Title: Offside from goal kicks?
Post by: Filo on August 21, 2022, 10:05:26 am
A little fact I didn’t know until yesterday after seeing where the Salford forwards put themselves at goal kicks, seemingly 4 or 5 yards offside, apparently you can’t be offside from a goal kick

After looking it up, it appears so, like I said something I didn’t know

A lot don’t know about the Keeper counting as a player for the rules of offside too.

yeah it’s just the last 2 players of the defending team whether it’s keeper or 2 outfield players

You can't be offside from corner kicks, throw-ins or goal kicks.

A lot of officials don’t know the rules either!

A bug bear of mine is foul throws. I believe there are 40.9% foul throws not picked up by officials per match.
A little unknown stat I managed to glean. It’s surely unsustainable.

Filo, I too learnt that one yesterday.

Agreed, ridiculous amount of foul throws go unpunished, mind you, yesterday's ref couldn't even get the basics right, the free kick we had where their player encroached was awful refereeing, should have been a yellow card & a retake.

why do they go unpunished aslong as part of front foot is on the line it’s fine

Yes, agreed.  A strong ref could have told them to go back behind the line and if they didn’t he should book the lot of them.
I saw it done once, a long time ago.

The referee was a proper jobsworth, looked to me he was doing certain things like talking to a penalised defender for ages and marching throws and free kicks back way past the original position, just to look good to his assessor, plank.

Mind you the female linesman did not help matters on the west stand side, very slow to keep up with play and very very picky with her officiating, missing many stone wall decisions, needs to go back to Sunday morning level as that looked her standard.

Im not sure if they still have physical standards assessments to pass before progression but she looked a proper candidate for failure.

I don't think i have ever seen a female linesman have a good game officiating us, i think she was the third i can remember off the top of my head, the other one had to be relieved of duty due to feeling unwell in one match?? after previously having one of our player's sent off in her other game with us.

Black cats and women linesman, unlucky for us.

(and that's from someone who is all for equal opportunities, but then i like people to be competent to carry out their role)

A frustrating moment of officiating when we were awarded the free kick outside the box yesterday. The referee marched out the 10 yards and sprayed the line. The Salford players moved back behind it, then as soon as the ref turned his back they shuffled a few feet in front of it again. Tomlin was clearly asking the referee to look at it and he just kept ignoring it, to the point I was more concerned he might book Tomlin for pointing it out rather than make any effort to enforce the rules. Really frustrating.

Most of us were delighted by the England Women"s team winning the Euros but to put that in context the USA women's world cup winning side were beaten 5 - 2 by a team.of 14 year old Texas high school boys. From this one might conclude that capacity for women to officiate men's football is at a similar level comparetively speaking.

Colin why would you expect anything different.   I can imagine that corner kicks are the same.  If a pro footballer needs to place the ball outside the quarter to cross the ball they’re in the wrong job.

Officials are just inconsistent they change with the wind even during games.  How many times are some tackles punished with yellow or red cards and similar not punished or found inside the box not punished that would clearly be outside

We’re ok now though because it’s going back to being a man’s game

And then when he took it one of their players was about 5 yards away.

But, it led to the corner we actually scored from so a touch of karma.

Rubbish.  Playing and officiating are completely different.  Women officials have to know the laws the same as men, and come up through the levels the same. So in theory a woman officiating in the efl has the same qualification and experience as a man.

I recall when we had a lineswoman for the first time at the KM - she was as good as if not better than her male counterparts on that day.

I think it’s unfair to bring the sex of any person in to it, they are either competent or not, I thought the lino was a mix of good and bad - no different to any other we have had this season.

With regards to the womens game, it shouldn’t be compared to mens football, they do not play mens teams week in week out.

Sian Massey-Ellis is one of the best linos in this country.

Consistently good.

The bottom line is that we regularly have to endure shite officials.  Their gender is irrelevant
