Pity for Pele. A great player a great ambassador for the game in later years

As far as I recall him he was a true gent.

Rest in peace Edison Arantes do Nascimiento ... that may not be exactly right but he would forgive me I'm sure

Had the pleasure of seeing him play at Hillsborough when Santos were on a bit of a world tour. Seem to remember that Tommy Graig (I think) stuck to him like glue near the end of the game to get his shirt

The greatest, that 1970 World Cup side was the best ever attacking side with Pele central to everything they did, Jairzinio, Rivelinho were his sidekicks, and who can’t forget the lay off for Alberto to score a screamer. Pele’s stature in the Football world will never be equaled

Remember reading his autobiography when I was in junior school - the man was an absolute legend

Probably the moment when most football fans of our generation saw football come alive in glorious colour.

Yes, we were still on a high from 66 but quickly learned about the pain of defeat to Germany but that final took football to a new level. A contrast to the stark reality of gritty domestic football.

Without a doubt, I was 7 years old, and remember watching that World Cup and Pele, a true footballing legend

I have seen some pictures of this game on Facebook. The crowd was gigantic and if I remember it was an afternoon kick off mid week. Loads of kids bunked off school to go.

Afternoon KO because of the miners strike and 3 day week, floodlights were banned to conserve energy

Not really, just read about it, but I do remember the 3 day week, Carlos Alberto was in the Santos team as well

Would have been worth a fortune in today’s game. A lot of players are overrated, he definitely wasn’t. Sad day him passing away.

When you think he was doing back then what the likes of Messi Ronaldo Mbappe are doing now on the type of pitches back in the 60s and 70s with players intent on kicking lumps out of you and they talk about modern players being GOAT............

I went to that game too Phil.
I was on a day release scheme from work, going to Shirecliffe College and by coincidence the game was on on the day we were in Sheffield.
Obviously we weren’t going to miss seeing Pele playing so bunked off.
