Things are now becoming serious for the club, the manager and for us the supporters and we enter two games against Cheltenham and Cambridge needing hopefully six points and in my eyes a minimum of four against two teams in better form than ourselves, and know we are weak as a physical team and poor as an attacking side in front of goal.
The last two games were against two teams who we historically never do anything against and have never done when we have had by far better teams than we have at present, seriously I dreaded those two games on the trot the day the fixtures came out.
Have we done ourselves any favours in those two games by the way we have played? not really we have shown we can play pretty football in areas that don't matter, we have a soft underbelly at the back and we can't make or take chances in the oppositions penalty area.
A complete reset at the top of the club is required, we have no u23s if you discount the first team that except for a couple of players is about that standard to the benefit of other clubs, while our own best juniors hit a brick wall at 18 yrs old.
Cheltenham meanwhile come to us fresh from a promotion with three players in their ranks that will be trying to show us what we are now missing, even I would be happy if any of our present team showed the enthusiasm of Alfie May at the moment.
Two big games, two games that can lift the spirits or having us having to accept our fate for this season that would end up a long slow death march to division 2.
How much do we want it, the supporters are crying out for some fight and effort above what has been shown up to press this season, The manager even at Doncaster Rovers is walking a tight rope, and the club are in danger of losing large amounts of money and standing in the game, and the excuse of financial reasons through covid is lame when the powers that be also constantly say we are in a far better place than lot's of other clubs, the table does not reflect it I am afraid.
Where do we go from here?
Can we get a couple of decent results to lighten the mood starting with this game against Cheltenham.
What selections would you make?
Can the management team turn it around?
Will they survive if they don't get something from these two games?
Are you happy with the clubs set up below the first team?
Lots to discuss, lots of problems to overcome, are we capable of an upturn in form? please have your say.

They have a fairly average away record in the league this season - it’s way better than our away record. Played 6 away games, won 1, drawn 2, lost 3. Their only away win was 2-1 vs Charlton. One potential bright spot is that they haven’t kept a clean sheet away from home yet. But, well, that’s not really a consideration for us I suspect.
-
We probably will lose and Alfie May could score….. they are no pushovers
Cheltenham to win 2-1
-
I hope and think we will win. But when you look at Blair & May and realize they were both very happy at DRFC and we let them go to improve the team it shows not only how poor our recruitment has been but also our retention. Both would be welcome additions to our current squad.
Prediction
Rovers 4
Cheltenham 1
Yep crazy....but I have a good feeling about Saturday.
-
Well we are going to have to change the line up with Knoyle out suspended. 3 centre half’s ??

Like your optimism. Probably wouldn’t like whatever you have been smoking though!

Its as simple as this we lose ,he should walk away

I was right there with you all the way through that until we hit the prediction….
We’ve only scored 6 goals in the 12 league games so far. The chances of 4 in a single game look doubtful. There’s always hope I suppose

the football is terrible ,their is no winners in this squad and they are his players , you can play tippy tappy football all day long in the middle of the park and across the back line , nobody can play the killer pass to unlock the defence or the forward line are not smart enough to make the runs, the squad has no back bone to it of fight , take away the fact wellens was a great player for is and he would be getting dogs of abuse from the fans
-
I recall all of these comments a few years back when we first appointed SOD
-
I don’t know much about this Cheltenham team, but a friend of mine in the game tells me they will be similar to Wycombe in that they will bully and get in our faces.
Of course they have three of our ex players, any one of which I would welcome back to the KM as they would add much to our team.
-
Very true, when we lost Alfie and Blair I saw it as a sign of progress (ditto Halliday)- whilst they were great characters who gave their all I wasn’t convinced they were good enough to get us promoted to the championship and stay there- the stark thing is that they are head and shoulders above what we now have

That’s a really good assessment. We hear about the budget being competitive etc which may or may not be true but the fact that no one was concerned about those players leaving and yet we would pretty much all love to see them back really shines a spotlight on how poor the squad is now. Either our budget is some way off it was or we’ve recruited terribly, or perhaps a combination of the two.

I disagree, Matty Blair was bang average for us in the last couple of seasons with us. Alfie May for all his enthusiasm and work rate had little or no end product.
Yes both good characters with a great attitude agree but they were not considered good enough for this level by most of us before they left.
Dahlberg, Knoyle, Anderson, John, Rowe, Bostock, Close, Galbraith, Hiwyla, Taylor and Okinibherie are all decent quality league 1 players imo.
The problem is first of all is we have not had had them all on the pitch at the same time yet. Also Bostock cannot play in that team as we have no proper ball winning midfielder in the team so he becomes a luxury player we cannot afford to play.
We have no goal scorer that has played 1 game yet for us this season.
When those problems are sorted, if they do get sorted, then those other players will look 3 times the players they look at the present time.
We are 3 players short of a top 8/9 team in this league.. I cannot understand why people think virtually our whole team is rubbish. It is nonsense imo.
-
If Alfie scores on Saturday, he'll probably get the biggest ovation of the afternoon. Although I don't think he'd celebrate it; I reckon he's got more class than to do that.
-
I want 3 points. I want to see us attack with purpose, create more than a couple of half chances and i want to see their keeper have a difficult afternoon. I want to see some signs of progress as every game this season has been exactly the same. Plenty of possession, nice passing triangles in the middle, not many chances created and defensive errors too.
Rovers are f**king boring atm and the law of averages says that we must see at least one exciting game over the course of a season.
Jesus. Non league sides can give high ranking league sides a real run for their money in cup ties so why can't we adopt that same approach.
Tempo and energy please. No excuses otherwise.

Alfie May has scored 4 league/cup goals this season so far which would make him the top scorer if he was playing for his previous club.
-
He’s definitely streets ahead of our guys in the scoring stakes but his 2 goals in 13 league games is a poor return for a striker. He might score on Saturday but the bigger worry is someone like Vassell who our shaky centre back pairing really struggle to manage.
-
2 words, must win. And we will.
-
Looking forward to seeing former Rovers lads back at The Keepmoat.
Indeed, I would like to think we’ll at least see Alfie back here next season unless he’s snapped up by a Championship Club meantime.
Only one winner Saturday, but thanks for the memories May, Blair & Williams. You all played your part in our history & we’re always happy to see ‘old boys’ return.
Best of luck for the rest of the season & in particular your own careers wherever they may take you.

Richie wants to be a good football club manager, if he leaves he would struggle with his present record to get a chance at a decent club again, so self interest suggests he will stay. and we are not a sacking club.
He will be given every chance to turn around our season, and rightly so as nobody can change anything player wise until January.
-
It would take the board six months, to get a replacement in if he did go. Decisive they are not ,but they have the clubs best interests at heart I’m sure.
Just like any other clubs supporters we hate losing games, i think only the queen hasn’t been blamed for our struggles and there’s still chance yet!
-
Sammy, even she has joined our injury list. Some of our young players in the first team are undergoing a learning curve in public, have never played a lot of football out of the regimented academy system where most teams try to play the same way pretty football which is nothing like the style that Wycombe and Gillingham play.
Its no surprise to me that when even some of the bigger sides such as Ipswich, Wendies, Sunderland, etc also find it an eye opener and have difficulty adapting to a more physical opponent.
They all feed off reputation and attracting the players coming out of the academy system from the premiership sides. and then they come up against a completely different style of play. For the players it is then sink or swim and many sink.
Even the pitches can be a complete change to what they are used to having been brought up on perfect 4g or manicured pitches and expect the ball to be at their feet hence not keeping their eye on the ball at all times and keeper ricks and miss kicks of simple passes, they have never really had to concentrate kicking the ball it is nearly always running smoothly on the surface they are used to.
-
I blame the Queen for our struggles.
-
This will be a win for rovers no doubt at all.

3 players short of top 8! I’d agree if we get 3 special L1 players like Marquis, Whiteman etc but realistically we’ve seen nothing to suggest we’ll be signing any gems with this recruitment team.
-
We need a keeper of our own, probably two centre backs, probably two central midfielders and without question two central strikers. No spine. As flaccid as a wet tissue.
-
I’m actually looking forward to tomorrow, hopeful rather than confident but have everything firmly crossed that we can kick start our season! :clapping: :rtid:

SO..,we let this pathetic season gravitate to it natural ending . Wellen has signed 14 players and he says that the job is only 25% done , so he WILL have get rid of some of these players if he’s to grow BUT their on 2 year deals . Makes no sense to keep him after December OR let him bring in more L2 quality players ready for the 22/23 season ???

It will give time to who ever in January to bring in some experience at the back and a better holding midfielder who help drive the play forward . No one expected what were all being dished up . Wellens has lost his authority ever since Bogle and Williams were publicly vilified and permanently dropped , then couldn’t off load them prohibiting any positive signings to be made . His catalogue of failures and pathetic excuses are clearly taking its toll on performances . His style of management hasn’t to date brought him success and the reasons are their to see that .. he’s out of his depth!!
-
Since 1969 he’s signed Knoyle, Williams Rowe Close Hiwula Dodoo on contracts 2 years or above then just for one year Barlow and Gardner who won’t be here next season. The rest are loans who won’t be here. Then Taylor on a three year contract. Anderson and Okenbirhie to extend contracts. So that’s 7 /9 players for next season. Plus any young lads he wants to keep although Ravenhill as 2years. So he said 25% to 30%.
-
When are you putting your business plan forward grumpy since 1969

-
It will also depend if funds to sign players of quality. Apart from some good loans what gems have we signed since Ferguson left.

You think we can advertise, interview and appoint a manager throughout January whilst offering only a minimal window of finances and expect the incumbent to identify, offer contracts and actually get the commanding defender and holding midfielder ?
If you look at the time lines and finances being made available, I’m sure you will agree that might be virtually impossible?
-
If Wellens was sacked next week and we got a new bloke in the week after he would only have the same players to work with, as well as the same injury list of course.
If the poor run continued he would just blame Wellens.
Would the owners then be confident enough to back the new bloke in the January window?
We are in a big mess and sadly I don’t see us staying up.
With all that in mind I think the said injury list and the lack of enough quality players to pick from means that we are unlikely to have enough to beat Cheltenham.
I would be happy to take a point today even though we certainly need three points.
-
I see this threads been hijacked too. Can't you just leave it alone and talk about the game?
One of those games for me that we should be looking to win by showing commitment, a will to work together as a team and put the bodies on the line. Whatever it takes to get a result.
I'm sure we can't help thinking returning players will have an influence in this game and bite us on the bum! If that happens this forum will be even less pleasant than normal.
At the end of the day, it's a game of football, win lose or draw. I have mates to meet, pints to drink, pies or burgers to eat, a nice seat, and 90 mins of the beautiful game to watch!
-
DBR, I have added to my post to include comments on todays game.
I hope that is good enough.
TBH there aren’t many threads on here that don’t go off on a tangent at some point.

I have a really good feeling about today, recently I've not expected to come away with anything, today seems different.
Hopefully it happens!
Let's get behind the boys

Really big this. Come on Doncaster.
-
Looking forward to this match, definitely winnable. We need to get behind them today and try and build the confidence
-
Seriously we need 2 wins in these 2 home games.
Let’s get right behind the lads today and be that 12th man.
Cheltenham are unlikely to bring more than 400.
So the onus is on our fans to create a decent atmosphere.
It does seriously help the players.
It is almost getting to make or break time. Let’s turn this season round starting today. :that:

It’s October and there’s plenty of time to draw a list of candidates who are out of work with years of experience and open to coming to a club like DonnY and who have prior knowledge of getting teams promotion. Wellens was appointed as a fall guy , as someone to blame when L2 football is achieved . I’ve no faith in the believe that everything is being done to avoid relegation , based on the way Wellens has been allowed to run the clubs player recruitment and the isolation of player assets ie Bogle and Williams when other pathetic signings of HIS should be added to that list .

Your posts are getting more and more far fetched as each one is written.
So RW was appointed to get us relegated because that is what our owners want. That basically is what your saying by the sounds of it.
What a complete load if codswallop.
Your not on the same planet as most of us 1969. Or are you just a WUM

FFS 1969 get an appointment booked your GP will be able to help with different medication and maybe counselling
-
Any other day we should beat these but confidence is bottom and that is everything
A draw 0 0
League 2 beckons unfortunately if I’m right
Still think Bogle should take part today. Big lad as daft as it is

Curkur is already twice the player Bogle is. He gives 100%
So you would rather play someone who gives 30% effort at the most? I am being generous with that %
-
Will be interesting to watch Cukurs movement today. Wellens alluded to he doesn't want him playing the channels.
-
He is looking alot better now he is fit but needs that confidence now to start putting away. Dodoo is playing out of position at the moment.
-
A draw and a performance where we scratch our heads that we havent won is a bare minimum today with their keeper being MOM. Anything else he has to go.
-
We are winning.!
-
Go on rovers!
Cheering you on!
Hopefully you can see it through.

Alfie May scores & holds his hands up in ‘apology’ CIM says.
Class.
-
The 3 ‘Amigo’s’ on now as Andy Williams joins Matty & Alfie.
-
I'd have Alfie and Matty back in a heartbeat.
-
We did offer Matty a contract, true as with most playing staff at the time it was for less money than he was currently on so for that reason or others he turned it down.
Matty had a lot of other personal issues to deal with while he was with us & maybe he thought new pastures would help with his ‘healing process’ but yes, I’d have him back ‘yesterday’ too.

Job done today. Would like us to build some belief after scoring 3 goals today and work on a few things when trying to close a game out. A bit naive at times but overall, a very encouraging performance with Galbraith being the standout player. Very good performance from Dodoo too. Bit by bit, we're starting to look like a team rather than a bunch of individuals.
We have some way to go to match the top teams but becoming a mid table team should be achievable. That's progress.
Bring on Cambridge.

I was out of my seat today on more occasions than in the whole of the season today.
Great excitement and good to watch.
Rovers were streets better than Cheltenham in the first half but credit should be given to our visitors for their last half hour performance.
Bostock was superb and I can’t remember him giving the ball away at all.
Massive praise to him as well for him walking round the pitch on the touch lines and behind the goal on his lap of honour.
He was smiling and waving and shouting to the fans.
Brilliant and that will endear him to the crowd.
I have asked elsewhere, but does anyone know when we last held a 3-0 lead before today..

Entertaining game, we took our chances but we weren’t brilliant. Cheltenham were unlucky to lose. They missed about 5 very good chances. We deserve a bit of luck. Hope Rowe’s injury isn’t too bad.

Brilliant for 80-85 mins then started to panic a bit. Wasn’t too much difference between today and most other games this season tbh apart from we took our chances.
Galbraith was a class above playing out of position as well as Olowu, Bostock controlled the game in midfield and Anderson and Williams dealt with everything that came their way.
Onto another massive game on Tuesday now, win that and we will be 1 point off safety with a game in hand and only 3 points off 15th.
Also, good to see Williams and Blair back at the keepmoat but Cheltenham were poor until Alfie May came on, said when he left that we shouldn’t have got rid and really do think he’s the type of player RW wants in them wide areas and he always gives 100%. Good luck to all 3.
