Title: RIP Motty
Post by: normal rules on February 23, 2023, 09:56:28 am
Football commentating legend. RIP. Aged 77.
An integral part of our football supporting lives for the last 50 years, complete with his beloved sheepskin coat.

I always admired the sheer enthusiasm he had for the game. The excitement in his voice was never forced, the pleasure football gave him was obvious.

According to his obit he started out in broadcasting as a freelancer at BBC Radio Sheffield in the 60's before getting his break on Radio 2 and TV, so you never know.

He was Mr football to me when growing up in the 80s although as I became an adult I preferred Barry Davies.

I don’t recall him calling commenting on any rovers game, indeed our famous cup win over QPR, I’m sure the beeb reporter that day was Tony Gubba.

RIP Motty

Lol. I am sad he's died. He was, and always will be, an institution. But for me, he suffered, badly, from verbal diarrhoea.

Motty’s commentary of Platani in ‘84 & Marco Tardelii in the World Cup final in 1982 was Motson at his brilliant best & most excitable.

Yes mate, I know that.
A bit uncalled for considering that Motty has just passed away. (In my opinion).

I think starting out with Lol is worse. This isn’t Maggie Thatcher or Pol Pot we’re talking about.

Third of the "Holy Trinity" of commentators along with Barry Davies and David Coleman.

I believe this was one of his first major games the famous Hereford v Newcastle FA Cup tie from 72 which I've just seen the date and it took place on my 3rd birthday!
