Which opposition would you ideally like to kick off the new season against?
I’ll go for Brad City.
Home or away I’m not fussed. Either way the opposition will guarantee a big crowd.
-
No preference but purely as a prediction;
Tranmere (a)
-
Home game, don’t care who
COYR
-
Selfish reasons - Harrogate away then I wouldn’t be interested in the scramble for tickets due to being away
-
Would normally like an away game but on this occasion, a home game to showcase our new beginning, manager, players, shirts, catering etc etc. Really want to see the place as full as possible so for that reason I would like Wrexham, for all the interest that will stir.
Yes, I know the boot was on the other foot when we beat Leyton Orient all those years ago, but it would be great if we could shut a few up with a win in the full glare of the media.

A few weeks ago I wanted Wrexham away but I've got a really busy July and August coming up so Wrexham at home for me too and for the same reasons as you.
Be great to KO with a 10k plus home crowd.
-
Notts County away, big crowd and atmosphere,
-
An away game please. I'm away on holiday on the opening weekend.
Sutton, Gillingham, Wimbledon, Colchester or Crawley
-
It’s Wrexham at home.
-
Home, Stockport. Big crowd.
Think if we get Wrexham then it will be a Friday night for tv
-
Notts County away to test our mettle!
-
I’d like an easy game at home. get a win, and a nice confidence boost!
-
With a new manager, new players, and a new way of playing, it might take a while for it all to gel. Clubs like Wrexham, Notts County, Stockport, and Bradford will have momentum from last season. I'd rather be playing them later.
Morecambe at home would do me for starters.
-

Always a Championship match on TV the 1st Friday night.
-

And which games will be easy?
No such thing.
Some may turn out to be easy but no one can say which ones will be if any.

I knew someone would respond with that as I wrote it. Maybe Crawley at home?
-
Let's have Swindon at home.
-
Crewe away
-
May as well start as we mean to go on, Wrexham at their place, steal their thunder when everyone expects different.
Head up and straight in, no pussyfooting about.
-
Notts County away, Barrow home, Walsall away, Mansfield away, I reckon.
-

Always a Championship match on TV the 1st Friday night.
The rules have changed about the number of EFL games that can be shown outside the 3pm Saturday kick off.
Can't remember the numbers but isn't it summat like 30 odd more games across the EFL?
-
Surprised to see a lot of folk wanting the big hitters to start with like Stockport, Wrexham, Notts etc. I'd rather have a winnable looking home game like Crawley or Newport.
Not saying any game will be easy but we quite often seem to get these games where we're the incidental part of a wider narrative and it never feels like it ends that well for us.
-
It will be tinpot fc away. Think of the most tinpot team in the league and we'll be playing them away. Their backs will be up at the prospect of playing massive DRFC and tonk us 2-1. Setting in motion a miserable season.

I bet you’re fun at parties.
-
It'll be one of the promoted teams or one of the relegated teams !
-
Grimsby at home would be ideal. Big crowd and atmosphere but not a strong side.
Generally speaking, MK Dons seem to be going under people’s radars when mentioning the strong teams. I’d put them as favourites.
-
For 2 and a half years we have been on a massively downward trajectory heading for relegation from league two next season.
We are often late sacking managers or replacing managers and start building the new team half way through the transfer window.
Things have drastically changed this season with McCann’s appointment and all these early signings which hopefully means we can hit the season running. I will follow the bookie’s odds and hope we face some of the top teams early on and we give them a good hiding because we are better prepared. Just bring it on whoever it is. I have faith in McCann.
-
Notts County away, Barrow home, Walsall away, Mansfield away, I reckon.
That’s tough on the opening day. Prefer it if we can we play them at 3 day intervals at least please.
I suppose at least you didn’t pick Gillingham and Barrow away out of those 4 games.
That would have been some day. :saywhat:

Or one of the other 17 teams. ;)

Ignore me, Camps. Swain has just put me right.

How often have we won the opening match of the season since our return to the league in 2003/04
So that’s 20 seasons.
Now I have not done any research into this but off the top of my head I can only clearly remember 4 times.
I will guess that it is no more than 6 though.
Over to you Dutch Uncle or someone else who has this knowledge.
The 4 i remember are Leyton Orient A 03/04 in the first season of course.
Blackpool H I think was either 04/05 or 05/06 I remember Colin Hendry playing for them.
Derby A 1st championship season 08/09
Preston A guessing at 09/10 or 10/11
How many of the 1st games which were at home have we drawn. I think it’s most of them.

How many of the 1st games which were at home have we drawn. I think it’s most of them.
In the 20 seasons since we got back in the league, we have played 8 opening games at home and 12 away.
Home record is W1 D5 L2 - the solitary home win was against Blackpool at Belle Vue back in 2004/05.
Away record is W6 D3 L3 - our last opening day win was the last time McCann was in charge, away at Southend..
Overall it's W7 D8 L5 on the opening day since 2003/4.
The overwhelming majority of our opening games were away in this period up until 2019/20 to 2021/22, where we started off with home games 3 seasons running (albeit one of them was the behind-closed-doors game against MK.)

Thanks Pib.
Didn’t think our record was as good as that away from home.
Can’t believe I forgot the Southend game. 2018/19
So that’s 5 with the other 4 that i mentioned.
Which were the 2 others then Pib away from home. Gone completely blank on them

Walsall away in 2012/13 (Cotterill from 40 yards and all that), plus Yeovil away in 2014/15 when Dickov was in charge and we'd just been relegated from the Championship. The scorers that day were Curtis Main, Harry Forrester and Theo Robinson.

I must be getting old then.
I was at those 2 games also. :headbang:
Last opening day game I missed was 1998/99 at Dover.
So we need an away game opening day then. We do better away.
If it’s Gillingham at home get your money on a draw as we have had them at home twice and drew them both.

It did.... well, sort of. The Blackpool goalkeeper looked to have caught it and it slipped out of his hands.

Today's the day. 9am.

Memorable for all the wrong reasons was the first game of the season away at Rotherham around 1989 ish. Full away end, we lost 3-0, our goalkeeper sent off (Paul Malcolm?) for kicking a Millers striker up the arse and a really, really dodgy walk back to the station afterwards.
-
Well the ‘leaked’ fixtures that never seem to be right have us at Barrow away.
-
I would like Morecambe away for a seaside weekender for me.
-
Wrexham away would be a nice start...

They're late.

Harrogate at home. Perfect. Easy home fixture and can hopefully banish the memories of that nightmarish evening of the same fixture from last season.
-
Home to Harrogate....that'll do nicely

Pleased with that, they should bring an ok following and home is a good start.

Oh well, it will be my birthday weekend trip instead, that’ll do.

Don’t like that word ncRover. No such thing.
The game isn’t played on paper.
-
Great fixture.
Really glad it's at home. That's me already telling work that I am not available that weekend under any circumstances.
-
First three home games absolute crackers - Harrogate, Notts C and Mansfield. Big test of how far we've come but get some good crowds in and back the team and we'll be flying!

It’s also my Birthday Weekend, on the 6th

Only going to miss Crewe A & Colchester H in late November plus FA Cup 2nd round game 1st Sat in Dec, if we get that far this season.
Pity we had a midweek fixture at home that week. Still at least it isn’t one of the big games that I will miss.
-
Will Notts County at home get moved to midday or Friday night? Big races event with band on the same Saturday. Selfishly I hope it's Friday as I am at said event. If not I'm leaving it for 2 hours
-
Home game against Harrogate which should be a winnable game, what’s not to like
COYR
-
That’ll do me.
At home against a ‘localish’ team.
Important to start with a win & if we can’t win this one…..
-
Excellent. A really good home start followed by two bigger local tests. Those should wet the appetite even more.
The Eco Moat should be seeing bumper crowds in those opening matches. What's wrong with League Two eh?!
I always look at the run in, and we've been blessed with one which on paper will look favourable compared to our opponents. Nothing is won on paper though but bring it on.
COYR

A long trip to Gillingham on the last day to clinch the title lol!

I'd rather wrap it up at home against Wrexham then have a few games to spare for the party.....not being greedy like
-
A long trip to Gillingham on the last day to clinch the title lol!
That’s the one fixture I have consistently avoided over the last few years.
Hate that ground.
Open end for away fans unless moved to the side. Never did when I went so if wet you get drenched.
Terrible record at that ground.
If we need a point or 3 to win the league or secure a play off place I will have to go.
It is also a very very long time since I missed the last game of the season.
So Priestfield it seems that here I come again after a long break. Been there 6 times I think it is and never seen a win for us.
Hope we are promoted the week before or even earlier. Sounds like the sensible option based on our record in Kent.

I can’t make the following Saturday match.

Only once have I seen them win there and in view of the date, it was not a good time to be travelling a long way - 29 Dec 2019.
It was in McCann's year and I remember it because Gillingham did not look as though they were trying. Either that or we just made it look easy - what a team!! So the consolation is that under the present leadership we are unbeaten there. Although it's relatively close for me, I still hate going there. The Medway conurbation is very depressed economically and socially. I usually park a mile or so away and have to walk the length of the main shopping streets.
I may have mentioned this before, but it was probably the game when the Gills fans cheered when Marquis's name was announced because he had a successful loan there - so credit to them for that!
Gills 1 : Rovers 3 (Marquis, Wilks, Andrew.)

Yes it was one of the other 17 teams. I just worked on the law of averages 17 v 6 odds were always in my favour.

That Friday night away at Mansfield on 29th of December looks spicy

Disney!

Wrexham at home on Easter Monday nailed on to be on the TV.
Why?
Cause it will have been a grand total of 4 days since Wrexham were last on the telly.

Gutted I'm missing this, I'm going to a day festival at Darlington arena with james headlining.
All im saying is i hope i come home to a five-0 win for the rovers.
