Title: Great British Railway - New Home Of
Post by: scriptman on July 05, 2022, 05:09:47 pm
Please vote for Doncaster for the new home of the Great British Railway. Doncaster has been dumped upon since the 1980s, it needs this, it deserves a chance. Flying Scotsman and Mallard were built here. Please vote and pass this on to your friends.

We are in the short list of six, along with:

Birmingham
Crewe
Derby
Newcastle, and
York

Only one winner here, and it’s non of the above! Vote by 15 August.

Unsure why it is down to a vote, it should be on merit but how would that be decided, anyone? And if everyone in each option voted then the largest population area would win, what the hell!

They appear to have accepted my vote!!

I've voted but I don't understand the need for it. Surely the cities with the largest populations are likely to get the most votes?

The vote is only one consideration - they will also be judging on all the other criteria such as location, available facilities, levelling up potential etc. The vote is just a bit of social media fluff, although I've read that the vast majority of social media interaction has come from Doncaster, so maybe it will count for something.

You'd hope so, the work done by the council, mayor, local Mps from all parties has been very impressive actually.  It's exactly what we need to see from local politicians doing all they can to bring in investment.

Although the cities of Donny and Birmingham have the National Railway College in their midst.

I'm in York. The local press here seem to think they make the strongest case.

In terms of levelling up I'd imagine it would be between Donny and Newcastle.

I would think Yrk and Donny, my neighbour from York says there isn't much development land near the Station, whereas we got a big plot called Waterdale!

There's also the old plant buildings just across from the station.

Also, I'm not sure if the Colonnades is currently occupied.

That's not correct, York has a massive tranche of land off Leman Road that is available for redevelopment, this used to be the Old Wagon Works, Leemen Road ACE engineers workshops and Sidings.

Spent quite a few years there before it was all reduced to rubble.

I’ve just seen a Facebook post claiming this has been awarded to Derby. True? Such a shame if it is

Derby is on the only major intercity line in Western Europe that isn't electrified. It's a national scandal.

I meant that fact that the line isn't electrified is scandalous.

In fairness, Derby has as good a call as several other cities, based on heritage.

My dad always told me when i was brought up, that there was 3 railway towns, Doncaster, Crewe and Derby. (although Derby is a city)

Incidentally only stumbled across the railway museum last week at the old girls school at Waterdale.

For any rail enthusiasts who have not been its worth a visit.

Think you need to have another look at who the MPs are, are you talking Derby or Derbyshire?
Margaret Beckett is MP for Derby South and a Tory for Derby North

I remember Derby

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/InterCity_125

". A team of engineers was assembled at the Railway Technical Centre in Derby in the early 1960s, to design and develop an Advanced Passenger Train (APT) capable of at least 125 miles per hour (201 km/h) incorporating many features not previously seen on British railways—such as tilting to allow higher speeds on curves.[1]

The APT project suffered repeated delays and in 1970, the British Railways Board (BRB) decided it was not sufficiently developed to modernise the railways in the short term and at the instigation of Terry Miller, Chief Engineer (Traction & Rolling Stock), the BRB authorised the development of a high-speed diesel train using conventional technology for short-term use until the APT was able to take over. An operational prototype was to be built by 1972.[2]
