Title: Exactly half way through the season
Post by: Chris Black come back on January 01, 2023, 09:54:04 am
23 games and 34 points.

Our last two promotion seasons from the fourth tier were 2016/17 and 2003/04.

At half way point in 2016/17 we had 46 points and in 2003/04 we had 49 points.

We probably need 40 points in the second half of the season to scrape into the playoffs. That's the best we can hope for from here. With a bit of improvement starting today we can do that. A new player or two this month would help.

In 2003/04 we won the league. In 2016/17 we should have won the league.
This season that’s not going to happen. Top 3 now is almost impossible.
We do though have a realistic chance of finishing any where between 4th and 7th. The play off places are very much up for grabs.

Todays a big game, it’s one we really could do with winning. Next week we will have our work cut out to get anything at Brisbane Road.
We have to start to find some consistency. We have to tighten up at the back because if we keep conceding  3 goals we won’t win many that is for certain.

I agree with that - minimum of 40 points from here on.
That equates to 11 Wins, 7 Draws and 5 Defeats, which is a tall order.
We got off to a flying start at the beginning of the season, albeit with some very late goals and we can’t rely on that again in the second half of the season.
We need to be positive from the kick off in each match like the other night and see where that takes us.

It could happen, but there is no evidence this season under either McSheffrey or now Schofield that this group of players could deliver this. Given we are unlikely to be making wholesale changes this window, we’ve got the same group of players who have proved so inconsistent and underwhelming for the first 23 games of the season, for the rest of the season.

New manager trying to implement his own ideas, with a chance to sign his own players.
We’ve a great chance of the playoffs and a decent chance of the top 3

If Northampton have a wobble then 3rd place could be up for grabs.
They are at home to Orient tomorrow.

We are highest in the table out of all 4 relegated teams.

We have been almost for the entire season. Only recently Wimbledon went above us. Now we have gone back above them.

Without tempting fate by getting too far ahead of myself, I reckon that the Mansfield away game on 28th could be vital to how the season pans out. If we can take points from those teams immediately around us that’ll do us the world of good.

Hopefully a bit of a ‘Derby’ atmosphere with a good turn out from Donny should make for a great atmosphere!
