Two year deal for undisclosed fee.
-
Not sure what this says about Tom either short or long term. Odd we extended his deal on presumably top earner status for our side. Can’t imagine we have just come across Long given we are paying money for him.
-
Good news. Hopefully this is a sign of succession planning (not that we should be surprised after Miller and Molyneux etc)
That'll make a few rethink about how we operate and what they say about Blunt!
I keep saying it, football decisions by football people. Maybe a sign of Copps influence too but either way, it shows we are in a better place than a few would have us believe.
Welcome Adam. We look forward to seeing you in the hoops.

I was originally in the camp that said we needed to sign an experienced centre half, however I can see why we’ve done this. The decision was made to extend Anderson’s contract in the summer and he is our experienced centre half. Time will tell whether he can recover from injury and prove that decision right - we all hope he can.
Long is reflective of what seems to be an emerging strategy here - bringing in young players that already have some experience and can come here to develop further. That’s what we all want really, and what many of us have been calling out for for a long time after the over-reliance on loan signings. We’re building a core group that can hopefully develop with us and appreciate in value.
Long seemed to be quite highly thought of by the Wigan fans, and is obviously someone we must have had our eye on for some time to have paid a fee. Hopefully he slots in well and helps us progress in the coming season. It makes us stronger at centre back.

Very good tackler
Very good at blocking shots
Doesn't give away many fouls
Good passer of the ball
Poor in the air

Sounds like a poor man's Maldini
-
He's definitely of the sitting type of defender, not the aggressive type. Cat not dog.
-
I’d take an actual cat or dog over what was on offer in the defensive unit last season. This lad can only improve the horror show we saw in 21/22.

Which site do you get this from? Genuinely interested. “Very good at x / Poor in the air” are bold statements to make about someone that’s played around 20 senior games.
-
Great news. Hopefully a full back or two will follow now.
-
Centre half that we can develop he’s left footed which none of the others are so it will add balance to the defence. What does this say about Tom or even Joseph will one of them be going we wait and see what develops before the end of transfer window.
-
Well I don’t know much about him but obviously GM and Copps have done their homework on him.
Just the age of all these defenders that concerns me. We need a leader at the back.
Maybe this lad is a leader. Being 21 doesn’t mean he isn’t of course. But not many of that age take on the mantle of being a leader.
Yes it bodes well for the future. We now have a nucleus of young players in this squad who if develop over the next 12/24 months should have a re sale value.
Now hopefully we can get promoted very quickly from this league and become a force in League 1 with this group of young players at the core.
Create the right work ethic and team spirit within this group and the future will be looking very positive.
I am getting very positive vibes with what is going on at the club.
The board are obviously backing GM and Copps as much as is possible.
They obviously will keep a sensible reign on finances though as they should do.
It’s the prudence that has been in place since Covid that has put the club in a relatively healthy situation that is allowing this positive squad building of our own players.
Of all the new signings so far only 1 has been a loan.

Dodoo was highly thought of by Wigan fans, just saying :-))

I've got WyScout which costs but WhoScored has some decent figures on there for free, see below link. They need to play a minimum number of mins to draw a decent picture from his per 90s and he's probably borderline in the 20-21 season for me.

Gavin Baldwin shops at Marks and Spencers

Big boots to fill as Cam John's replacement. Hope he's up to it.
As he's Manx I'll be following him with added interest. Wonder if he's our first player from the island?
-
Love the pictures that the Rovers website have put up. Look at the second picture and he looks as though he is hiding the exam answers

Left footed and left handed!

With all this positivity I guess being a grinch since 69 won’t be appearing lol
Seriously well done Rovers looks a great signing and we’ve paid money lol
-
Good news. Can we please sign a left back now.

Not sure I agree it’s big boots to fill in that CJ was either injured or played at left back where he was useless.
Don’t think we got anywhere near as much from CJ as we hoped for.

Great question. I suspect, Dutch, BRR and/or TRB will know the answer.

Another we don't know a lot about, but he sounds like he is promising, good luck to the lad.

I thought it was Harrods
Well it looks as though they are better than Neto. :chair:

Was it just a 1 year extension that Anderson signed?

Unfortunately CJ probably had more time in a protective boot than football boots

What a difference a month makes!
So looking forward to watching players that are under contract to us turn out in the hoops. We have ‘captured’ what could turn out to be a real gems. They are young, but from what I’ve heard from those that have seen them play they’re no mugs.
AND they are desperate to progress as players.
‘Copps Cubs’ (with all due respect to GM) as opposed to Busby Babes!
Let’s get behind these ‘boys’, make them feel wanted, forgive the ‘slip ups’ & applaud the positives.
I’m approaching this as a breath of fresh air from the dirge we were served up last season.
Well done Gary McSheff & Copps.
AND, we haven’t done yet I’m sure.
-
I do not think Copps leads these signings but he did say in an interview that he had a right of veto if he felt a prospect did not fit the bill .If the Long deal is anything to go by then it was all GM’s work as he explains in the audio on DROS .
-
It would be ideal if it was Anderson in there with Long or Olowu partnering him. It doesn’t seem it’s going to be that way at the minute, so experience will need to be gained together as a young partnership. That is unless the manager sees it as Ro-Shaun plus one.
We need organisation back there. The full backs need to stop the crosses coming in. The midfield needs to protect them better. The strikers need to do there job in closing down. It’s a team thing, close down as a team as we have been trying to develop in pre season.
-
The left back certainly did a good job of stopping the crosses and no one has mentioned his back post goal line clearance 1st half

.
I did mention in the other thread that he dealt with balls into / across the box well. He looked like he’d been well schooled as a left back. I don’t like to get too carried away by pre-season trialists but he looks a good one. We need a left back and we’d have to go and get someone pretty impressive to make a better impression than Maxwell did.
-
He needs to be signed before others show interest, it would be a kick in the teeth, to lose him now.
-
We might already have done. Same with Tomlin. Looks like GMs vid about Long was done at the same time as the prematch interview on Friday? But they chose to release it today.
-
I particularly liked the way all the team warmed to him, particularly when he headed that goal bound effort off the line, in the first half.
I think the lad has made an impression. Now for the important bit - getting him over the line!
(That’s not to detract from any of the other triallists, Ayo, Tomlin and Hurst particularly). All good what we saw of them.
-
It wouldn’t surprise me if some are done already. Staggering them out to bring more publicity in and interest. It’s showing a bit of intelligence. With transfers the spouting off you do, the less chance you have that they will sign. Nice and quiet and methodical that’s the way to do transfer business.
-
The Hurst scenario shows the difference between last season and this - we were signing loanees based on video clips
