Does this open up the debate on what some "universities" are now offering to students at degree level. Is it right that the taxpayer should expect a return on their sponsoring of HE, if the graduates cannot attain a higher paying employment is it the states responsibility to pick up the tab as some degree courses will never allow recipients to pay back during their working life.
Is this "cultural vandalism" or economic necessity?
Will this fundamentally change the makeup and stature of the country with the reduction in arts and humanities departments?

This has been going on progressively for a long time - since Thatcher?
Is the problem more in there not being so many clear routes to success in the arts? Isn't that part of "art", the suffering and learning? Probably not so much for a civil engineer, or a doctor - though some could do with some serious suffering!
Broadening out the courses as in the article seems positive.
