Probably virtue signalling. Anyone clapping that atrocity needs lobotomizing.

Politely asking what are you clapping?
Politely replying that perhaps some choose to show their support that way rather than ranting and booing at a clearly worse than second best and dejected set of players.
Which is their right - just like others who choose to show their support in other ways.

These players aren't volunteers. Costs me over 60 quid to go to a home game, takes about 7 hours of my day and i have an illness and whilst it is my choice, players putting in performances like that, not once or twice but most of the season give me a decision to make whether i want to bother or not and thus the club loses out.

So yes, it is up to each person to choose how they respond to a performance like that of course but for some, there is more reason to be f**ked off than just a shit team not trying and losing. Going to games isn't just a short walk or a hop on a bus for many, it is a long, tiring and expensive day and the players who are PAID need to recognise this. Lazy bas**rds.

I wish it was as ‘simple’ as having a group of lazy bas**rds to deal with, that can be ‘fixed’ one way or another.

It’s when you have a group who are lacking in ability that you realise you’re up the creek.

That, you can’t fix so easily.

I clapped a few times last night, not as often as I would have liked. Apologies didn’t realise it had upset some people

Me too. I clap bits of individual good play or when a player makes a great tackle / decision in isolation but booed at half time because overall they are a team and they fully deserved it. Ok so booing isn't necessarily going to make the players bristle with confidence second half i accept but they are paid footballers that need to ignore that and just do what they are paid for. Like anyone in any other line of work.

They can either think jeez, we were dire and the fans rightly booed and come out second half determined to prove a point or they can think jeez, those fans are morons. Booing us when we are trying our best or whatever and then hold a grudge and come out second half not wanting to perform out of spite.

I know which attitude i would prefer and which would be the correct one.

Sounds like Millwall at Blackpool a couple of weeks back. They were left in no doubt about our feelings either!

So are you advocating that everyone keeps their hands in their pockets and not offer any encouragement to the players?
I can understand fans frustrations when booing at either half time or at the end of the game but do you think this will encourage them more?
Not that there has been too much to get excited about but if we are making the effort to attend then surely we should also be making the effort to get behind the team.

I don’t mind saying that I’m a “west stand clapper” as you put it. The reason I do it? The players are clearly lacking in confidence, experience and in some cases ability. Individuals look scared to try things, don’t make the runs and don’t always look like they trust each other. There are very few leaders in the team at the moment or even men for that matter.

Knowing all this I realise and understand how fragile confidence is and that making individuals or groups feel unvalued rarely achieves positive results. That’s why I applaud and encourage rather than berate and humiliate.

The question should be why don’t you?

Hear hear Aidenstu! Absobloodylutely

The shite on here at the moment from knowitalls who possess voices but lack brains is mind bendingly tedious and repetitive. Still, it makes clear what those  with minds need to know.

Cheers, from Bogotá.

PS Bogotá, and Colombia, get better and better every single day I am here. I'm flying to Armenia, in the coffee district, next week to look at a couple of apartments. And drink coffee obviously.

I’m looking at travelling the the length of South America either later this year or next; it would be great to pick your brains about Columbia when your back and if you don’t mind.

Surely the rule is, only sing when you are winning; clapping and offering support, likewise. Simples. Keep up!

Of course I wouldn 't mind Stu! I'd be delighted to help. Nice people so far, a different lifestyle but one I am really enjoying a lot. You must either have a bi lingual friend or have enough Spanish to be able to get by at the beginning. Mine is improving quickly but there are accents which are proper tough. Venezolanos in particular.  Loads to think about before you set off but do that right and, if your world view is akin to mine, you will have a time you will never forget.

There are, of course, áreas to avoid. Particularly after dark. But be aware,  listen to advice and use your noddle. Which I know you do. I'm jealous already. I shall be coming back. Pronto.

Final thought. An EXTREMELY experienced traveller friend of mine devided to visit Argentina few years ago. He came back within 10 days. He's  never done that before or since. It's only hearsay, but I trust him. He decided it wasn't a place for gringos.

The other place to be very, very wary of is Venezuela. It's  gobsmackingly beautiful - but don't.  I do aim to get there, but then, I have friends from there. It's bloody dangerous even in the company of locals. Brother of one of my friends, a local, was stabbed 3 nights ago by a guy with no job and no hope. Best advice? Dont go there. You will stick out a mile and you will be targetted.

Ecuador is beautiful. Be wary of altitude. It's a real pig sometimes. Make absolutely sure you have multiple ways of obtaining cash. Big cities use credit cards but elsewhere? Don't rely on it.  And don't rely on Western Unión alone either. They can be good. But they pull the plug without warning and dont listen to anything you then say. RIA is another one. Works well, but again, don't trust your life to them alone

Don't use standard credit cards either. Mind bendingly expensive. Halifax and Nationwide currently offer cards for overseas use which are free for purchase transactions. Limited cash withdrawal also available but interest charged from day 1 as usual. Apply online now for both to give yourself time to satisy them you are worthy if an increased credit limit. I've  got 6k and 10k respectively. Amex is always recognised, but it's  a standard expensive credit card and their much advertised support is total and utter shite. Real garbage.

Encouragement is a lot better than booing your own players in my opinion, but that’s all it is an opinion, just the same as those who boo their team. I don’t think a lot of it is lacking effort. Some it is a deep depression of defeat that has invaded the place. Once you get used to losing it isn’t easy to change that.

The manager needs to decide his best eleven, then apart from the odd tactical change stick with it. An experienced manager would struggle with this situation, I hope somehow he can drag us out of it. Try and find a plan that works each game. Come on find a way for us. :scarf:

There is no UK consular support  for anywhere within 50 miles of the Colombian border. And the FCO advise against travel to Venezuela which means your insurance is invalid if you go there.

As a 'west stand happy clapper' I can confirm that we are clapping to encourage the team. Today's result shows what the team are capable of - they deserve, and can no doubt benefit from, encouragement.

I think that the happy clappers probably had a better interval between our last two games hoping for an unlikely win than the doom mongers who were expecting a thrashing.
We can't influence games so just take it as it comes. We will lose games where we are strong favourites and lose ones where we are rank outsiders. The latter ones make up for the former.

DRCraig, there are a lot of ex footballers old and not so old, ex pro's and lots who have played and watched the game all their lives who watch the game from the West Stand, and every game of football good and bad you can learn something from the game.
Have you ever thought that they have forgotten more about the game than you will ever know.

Just got off the phone from a friend that supports Sunderland and said they were woeful. Said we were up for the fight and deserved the win.
