Title: Politics 2023
Post by: BillyStubbsTears on July 25, 2023, 01:17:39 pm
This is what we have become.

https://twitter.com/RishiSunak/status/1683782095213035522

A UK PM writing that the official opposition is on the side of criminal gangs.

Just, simply unbelievable.

I knew this lot were going to go all in on the Culture War, but this is breathtaking. Absolutely no regard for the damage they are doing to political discourse.

Went to the GC on Sunday.
Rosie Winterton warned us that that's all they've got now, other than arguing with each other.

Is this any worse than those notorious images that implied Sunak supported grooming gangs, knife crime, and so on? I'm not usually into bothsidesism but in this case both parties are in the gutter already, so who cares?

Starmer was pointing out that the Tories had cut police investment by £1.6 billion, leaving them unable to deal with the crimes you mention.

Right. You sure you want to defend this?

No I'm not defending that, it is below the belt for sure. I hadn't seen that before.
But you mentioned knife crime, which the Tories have tried to crucify the Labour Mayor of London with over and over again. The massive hole in police and criminal justice funding isn't going to help is it?

Macho, that Labour tweet has been posted on here before and I don’t recall anyone saying it was a below the belt thing to do.

Edit: Until TT has just done.

MM.

You're preaching to the converted on that one. I started a thread on the subject at the time.

https://www.drfc-vsc.co.uk/index.php?topic=287598.msg1227970#msg1227970

I don't need any lectures on how disgusting that was.

You might also remember that several prominent Labour figures loudly voiced similar opinions. I'm not expecting anything similar from this lot, though I'd be delighted to be proved wrong.

And you might also reflect on the fact that Sunak's message came not from a party political account, but from the personal account of the UK PM himself. It matters. It drags the office itself into the gutter.

For me, the term ‘this is what we have become’ relates to the state of British politics, rather than one party or another. You can dismiss ‘bothsidesism’ or not, but when it comes to below the belt tactics, they simply are as bad as each other.

To be fair, yes, that is different that it's posted from Sunak's personal account. And I do see the argument that, yes, he should be held to a higher standard as PM. But those arguments get a hell of a lot weaker in the face of that Labour post. It reinforces that "they're all as bad as each other" thing that you see so often. And yeah, senior Labour figures criticised it, but they all also denied they had any part in the campaign, and refused to take it down.

It just highlights how stupid that campaign was, because it tacitly legitimised this kind of stuff.

Gutter politics this from Sunak.

Normally when somebody says something stupid or outrageous like this there is a smidgen of twisted logic behind it - not that saying this would ever be acceptable.

But for the life of me I can't fathom where an earth he's coming from with this accusation at all.

Cheers wilts, I had forgotten about that.
The thread morphed into one about Saville so perhaps where I had got confused.
Surely though, the post came from Labour HQ so it is hard to believe that KS hadn’t been aware it was going out.

It's what I've been saying for 18 months.

They have nothing else to fight with.

Economically they have been a catastrophe - worst 13 years we've had in way over a century.

They have no idea of what they want the country to be or aspire to.

So they are using the Republicans' playbook.  Culture War. Drive a wedge through society and tell your supporters that you are on their side and the other side is wicked.

Get used to it because there's going yo be years and years of this from the Tories.

Just looked at BST's old thread and I did post on it and condemned the tweet then.
Can't remember it at all, must be losing it. Old age eh?

It's all to be expected, however the most embarrassing point about this is without doubt a serving PM putting a link to the Daily Zeig Heil.

That's the same Daily Mail that ran articles decrying Labour's posters back in May.

Still, who ever expected consistency or honesty from The Mail?

Great clip of BBC journo Nicky Campbell introducing Keith as Nigel Farage;

What a f**king outrageous insult.

That's probably the worst defamation that Nigel Farage has ever experienced.

Only because defamation has to be untrue.

Me thinks to confuse Starmer with Nigel Farage and then suggesting it is an easy mistake to make is both untrue and defamatory to Farage's reputation regarding what he stands for. I suppose those who actually know what Starmer stands for would feel the same.

Have you seen the full clip? No, of course you won't have done. Some confirmed Starmer hater chose where to end that clip to give the "He looks like he's just shat himself" impression.

I used to quite respect your take, but this past couple of years...it's risible. You and the adherents of the Church of the Blessed Jeremy. You're as bad as the disinformation people on the far right.

Post a link to the full clip BST, if you think it makes a relevant point.

Not really understanding what you are trying to say here, the link was posted because it is funny.
Maybe your humour by-pass prevents you having a laugh at the blessed Keith.

It's a bit rich to describe it as "disinformation", as it actually happened.
I will take you seriously on the subject of disinformation when you allow yourself to post criticism of Team Keith, as well as criticising the Tories.

Both deserve to be criticised, because both are acting in the interests of the establishment and corporate sponsors.
Until you free yourself, you are part of the problem.
