Title: Copps
Post by: mushRTID on June 16, 2023, 09:16:58 pm
There’s obviously been a lot going on the last few weeks to talk about.

So have I missed what’s going on with Copps? Has his role officially changed or is it just being kept quiet?

If it has changed it is obviously being kept quiet. We have been told nothing.

My humble opinion is that club legend Copps has been an abject failure in his assigned role and a waste of a wage.  This opinion in no way detracts from my admiration and respect for his playing career.

He was lumbered with a system though that was being run on a lesser budget than now and which was trying to develop a new model for the club. It didn't work but he was only a cog in that system, not the system itself. I think he went into it for the right reasons and tried to make it work but nobody can call the last two seasons as anything other than a total shitshow and we had to come calling on Terry to bail us out yet again.

Interesting that Huddersfield have it seems abandoned that structure too

I fear he’s failed in avoiding to fall into exactly the same trap as Schofield, ambiguity.

I sincerely hope that he can find a role within the club that suits him & all parties. I doubt under GM that will be under the heading of ‘Head of Football (development)’ which means some serious round the table talks between Copps, Baldwin & McCann.

Maybe it should have been what has he achieved in the role?

How can anyone say he has failed if they don't know what he has done.

From some of the transfers done so far, we know some players were on our radar before McCann was in place. That doesn't mean the players weren't on McCanns list prior to his arrival however, I suspect with one or two the club had already done the groundwork.

It's always likely McCann will take the credit for the signing, as it's he who will take ultimate responsibility for results, which is fair enough.

So, it's easy to perceive Copps role is less active than what it actually is and he is making a positive contribution to identifying players and getting involved in the initial contacts etc.

The pace at which we’ve done business certainly points to something going on in the background. Easy to say it’s all down to McCann and that might be true but none of us know for sure. If the funds were available would we have done this last summer?

My take on it would be that talks with McCann and the club were ongoing quite some time before the end of the season, within these talks, I would guess McCann and copps would have been in discussions with the types of players we were to keep, and move on, and also which ones to go for, I’m sure some of the clubs targets would have been shared with grant and he could have taken the names away, analyse them and make a decision on them, then him and the club could move on targets quicker in the summer.

I would imagine copps would have been working hard over the end of the season to identify players that would have been within our target budget who were coming up to the end of their contracts and making a player list with player profile to feed into the wider recruitment team. Maybe even putting feelers out to agents to make their clients aware of the interest.

Very likely. I heard Copps when speaking to fans outside the Eco, just before DS sacking, we already have 'a few players already lined up'. One of those was definitely Richard Wood. Although by then McCann was already in the frame for the job. It's  not inconceivable that GB kept McCann informed in that period.

A lot of the signings are similar to our signings last year imo. Just a step up in quality but the profile is similar. That suggests copps is involved to me

I think you’re spot on Arsenal of the North. The speed at which we have signed players suggests the background work has been ongoing for some time - which also suggests Copps has been heavily involved.

Plus the North East connection?

Luke Molyneux, Jamie Sterry, and Owen Bailey all hail from the same talent pool and are all known to each other.

Which also suggests GM may have been involved in the background prior to Danny's sacking. The speed of GM and the signings is pretty impressive for Rovers recent history

I think Coppinger has been working really hard , on targets got the club for some time . If that wasn’t the case things wouldn’t have gone so quick. He’s probably had a list already prepared, the manager has had a look, liked what he saw and signed them if they’ve fit in with what was looking for.

You can see players who have been winner’s previously with other clubs , has been a major theme of targeting what they want. This is how it should be every pre season.
It’s all about getting a good pre season in, building understanding and developing team cohesion and confidence in each other.

The Hartlepool/Newcastle connections are a massive suggestion to me that Copps was a fundamental part of these signings. We even had one of them on trial at the start of last season! Suggests we wanted to see him stay fit for a season, the previous regime didn't want him or he was a luxury we couldn't afford once Tomlin came in.

Think Free Press said that Wood and two of the NE lads had been lined up while Schofield was still here.

I think he was, the fact he was seen at games last season, how quick it was to get him in the club following Schofields sacking and how quick the transfer business has started, I can't remember the last time we were this pro active.
