more but then we were hanging on for the last fifteen when they went up another gear, great fight to hold on.
Lots of positives, particularly Dodoo & Hiwula, Jo certainly looked happier playing on the right.
Barlow was a threat all night, Gardner steady enough, the centre backs did well.
Only frustration for me is that Bostock still doesn't look fit....
-
Well, well. Great to hear such positivity & excitement from supporters who attended the game & clearly enjoyed what they saw against a talented opponent.
Long may it continue.
-
How’d we line up tonight? A lot of attacking players on the pitch assume must have been a 442 with bostock and gardener in the centre
-
Edozie, Bobb and Hamilton were their best players. I would hope that we put a word in to look at loans for them when City start looking to put them into mens football.
-
Really enjoyed that, the ref threatened to ruin it just after half time but excellent performance
in wot way, thought he had a good game and let the play continue when could, really enjoyed the game and know a lot don’t like under 21 teams in the competition but city were decent team
-
They were very tricky opponents, technically superb and full of energy. We came out of it looking pretty good. We had 20 shots with 6 on target and played some nice football and dug in at the end to win it. Barlow look good, Cukur although he faded showed plenty of promise, Dodoo got his first goals and I thought Owulu looked very comfortable. Overall a very rewarding nights work from the lads. Onto Saturday!!
-
How’d we line up tonight? A lot of attacking players on the pitch assume must have been a 442 with bostock and gardener in the centre
Bostock played his usual deep role, Gardner & Barlow higher, Barlow taking up the number ten role often.
With the ball we had a front three with Hiwula & Dodoo flanking Cukur.
Cukur had his best game yet for us, some great hold up play & nearly found the top bin after cutting in onto his right foot early in the second half. He tired towards the end.
-
Thanks Bessie Red & Spud, sounds as if we’re slowly but surely starting to play as a ‘unit’. All good stuff. Tonight can only help spirits in the camp as we head for a toughie on Saturday.
Let’s enjoy the good & not ‘diss’ it (I’m down wid de kids) when we get a defeat.
Slow & sure this season.
-
I thought Bostock struggled. A couple of very good passes but players went past him with ease, same with Gardner. It's clear why neither are getting a start
. Cukur had his best game for us. Was strong and direct, just needed to get his shots off earlier. Oluwo looks great.
-
Really enjoyed that, the ref threatened to ruin it just after half time but excellent performance
in wot way, thought he had a good game and let the play continue when could, really enjoyed the game and know a lot don’t like under 21 teams in the competition but city were decent team
I agree overall he was decent but just after the break he went a little whistle happy for five minutes or so giving a raft of soft free kicks to City
-
Woukd have loved a couple of there players on loan fast skilful
-
City had some very good players out there tonight, i think the only thing that beat then was age and experience.
I don't think any of them were any better than Taylor Richards from last season(granted he is a bit older)but it just goes to show, He was very hit and miss for us, some games brilliant followed by others very ordinary and looked disinterested but i think the key is that these young talents are always going to blow hot and cold bar the odd exception,
Even though they looked very good tonight their star players would struggle over the course of a full season in men's football(same as Taylor Richards did)
-
I agree but playing with men rather than youngsters would help them, some
Of them were class
-
Sounds like some of ours are finding their feet,
Good to have a striker scoring goals, let’s hope the next couple of days in training get everyone on the same hymn sheet and give Wellens a selection headache…
Onwards n upwards
-
Very good game of football and by far our best performance of the season so far, hopefully the confidence can keep building and we get a good result away at plymouth on Saturday.
Dodoo scored 2 really good goals and was an outlet on the wing, Olowu was excellent at the back, blocked everything and was comfortable on the ball. Cukur and Barlow had their best games for us as well as Gardner who was very good in midfield. Horton and seaman had there work cut out with them overloading on the wings but coped very well and also got forward when possible. One worry from tonight and previous games was that Bostock tired after 10-15 mins of the second half and looked shattered for the last 20 mins, defo think he needs to be further forward with someone quicker next to him to help him out with the running and let him be more creative.
-
I wonder if COVID is could still be affecting Bostock’s fitness?
Everything else seems to be making progress. Saturday’s game will be very tough, and anything from it would be a huge bonus.
-

It won't have helped but he had the same issues last season. I know the City players were quick but the ease that they went past him was a worry. Especially when he is playing in a holding position.
-
I watched some of his YouTube videos from the time he signed for us, he seems to look after himself & take the fitness very seriously, his bleep tests were apparently impressive.
Could be covid or a niggling injury, whatever it is I don't think it's fair judging anyone on those kids going past em last night, they were something else with the ball.
-
He’s been playing since he was 15 so he may be prematurely tiring. Or he has played overseas in much slower pace for several years so is still getting up to speed. Or COVID.
-
He got a few knocks last night surprised we left him on as he was visibly struggling
-

Didn’t Wellens say that Bostock still isn’t over his covid issues.
-
Enjoyable game last night. Man City have some attacking talent in their younger ranks for sure. They could, and should have had 4 or 5 goals last night. As for our performance, i thought it was excellent and easily the best i've seen this season - although i am mindful of the opposition and the fact that Cukur didn't have two grizzled, well marshalled centre halves on his back all day, like in the league. Cukur is a weak link for me and although he did as well as he's ever done for us last night, again - be mindful of the opposition. I just can't see how Cukur is up to league 1 standard. He runs like he's just finished the London Marathon. He did well last night though credit where it's due.
Happy for Dodoo with a couple of excellent finishes that should do him the world of good and i thought his movement and mobility last night was much more noticable than in the games v Wigan / Morecambe.
Overall a really good performance throughout the side and although we should have been punished by them at the other end on a few occasions, we looked a lot more offensive than in our league games and had plenty of chances ourselves which should breed confidence.
The decision to plaster the backs of the City players shirts with white numbers and names against a pale blue shirt is almost as bizarre as our clubs decision to put black numbers and names on our shirts. Could barely make out the names of the City lads.
Home Park on Saturday will be a tougher challenge, but last night did us no harm at all.
Decent crowd too. About 1,800 wasn't it?
-
The best atmosphere in the crowd for a long time, you could feel the willingness for the team to do well, even when we went behind they stuck with the team and supported every bit of good play.
It was part of the match experience to me last night brilliant, and there were more there than I expected.

Great win for us, building confidence and getting players who haven’t started towards fitness.
Cukur especially nearly a full game, Dodoo a couple of goals, overall really positive for us.
