After the latest injury update players
unavailable for Huddersfield and Rotherham games Anderson, Knoyle, Close, Barlow, Taylor, Andrews. Are out and Clayton ? So out of the 21/22 contracted players we have 14 players and Clayton? That includes 2 goal keepers.
We have 5 defenders including Seaman and Faulkner plus a Trialist left back so that’s 6.
We have 4 centre midfield players including Clayton?
Forward players now we have 4 plus Trialists.
-
Big test for some of the players, just what they want.
-
So on Saturday if we don’t sign any more players then the eleven to start the best?? we can put out without Trialists and the 6/7 injured players is
Mitchell Seaman Younger Williams Olowu Biggins Ravenhill Molyneux Miller Griffiths Rowe
Subs Jones Faulkner Agard.
Now I appreciate we will play Trialists or U18s teams do, we certainly do as RW had to do last year and GMC as got to do this year.
-
It looks like the interest in this game and Rotherham game is not what was expected.
Looks I’ll have to change our three tickets for Saturdays Game.

Why don't they close the East Stand? It'll put more people off by having sun in their eyes.

I take it the south stand will be open, if so might go sit in there.

There will be some people turning up who won’t know that their West Stand ticket will not allow them into the stadium.
I doubt that the East Stand will be packed out so why not just allow people to go into the stadium with unallocated seating.
-
It's simple, I wouldn't have bought a ticket for the East stand. Literally received my West stand ticket this morning.
-
Can’t understand why they use the East Stand and not the West as said previously the sun will be in everyone’s eyes
-
Lovely, collect your tickets before the game, wonder what the queue is going to be like don't forget the sun tan lotion dark glasses and a hat just as the hot weather is coming back
-
The problem is the cost of living will hit alot of people hard,If you go to both home games with travel costs plus a pint it will be the best part of £25 per match ,can see numbers down on fans traveling as well this season
-
The prices at our stadium are reasonable for tickets but the club has to realise the area on the whole isn’t affluent. They will need a few creative ideas doubling tickets up etc. value for money needs to be given with portion sizes on food, I know this is sub contracted but Yorkshire folk expect value for money.
-
Is it possible to change to the Black Bank and slum it ?
-
It’s about interest Friendlies why bother. Season ticket holders I’ve already paid why pay for friendlies. People just turn up on the day instead of going to ticket office before. Cost of living going up why spend my £5 plus getting there petrol wise. What has the club done to improve the side yes 4 decent signings one being a loan. No improvement in the defence at all from last season. Signings dried up anc we are looking at 20 year olds as GMC says we can’t afford the older ones wages. Still got abundance of injuries some continuing from last season. So the average supporter who got turned off last season will take some turning back on again. Now this won’t go down well with people on this board because alot will accept anything as long as we got a club.
This time last year when RW had signed players but couldn’t get anymore quality ones he spent the budget. Therefore what about GMC and Copps and yes you will say we have plenty of time wrong two weeks is our first game and we may not have enough fit players to put 18 players out. The common denominator is DBlunt and the self sufficient budget it’s not working. But people will cheer when we sign a 20 year full back from Rangers reserves or left side attacking player again 20 from Birmingham City.
Then questions are asked why people won’t support friendlies, by the way I’ve got my ticket.
-
:silly: why bother indeed.
For me it’s about seeing new players and how they fit into the team. You may dis the incomings but from what I’ve seen and read they are all good/ very good additions that add to what we had to compete last year.
It’s also about the match day ritual coming back, an excitement that I and my son have missed- even as bad as we were last year/ 2 years.

I’ve not dised the signings. There’s not enough. The reasons I’m going tomorrow is the same as you. Am I getting more confident the way this preaseason is going I would say No. Same as I wasn’t confident with last preseason. So I can see reasons why people will not come
-
Quite right jmt
Not exactly excited by signing a 20 year old but signing a decent left back regardless of his age is surely a step forward
-
Not sure if I'm going yet, but if I do my main objective would be assessing and familiarising myself with the new players.
For me though, preseason friendlies have become less attractive as teams put out teams who are less and less likely to be anything like their first starting XI, and with the number of subs used, the competitiveness (as far as friendlies go) of the match makes it more of a 'going through the motions' affair in order to give players minutes.
As we've seen in the past, playing higher ranked XIs means bugger all, as often we get a mix of first teamers and youth players.
Some clubs have had the luxury of virtually changing their entire team at half time.
If I go, I don't expect to get that much out of it, and the result is meaningless. If we win, then folk will say, it's just a friendly and they didn't put their strongest team out. If we get beat, folk will say 'We're doomed!
Maybe very cynical of me, but you get the drift. I really do hope the game is competitive and we see evidence of the new talent emerging.
-
Not going to sit in the east stand with the sun blazing in my eyes the club said that the last time it happened that they would look into it looks like they haven't
-
I'd have probably gone plus 2or three but not in the east stand this time of year particularly.
-
Could SM or Derek from the Shadow Board ask why the East Stand is used considering the visibility problems
-
It could be because of the corporate boxes being on that side plus the opportunity for the club to get people into the Legends Lounge , obviously spending money in there.

Club have said you can have a refund if you don't want to relocate seats. Just give the ticket office a call.

Yep, I agree but which do you think the club would favour.
-
I won’t be bothering, mainly because of the amount of trialists that get played, not likely to see a strong team played for most of the game.
I just don’t find friendlies interesting, it’s hard to get exited for them, if it was to see an outstanding player from the opposition, or a good new ground, that may twist my arm, but this pre season just doesn’t get me exited, we have recruited ok, but again not anyone I won’t mind waiting until the season opener to see.
-
With reference to the question as to why the East stand is being used…..
My understanding is the club have gone for the most “like for like”stand.
The club I feel certain, will happily accommodate the ones that don’t wish to move from the West stand.
I always sit in the West stand & I fully understand peoples frustrations, however I can see why, on this occasion the East stand has been chosen as the most comparable alternative.
-
Club have said you can have a refund if you don't want to relocate seats. Just give the ticket office a call.
I think the main issue here is that people want to WATCH the game, not squint at it.

100% agree. That's why I'll be returning my tickets. Potentially 35 degrees on Tuesday, not ideal being out in that with limited access to shade.
-
Exactly DO we were all set to get tickets in the East Stand when the ground opened, fortunately the sun was out the day we went so we ended up in the West Stand
-
Not so bothered about the sun in eyes it's not a huge issue. But the heat in direct sun is a pain. I'm assuming behind the goal isnopen?

Only at Doncaster Rovers would the safety officer ignore government warnings of extreme heat, and place every fan attending the game in direct sunlight contrary to government instructions and advice.
The safety officer wants to hope nobody is affected by a heat stroke or even worse, he could be walking on egg shells.

Selby may not be a troll on the whole but judging by his post in the off topic section on the heat, this is very much an attempt to troll.

Troll or not call me what you want it's like water off a ducks back, but pet owners are being advised to keep their dogs out of the sunlight and heat today.
It will cost the club money, I know at least three people that are not going to attend today because they will be obliged to sit in an area they know they will be uncomfortable in.
Not only that, people like myself paid extra money when the stadium opened to pick their seat in the stadium knowing the problem with sunlight and wanting to be in a certain area. The club were quite happy to have this extra income stream at the time for the right to pick and choose, many still season ticket holders in the West Stand in the same seats.
It's called loyalty to the club, the club should respect that loyalty, or has the club conveniently forgot the commercial aspect they had at the time and hope that others have as well with the passage of time.
I haven't.

Free Tap water available at the food kiosks, mind you they would probably turn the wrong tap on and give you hot

I have never heard such moaning and goaning about people not able to sit in their usual seats in West Stand, they are trying to keep everyone in the South end of the West but you would think they are being asked to sit on the Moon. But I sit up there, my seat is up near the North stand I've paid to sit in my usual seat.
For goodness sake the Club have made a sensible decision to allow people to sit out of the sun deal with it!

Raven it’s more to do with communication - box office telling people they can go in their normal seat then a steward saying they cant
-
No Olowu new Trialist RB
Trialist LB Maxwell
Trialist forward Maxwell
-
That's fine but for goodness sake, it's the end of the world to some of them standing arguing with the stewards

Countering, a good Yorkshire word.

Doesn't say much about Seaman's chances if we'd rather give a trialist RB a game than get him minutes before the season.
-
Clayton got the armband and Rowe is playing
-
No live stream from DFP. Disappointing.
Any updates anyone?
-
So, if you want to see how a triallist performs, put them on the bench??
Or maybe just doing it to encourage more moaning.
Judging by this thread, there's a few who can't wait to have a good old moan.
Can't wait for the usual club bathers to turn their attention to actual football!! Ha ha.

Kick-off still delayed
We're still waiting, the delay we're told is that the paramedic team on duty this afternoon aren't with us yet, as soon as they arrive we'll be kicking off.
-
Not too bad so far. Our back row looks decent with triallists 12 2 and 23 looking good. They’re fitter than us and a bit more savvy but we’re holding our own.

DFP saying Tomlin is showing some class touches.
He’s had about 4 touches. You can see some class there, but we need to get him involved. Or maybe he needs to get himself involved. It’s a tricky one. Can we build our team around him? As that’s what we’d probably have to do to compensate for his lack of movement.

Is he a No 10 type player or wide player?
I wonder 8f he's suited to the role JC26 carved out for himself.

37' Another quick break from Rovers, as Molyneux gallops free and finds Miller in the box, but the forward's shot is blocked.
0-0 | #DONHUD | #DRFC

42' The ball is worked into the box where Trialist C drags his shot wide.
0-0 | #DONHUD | #DRFC

Is Maxwell #3? Yes doing very well I’d take him on that half’s performance.
Tomlin is a bit of a unit and looks decent but yes would like to see a bit more.
-
Maxwell was number 3 vs Spennymoor and played very well, good to hear he is doing it against better opposition.
-
Maxwell at 20 year old has the looking of a good left back he is better than we had last season. So unless they have some else they know is better we should sign him. Now for the negative bit can we afford his wages.

Playing in the 10. Can’t help but think he affects the shape of the team a bit. If we want to be a pressing team (and Miller and Molyneux have pressed quite well) then can we carry Tomlin? I wouldn’t rule it out by the way, I’m just not sure.

Well that's something we were distinctly lacking last season. Someone with vision who can put their foot on the ball in the final third. Buy a bit of time looking after the ball and being creative.
Sounds like we have good willing runners to link up with.
-
Reading the FreePress reports we have looked relatively good against very good opposition. I expect them to put some pressure on now in the 2nd.
Tomlin sounds like he is running our team, and keeping the game going.
I will be honest I was expecting a brutal pounding today by them- but we have had just as many if not better chances?
-
If Maxwell looks decent and we get the new centre back lad in, that is going to be good business for our defence.
Don’t know about Tomlin but it’s Dad’s Army with him, Rowe and Clayton all in the midfield.

Biggins is an unknown quantity for us and there is only one of him. Close we can’t rely on in terms of getting through 30+ games a season and Ravenhill is probably still not going to be ready this season to start regularly.
-
Interested to see who the right back is he is doing ok agains a championship tricky winger

Lad from Livingstone I understand

Really? DFP say Miller won pen.
More great pressing from George Miller, who has led from the front all afternoon with his running.
He places a young defender under pressure who brings him down inside the area. Definite penalty and Lee Tomlin tucks it away.

FT 1-0 Rovers
Best performance yet against top opposition. Rovers were organised throughout and stood firm against Huddersfield’s pressure to limit them to few clear-cut chances.
Good work from Miller to force a foul for the penalty and the first 90-minute run-out of pre-season for six players (including Trialist A).
This feels like progress. Reaction to come.
-
Anybody getting excited now?
It is just a friendly, but from reading from several sources, we had shape, control, energy and skill.
This will be a bumpy ride, but I think we may be OK. :rtid:

"90' - Final whistle, Doncaster Rovers 1 Huddersfield Town 0
So that was that, Town on top but losing by a single goal shortly after a raft of substitutions. Thanks for joining us, we'll have a review and other things for you soon, a good run out for Town's match day squad but they couldn't get the goal they clearly deserved. "

It sounds like some of the potential new signings, along with the new players already signed, might be better than our injured players.
Don't forget how badly those injured players performed last season.

Had to laugh at the very bias examiner reports, we got zero credit or mentions of our chances. It was as if we were lucky to be on the pitch with them
Somewhere between the DFP and the Examiner is going to be the truth, and that would state we had a very good examination of our defending and countering against a team that is 2 levels above, but the moment they dropped the first teamers in the second half, we started to create more regular chances, and took one.

Thoughts for the benefit of those that weren’t there:
It’s a good result, but no getting carried away it was very much a friendly and they’re always quite sedate. A good work out but we can’t read too much into it in my opinion.
The trialist right back who I think is the one from Brighton looked decent. Worth looking at.
Likewise Maxwell who was the trialist left back. Positioning was decent, blocked some crosses and dealt with balls into / across the box well. Looked confident on the ball. One or two stray passes second half shouldn’t take away from an encouraging display. But again we have to remember it was just a friendly.
Ollie Younger and RoShaun Williams both did well.
Biggins was busy and is bigger than I thought. He made some good runs beyond the forward line. He should be useful.
Molyneux looks like he could be a good signing. Positive on the ball and wants to make things happen. He also pressed well.
Miller worked very hard. His pace and intensity adds something that was missing from our forward line and I think he’ll be popular.
Tomlin clearly has something. The description of him as a luxury player feels right - he looks exactly that but the evident technical ability makes him worth considering. Feels like it would be a risk signing, but I can see the case in favour of it.
The trialist that came on to play down the left (Kyle Hurst I think) looked quick and lively. Very much out to impress and his pace and running gave us an additional dimension. Again it’s hard to pass too much judgement in a friendly.
Instinctively I do feel we still miss a Josh Martin type that can beat a player and make things happen.
All in all it feels like there were plenty of positives to take, but we have to guard against drawing too many conclusions based on that. There’ll be tougher challenges once the season gets underway.
-
We held our own against a team that was almost in the prem
-
Agree with Jonathan disciplined performance more pluses than negatives it can be built on without getting carried away. Now sign the players we must. Where is Olowu will we sign a right back left back centre half and a wide left player and Tomlin I don’t believe we will but we still need players
-
That was promising, I have to say. We hardly had the ball first half and they bossed the midfield for large parts, but we stayed disciplined and went in 0-0 at ht.
Miller was a constant menace and he did really well to win the penalty. There’s nobody to compete with him and that shirt is his. He’s very similar to JM, without his physicality. That’s as good a compliment I can give him.
Molyneux was ok, but needs a bit more fitness. The big surprise, for me, was Biggins, who I thought had a great game in midfield.
Note of caution: If it wasn’t for the triallists, we wouldn’t have been able to field a side. Work to do on signings.
-
Not only held our own but were fairly comfortable. Defence as a unit played well, midfield was competitive without creating a deal although we had 2 or 3 really good passages of play, up front as said Miller worked hard but was isolated. A very good piece of linkup from Molyneux and Miller 1st half created a good opening but shot was blocked ,I think,. Tomlin was class but struggled to get into the game 1st half but was more involved 2nd. The lad who came on on the left looked exciting. Overall a good workout
-
I said last year after the preseason game against Newcastle, that if we play like that we’ll be okay. Unfortunately we didnt. So best not say owt this time around
COYR
-
That's fine but for goodness sake, it's the end of the world to some of them standing arguing with the stewards
Let's face it, if the club told you that you had to sit on a bag of manure you would be ok with it.
And where do you get that impression from?
Come on lets hear it back your insult up fella with some detail
-
Not getting overly excited but that was an excellent team performance
Really hope that they had a pen ready for Maxwell, tbh I’d give Tomlin a contract too, he’s stuck around and is putting the hard yards in.
If you looked to the area behind the manager there is still quality to come back into the team/squad once fit
-
Hopefully the good performance makes a few decisions on the trialists as Alan says we won’t uodjt have had much of a side without them.
Imo the left back and Tomlin should be offered terms for a start
-
All good to hear and thanks for the summaries.
The permanent signings so far all seem to have been an improvement and sounds like there's bags of potential.
A few loose ends to tie up but surely these lads are enjoying the opportunity and can see the potential in DRFC too.
Let's hope for more good news next week.
-
Good solid display by our lads today against quality opposition 2 levels above us.
I am not getting carried away also, as you can’t read too much into results in pre season friendly games no matter who the opposition are.
Now I don’t want people to think I simply don’t like Williams and have some sort of agenda with regards to him. But I have to mention once again his glaring weakness as a centre back. He missed making contact with 3 straightforward headers which he should have dealt with.
He gets under the ball from crosses and corners continually match after match.
I have not seen many worse centre backs at Rovers with regard to his arial ability on crosses & corners.
This is a problem that needs sorting or we are going to get punished. It won’t hurt as as much in League 2 as it did in league 1 fortunately as the quality of strikers in this league will not be as good.
Having said that I thought he was excellent on the deck making important blocks and clearances.
We desperately need a fully fit Anderson or an equivalent experienced centre back if we are going to have a frugal defence this season.
I just think that Williams, Younger and Olowu which ever 2 or if all 3 play together lack the experience required.
I hope I am wrong but suspect I might be right.
What does GM think though. Is he waiting for Anderson to get 100% fit and how long will that be or is he on the look out for an experienced centre back?
That’s the million dollar question imo.
The rest of the team is taking shape nicely. Still work in progress but after 2 more pre season games most of them should be up to speed.
If the whole squad was 100% fit there would not be too many if any better ones in this league.
-
I was only saying today how much Williams has improved CR
-
100% is Williams doesn’t seem commanding enough in air, given you can expect a fair few teams to be playing long ball it would be a worry if he’s first choice for me.
Thought the trialists were some of the best players on the pitch today, did we get confirmation who they were?
-
Harsh on Williams there Camps, can't think of the 3 situations you mentioned. My thought was that Williams and Younger played pretty well today as a pair
-
I was only saying today how much Williams has improved CR
He has on the deck. But watch him from corners and crosses.
-
Ayo Tanimowo ex Brighton is the shout on the right back.
Hes playing for Livingstone today so not him!
That's Ayo Obileye, isn't it?
Thats the lad we'll just call him Steve looking at Livingstone lineup didn't see his name there so my source could be right
-
Tbf none of Williams, Olowu or Younger are good in the air. I don't think this new guy is that great (in the air) either, surprised were after him.

Ayo Tanimowo is the one on trial apparently.
Ayo Obileye is a completely different player who plays for Livingston.

How do we know that about the new lad?

Data.
Edit: I did mean aerially, not his complete game. Unless we're playing 3 at the back we just need one in on loan and he needs to be good in the air whilst Anderson's out.
-
I remember the high expectations after the Newcastle game last pre season....
-
Harsh on Williams there Camps, can't think of the 3 situations you mentioned. My thought was that Williams and Younger played pretty well today as a pair
Not harsh imo ravenrover. I was sat in the south Stand for 1st time ever today and watched him very closely.
He does not seem to be able to judge the flight or the speed of the ball when it comes in from wide areas particularly corners.
There were 3 balls in he 1st half he got under and missed making contact with the ball.
-
All our fit centre backs are of a similar level and type. I'm no fan of Williams and would prefer we play Olowu/Younger (fingers crossed we get someone else to replace Anderson).
A 3 at the back makes sense if we don't get a left back (with Rowe wing back) and it in theory would cover the weakness of our defenders. But we haven't played that at all in preseason and it needs work to get it right. So that probably won't happen. Hope this lad from Wigan or whoever we get is a big improvement on Williams
-
This kid from Wigan I think his development has slowed because of lack opportunities, we will give him that.

He has played 23 games for Wigan in the 1st team.

Hope we sign Maxwell for the left back position. 1st time I have seen him play as didn’t go to Spennymoor.
Was impressed, he looks like a proper full back.
-
Agree CR, I’m worried that we might end up showcasing him for someone else to nip in and sign him. Really hope we’ve offered him something and it’s acceptable, reading his back story he thrives on proving himself. Think there would need to be some agreement with Rangers as they offered him a contract. Need to get it sorted so that any glitches with international clearance can be overcome - kick off 2 weeks today
-
Really we need to be making decisions on the trialists now to be fair to them as well as to shape our own team.
Maxwell looks like he would be a competent addition at left back. Expect it would be a nominal fee to Rangers as compensation, and if we can’t agree it would go to tribunal.
I get the sense we’ll offer Tomlin a contract and I can see why. A risk but a very gifted footballer and he seems to be enjoying it here.
The right back and the left winger that played today both looked interesting. I don’t think that Degruchy (?) will stay, though.
-
There was quite a few pissed off Terriers supporters at Donny services about half 5 ish :)
-
Agree we need to sort it soon don’t want to go into the last pre season game with multiple trialists. With Adams signing if we got Tomlin and Maxwell I’d be pretty happy with our business.
The right back on trial would be a bonus too because I’m not convinced on Younger playing there and GM doesn’t seem to rate Seaman. Knoyle should be decent at this level but with our record on returning players from injury I wouldn’t be counting on him to play a full season
-
Jonathan from what I read it may just be agreeing a sell on clause, they’ve apparently promised not to put barriers up that would jeopardise him getting a club.
Agree though it’s morally right now to make a decision one way or another. The number 16 is a puzzle he seems to be contracted to Birmingham - can players going on a potential loan play for another club (get that it’s only a friendly just wondered where liability would lie if he got injured)
-

Yeah, clubs can trial a player with a view to loaning them.
-
Maxwell, Tomlin, the right back from today, all need signing on the right deal for the club.
Don’t need to dither, get round the table and get them done. The winger from Birmingham is another good player, he’s worth loaning maybe with a view to signing him in the future.
The centre back we’ve been after needs games. We can give him that, his club aren’t going to play him. He has potential.
-
Sign Josh Martin on top and win the league.
-
Seeing GM relaxed and smiling looks to me like a man who knows he's onto something good and maybe knows he's being able to sign who he wants.
We always tend to think there'll be a spanner in the works and we'll miss out but looking and listening to the players, it feels like there's positive vibes about the place. Long may this continue.
-
A new back up right back could be a sensible move as it would allow Seaman to provide back up higher up the pitch in the absence of Taylor.
Hopefully Maxwell is confirmed soon.
-
I thought Williams was the better of the 2 cb’s yesterday and I still maintain it’s an experienced lad we need back there, however, that doesn’t look like it’s going to happen. Both left back and right back did great and stopped crosses coming in, in fact I swear young Maxwell was itching for their 7 to take him on down the outside, so he could show him he was in charge. Tremendous for one only 20years old and a massive improvement on Horton!
Add Tomlin to the list, along with the lad from Birmingham, and that makes, potentially, 5 new lads to sign (if there’s any truth in the Wigan lad). Maybe a tall order for us?
Get them all and it gives us a fighting chance this next season.
-
As a CB we need someone brave who will attack the ball ,Younger does this but lacks a little height. The best fit for this is Bobby Faulkner but it may be a tad too soon for him. What we would all love is a pre Balcombe fully fit Anderson
-
Didn’t realise Maxwell was only 20 yrs old. He looks older and plays with a maturity beyond his years.
Just looked on Wiki and he played on loan at Queen of the South from Rangers in 20/21 and Ayr United in 21/22
So he has some considerable 1st team experience in the Scottish Championship.
It also says he has left Rangers so not under contract any more it would seem.
Assuming Wiki is correct.

Can't wait to see Faulkner play. I hope the manager doesn't take his age into consideration, if you're good enough you're old enough etc.
You can't coach the desire to be first to the ball. It's essential for a centre back. None of the others seem to have it. The goalkeeper doesn't have it. They all seem happy to leave it to someone else. Hence the mayhem when the crosses come in.
-
Not quite right, Campsall. Rangers will be due ‘training compensation’ if we sign him, but have already gone on record to say they’ll make it easy for him to get another club.
-

Agree Alan all would be good additions.
The right back that played yesterday ( don’t know his name ) was excellent on the deck but again is going to be very vulnerable to high crosses coming in to the far post.
Tomlin has huge ability. Not sure he is quite up to speed fitness wise yet ( match fit that is not injured )
But he can open up defences that there will be little doubt about in League 2 So as has been said maybe a bit of a risk but one I think that could be worth taking. Ability is permanent. If he has the desire and right attitude then a no brainier. But we do need the right characters and ability should never be the only factor.
I am still concerned with the current centre backs. We look as though are still going to be very vulnerable to corners in particular. We need someone who is dominant in the air that will attack the ball.
With a pre Balcolmbe Anderson we would be in a much healthier situation defensively.
Is a 21yr old Adam Long the answer? If it’s true we are after him.
Maxwell on what I saw yesterday is a no brainier for that left back position.

I agree if he is good enough he is old enough adage RR
The problem is there is relatively little experience in that defence. They are all very young. No natural leaders.
Faulkner alongside an experienced older centre back i would have little problem with. That would help his development massively.
But it’s a massive risk playing him with any of the others we currently have available imo. Will it set him back if we leak goals.
Centre back position is so vital. A strong Spine to the team is essential.

Good interview from McSheffrey who does sound re-energised again ahead of this season. Interesting comment about the pressing - I noticed that very early that Biggins had gone all out pressing their back line and left a gaping hole that they played straight through. Shows good tactical awareness that the management team spotted and nipped that in the bud straight away and we did look a lot more structured after. Biggins’ effort was more measured and I thought he had a really good game.

How would you rate Tomlin against Bostock?
Totally different player.
Bostock was much better out of possession than he was given credit for. That’s not Tomlin’s game, nor his position on the pitch.
Tomlin can certainly make things happen and is likely to be much more of a direct threat in the final third.
I suppose what he does replace is the ability to pick a pass that breaks the defensive line, but again from a different area of the pitch. Bostock sat very deep and dictated play. We need to get Tomlin on the ball in the final third.
-
Bostock was a progressive hook between the defence and creative players.
Tomlin is a creative hook between the midfield and forward line.
-
Sign Josh Martin on top and win the league.
Out of the 2, Martin or the lad who came on yesterday on the left I would prefer the latter Ithought he was more direct and forcefull with his running at the full back and not looking to always come inside as Martin does. Having said that if we could get either it would make that left side more interesting
-

I have to say that selby has been telling me about Faulkner for a couple of years now and has high hopes for him as a potential PL player.
He tells me that BF is a natural leader and is the proper CB that we have been crying out for.
I also haven’t seen him play but from what I have been told about the lad I would think we have a very good player on the books.
selby knows when he sees a good young player.

I have only seen him play I think 4/5 times now and he looks a hell of a prospect. He isn’t 18 until next month.
-
Watched him a few times with the youth team, he looked a man amongst boys, his step up to playing mens football he seems to have taken in his stride
-
Bostock was a progressive hook between the defence and creative players.
Tomlin is a creative hook between the midfield and forward line.
That’s the impression I was getting but without having seen Tomlin play, I wondered if (given that Gary Mc appears to want to play a pressing game) he offers that ‘player to seek out for a pass’ in order to be able to ‘dictate’ play. Much in the way that Tommy Rowe was (in a very poor side) or attempted to be last season.
-
On the subject of Tomlin, he gave a very warm applause to the fans as he was subbed, and I think the fact he took the penalty speaks volumes. I fully expect we will be offering him a deal, if indeed we haven’t already done so.
-
We would be stupid not to, depending on the terms being right though. A years contract in my opinion.
-
And the cynic in me says we’ll sign him on an 18 mth deal only to see him keel over in his first game with a season-ending injury!
-
I think we more than had our quota of bad luck with injuries, we are due good luck now.
-
A year would be sensible for TOMLIN and the lad from rangers maybe a year with an option of another year or a straight two year deal.
Think we will end up signing 3 trialists and possibly another couple of loanees before the season starts
-
On Faulkner he looks to have a lot of potential. It’s hard when signing players for a manager, he has to look after his job by signing the best he can, while not blocking the way of very good youth players.
If he isn’t going to start, there is no point Faulkner sitting on the bench watching, he needs regular games to see just how good he can be. Whatever they do, don’t let this lad go as he could be very good in the near future. I would loan him no lower than Conference North. He won’t learn much if he’s too low down.
