Just seen this on Twitter:
Brighton’s starting XI yesterday that beat Liverpool 3-0 cost
Sanchez £Nil
Estupian £14m
Dunk £Nil
Colwill £Nil (loan)
Groß £3m
Mac Allister £7m
Lallana £Nil
March £Nil
Caicedo £4.5m
Mitoma£2.5m
Ferguson £Nil
Total £31m
It’s not all about splashing the cash, but about being smart with a good recruitment strategy.
Granted it is all about wages in league 2 but the principle still applies.
-
I’d like to see their wage bill.
Different worlds.
Mitoma is prob worth more than the entire current rovers squad on paper.
And you could probably buy the entire DRFC for 31 mil.
-
For £31 million you could buy the whole of Rovers as it stands and pay the wages bill for a few years.
-
The latest set of account for Brighton and Hove Albion relates to the 2020/21 season, where their total wage bill for that season was £107.4 million, marginally up from £101.8m the previous season (2019/20).
I would estimate our current wage bill is in the region of £2 to £3 million.
-
I meant it’s low relative to the success they are having in the league that they are in.
Compare that to Liverpool
-
I just checked what year their new ground opened (2011) in their affluent "new catchment area" meaning new supporters with no previous association with the club.
" The Amex Stadium
After years of hard work, the club moved into the American Express Community Stadium in 2011. Since a memorable 2-1 victory over Doncaster Rovers in front of 20,219 supporters, Albion’s home has grown to holding over 30,000 fans and now stages Premier League football after the club’s rise to the top tier in 2017."
it's just coincidence their first match there was against yours truly. FULL STOP.
if you read this
https://www.kentonline.co.uk/medway/sport/gillingham-brad-galinson-279806/
the owner talks about sustainability etc etc and says he looked for a club to buy for a year -- shame it wasn't us you might say, because he SEEMS to have the quality of an owner we would welcome. ????
let's see if this club can have even half the success of Brighton over the next ten years
-
You never really get a true picture until you see income v expenditure and the funding gaps, then equate that to points gained .I.e. £ per point etc.
Kieran McGuire does quite a bit of this analysis and makes very interesting and sometimes frightening reading.
-
Nice to see one their goal scorers with my birthday on his shirt....MARCH 7 !
-
It doesn't tell the whole Brighton story from the days in league one at the athletics stadium .
They were bankrolled to the tune of £207m to attain PL status plus the owner funded the Amex Stadium at £93m .
-
For £31 million you could buy the whole of Rovers as it stands and pay the wages bill for a few years.
And still have quite a few millions left.
-

I’m surprised how many people in this thread have actually missed what seems to me like a very obvious point you were making. Brighton are doing incredibly well - of course their wage bill is high compared to a League Two club, but I imagine it’s in the bottom 5, possibly even bottom 3 of the PL. The money they spend is spent incredibly wisely.
-
Their success story is something they should be proud of.
They are an incredibly well run Club.
The point you make ncRover is a very good and valid one.
-
Thanks Nick and Campsall, glad you guys got it.
In light of Knoyle going to Stockport with increased wages, there will be a replacement somewhere who is better and for less money.
-

It's less a question of the size of the resource, more how well it is utilised/maximised.
-
But equally how they rose from league one playing at an athletics stadium is also getting missed here .
They may well be run today in a sustainable way but the journey to the PL and the new stadium is a different story .

Under Klopp net spend works out about £28m per year, so what's your point?

It’s not about being sustainable or the investment required to bring them up. Yesterday they comprehensively outplayed a team who have been in the Champions League for however many seasons, and recent winners of basically every competition going, who have a transfer spend and wage bill that absolutely dwarfs that of Brighton. They’re above a number of teams who are spending significant multiples of what they are. They lose first team players like Bissouma, Butn and Maupay and replace them with better players. That’s clearly something to be admired and applauded and a benchmark to aim for.
-
Marc Cucurella to Chelsea for £60m.
-
I’m not saying that they didn’t have investment to get to where they are. That wasn’t my point. I’m trying to stop people losing their minds over the KK situation.
Great coaching and recruitment policy (Brighton in this example) can trump excessive spending (Liverpool spending 80 Mill for Nunez, Chelsea).
Brighton are above both in the league.
We don’t have to have the absolute highest paid players in this division to perform well and be at the top end. Do Leyton Orient pay higher wages than us?

No i very much doubt their wage bill is higher than ours this season.
This is the 1st season for many a year ( possibly since 2002/03 ) that Leyton Orient have had a higher ave gate than us.
-
The latest set of accounts available for Leyton Orient relate to the 2020/21 season, when they were in League Two. Their total wage bill then was £4.9m and the previous season 2019/20 when they were in the same league, was £4.4m.
I’d find it hard to believe their budget has gone backwards this season. As a result, their wage bill this season you could estimate is around twice our wage bill.

Is that you comparing all staff to just our playing staff perhaps? Because are our accounts not available to see? I can’t see how that can possibly be a correct conclusion.
Not sure on the accuracy of this site. Still has us in league 1 but the players are all up to date.

It's another one of those clickbait sites providing salary 'information' I'm afraid nc. Highly unlikely to be anywhere near accurate.

No, it is me reviewing the Leyton Orient audited accounts lodged with Companies House.
I am though guessing at our own total salary bill as we are one of the relatively few clubs who don't publish this information.

There’s a lot of guesswork given we as fans don’t really know, but Silent majority has (I believe, apologies if I’m wrong here) said that we have a wage bill in the top 5/6 of the division. There’s absolutely no way that Orient would have double our wage bill if that’s the case.

I know thanks. I don’t doubt the accuracy of the Leyton Orient accounts. But for me the guesswork on our accounts from you has to be way off surely.
-
It's total guesswork from me, as there is hasn't been any information in the public domain since April 2016, when we published accounts for the 2014/15 season. For that season we were in League One, when we had just come down from the Championship. Our total wage bill then was £4.1m and were running an operating loss of £2.1m.
-
And it has taken Brighton out of its 6 years in the the PL 4 years to get off the bottom with only the last two year escaping the mire of possible relegation.
And look how many managers ..............

Marc Cucurella to Chelsea for £60m.
How much compensation for Potter?
-
According to talksport radio Friday £20 million RR when they were talking about his possible sacking after 15 games in charge.
-
They are owned by the smartest man in football. That’s the biggest difference between us and them.

So your telling me during the Covid season, games played in empty stadiums, they had a wage bill of 4.9 million.
Sorry if that’s correct then they have a very wealthy benefactor who is bank rolling them.
I am not aware they do but I maybe incorrect.
They would in all likely hood be in deep financial trouble without that benefactor with those figures you have posted CBcb.
I seriously can’t see them being accurate. If they are then they have massively underachieved in the last few years haven’t they.
There is only Bradford City imo that could sustain that sort of wage bill in League 2 without huge inputs from the owners.
-
They are owned by the smartest man in football. That’s the biggest difference between us and them.
He needs to be more than smart.
Very very wealthy or he is borrowing vast sums, which if the case, will then end in a meltdown for the club as it always does.

No debts can be paid. Especially when your in the prem and can sell multiple players you got for nothing for 60m.
I wouldn’t want the owners of DRFC borrowing hundreds of millions but there’s not many big and successful businesses that haven’t borrowed money to become more successful. So wouldn’t say it always ends in tears.
Issue is if they don’t repay debts while times are good and the owners just take out the club instead

Just to supplement the discussion, this might help. Some points already covered.

That has shocked me DBR
I had no idea they had built up so much debt. They have been described as a model club. Well run and not living beyond their means.
They do have a very wealthy owner so if he is able and willing to service that debt then they should be ok.
But as you say “eye watering”
Football is a crazy business. The money in the Premier League is beyond crazy.
-
Once people look below the surface at the clubs they rever for progressing through the leagues they might realise the only thing they have in common to when they rubbed shoulders with us is the club name. They are entirely different clubs now.
Brentford, Bournemouth and others have risked huge sums. You could combine the wealth of most League One and Two Clubs and it still may not be enough to get to the top tier.
We know the obscenity that is the parachute payments but even worse than that is the misuse of the payments to secure even more finance and debt.
-
They may of had Money to build the ground and fund a good side. There a big club who draws big crowds. They have filled that every week from th first game. The fan base was always there. They just played in a 7 k capacity stadium. They have spent wisely imo.
