Coronation 1952
25 years
Silver Jubiilee 1977
25 years
Golden jubilee 2002
Er... 20 years
Platinum jubilee? 2022
Never mind, make it up as we go along, better fit it in now, bring it forward a bit. And there's a new Tom Cruise film, we can tie it in with loosely.

RD. You missed out
Ruby. 40 years.
Diamond. 60 years.
Sapphire. 65 years.

Platinum is 70 years. What's the issue?
-
What is 75 years?
The Krypton jubilee?
-
A platinum jubilee is a celebration held to mark an anniversary. Among monarchies, it usually refers to a 70th anniversary. The most recent monarch to celebrate a platinum jubilee is Queen Elizabeth II of the United Kingdom and the other Commonwealth realms in February 2022.
-
Did we have a bronze jubilee?
-
Did we have a bronze jubilee?
I don't think so. Should we have?

I don't know, athletes celebrate bronze.

RD, are you just wanting an argument?
-
RD, are you just wanting an argument?
Not really.
It's just, the whole thing is absurd isn't it?
Still, it's an excuse for a long bank holiday.
-
Happy platinum jubilee BB.
Whatever that means.
-
It probably means nothing to you because you don't think you're getting any sort of financial benefit from it, like the true lefty you are.
-
I'm just trying to comprehend the mental gymnastics that response takes BB...
-
Just save your time and regard it as the truth RD......
-
So are you saying anti monarchists are lefties?
Like the American Republicans?
-
Why don't you f**k off and live in Russia?
Why?
Do they decimalise it?
--------------------------------
No but they "decimate" parts of the former U.S.S.R. if that's any help to you ... lets call it The former U.S.S.R CIVIL WAR
as for the 70 year UKREIGN of Queen Elizabeth II you can either celebrate it with us or stick your school boy "Platinum pen " that goes well with your school boy mentality "where the sun don't shine" and the ink don't dry
you are currently a "ink blot" on the site" and need to be erased.

Did I suggest I was against the British monarchy?
My only point was these precious metals anniversaries are a bit perculiar.

Wow! That kicked off didn’t it River Don lol?. I got where you were coming from, but the resident Right Wingers are obviously looking for a fight today.
Me? I find the whole concept of ‘Monarchy” to be anachronistic and corrupt, but unfortunately the brainwashed from birth brigade, don’t ever question what they’ve been indoctrinated with.
Bit like religion if you ask me, but that’s another argument waiting to be launched.
-
The right-whingers showing the great British values of tolerance and free speech again.
Happy PlatiJoobs everyone.

When it comes to Monarchy, these days I'm a don't know.
I can see that having a much less political head of state has its benefits. Soft power. It keeps the politicians in their place.
On the other hand, having a leading family does put them in a guilded cage. Yes they are fabulously wealthy but it must be a hell of a thing having your entire life mapped out for you and always expected to be on display. And it is a shining symbol of inequality.
When you look at the option of a president, I don't know I'm always sort of repulsed by that.
Perhaps I'd like the British royals to be more low-key, Scandinavian style but I don't think the world's press will allow it
-
Why don't you f**k off and live in Russia?
Hmmm
-
Why don't you f**k off and live in Russia?
Hmmm
Obviously the option of living in a violent, repressive fascist state is the only alternative to Monarchy.
-
RD, are you just wanting an argument?
The irony
-
What an absolutely fascinating thread!
Monarchy? Whether you love it or loathe it is upto the individual. Personally, I'm not a fan, but as RD points out in Post No. 22, it's not a simple question. But then, as our resident right wing, inflexible, dogmatist suggests, nobody but him is ever allowed any opinion that differs from his. Kinda typical really.

PS Why are the Red Arrows going over my house right his instant, low down, with their wheels down? Surely thay can't be landing at Fairford? It's full of U2's and assorted hardware.
PPS. They are! I just watched one coming in. P'raps they're going to demonstrate their skill accompanying a U2 to Russia or the Ukraine.....
-
Midlands Air Show - they are going to be based and flying out of Fairford for the next couple of days

It does not matter what you call them every country has a ruler, I would suggest that our monarchy are one of the better ones when compared with Russia, North Korea, China, Syria, and a host of African countries, and not forgetting Afghanistan.
-
Perhaps the Royal family gives the public a personality cult to follow but unlike China, North Korea, Russia or even Trumps America, it's benign?
-
But the Monarchy does not rule Britain Selby.

BBC News - Platinum Jubilee: Prince Andrew tests positive for Covid
https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-61676093
How very convenient lol. Probably picked it up in Pizza Express!
-
One last thing I would say about the royals is all the female members of my family, except the youngest, a teen are fascinated by it.
I don't know what's going on but it obviously taps into something deep. Soap Opera perhaps?
-
Andrew with Covid? Pull the other one. He was insisting on taking part in some parade, Knights of the Garter or something like that. He's been leaned on. This is the easiest excuse. My lad told me today that there's some song going around which talks about a certain Prince being a nonce and that it's in the Top 20 now. Can't imagine the BBC playing it but I'm told there's a big effort online to get it to Number 1! Anyone heard of the thing?

What argument waiting to be launched? You're either an atheist, an agnostic, or a believer, all of which is your privilege; and, as Einstein maintained, none can be proven as correct.
Sorry to disappoint you, but there's no debate to be had here on that.
-
First time Andrew has been in the news for something positive
-
I'm not convinced we should fund the monarchy to the extent we do, that needs to modernise.
But the ceremony, the celebration and the togetherness it brings as a focal point is superb and unique accross the world.
-
I agree with you Selby but they don’t actually rule the country
They do far more good than they are given credit for. That’s excluding the likes of Harry and Meghan of course
-
And charlie I guess, shagging around, ignoring his wife and trying to influence the government.
princess anne ...... hmmm
-
A governor general position works ok in Oz and Canada appears to manage.

Is this what you are referring to Steve?
''"Science without religion is lame, religion without science is blind." So said Albert Einstein, and his famous aphorism has been the source of endless debate between believers and non-believers wanting to claim the greatest scientist of the 20th century as their own''
''Due to be auctioned this week in London after being in a private collection for more than 50 years, the document leaves no doubt that the theoretical physicist was no supporter of religious beliefs, which he regarded as "childish superstitions"''

Never mind what the arsewipe Guardian says. Do your own research. Google "Was Einstein an atheist?"
You'll soon find out that he wasn't.
-
Morning Steve, or has it been an all-nighter celebration, please show where atheism is mentioned in my reply.
-
Normally with Covid you're asked to self isolate to protect the elderly, Prince Andrew not so much
