I know that not everyone is into women's football, but I was proud of the girls today. They've always had good technical skills, but today they had to show grit and fight, when playing the whole of extra time with 10 players, against a team that had bossed them throughout the game.
As for the penalty shoot-out, Chloe Kelly showed exactly how to bury a penalty under pressure.
-
They were very fortunate to get past Nigeria. They missed their first penalty too!
-
Yes, a very tough day at the office against a very strong Nigeria.
Not very often we see the petulance shown by Lauren James in the women's game.
From that point I thought they managed the game really well. Unfortunately for Nigeria, the pressure of the moment seemed to get to them. Less so for us.
Hope they learn from that and go and win it. It will not be easy that's for sure.
-
Some really terrible penalties. Man City not great yesterday either. Just hit the target.
-
As a football fan it's great to see football and that includes women's football. A win is a win no matter how it is achieved and they are through to the quarter finals. A shame Lauren James let herself down so badly. Sarina Wiegman is doing England proud and it's nice to see a team that nearly always wins.
-
To win any tournament you need luck. Let's hope ours continues and we lift the trophy.
COME ON ENGLAND!
-
Just to add an addendum. Chloe's penalty has been measured at 111 mph. More powerful than any goal scored in the men's Premier League in 2022/23.
-
111kph more like which is 68mph. Don’t let the truth get in the way of a good lie though eh

I wasn't lying. I don't tell lies, I read it wrong.
I was right about the second part though, which is more relevant.
-
Not comparable though Benrahma’s was the fastest average speed on a goal scored outside the area. Not a dead ball from 12 yards. You can’t just cherry pick certain stats.
Good pen though regardless especially under the pressure.

I am very surprised that the Lionesses’ World Cup progress hasn’t been discussed on the forum before today.

The World Cup started two weeks ago.

The games being on at half 8 in a morning probably don't help. I'm on my morning commute at that time and miss a big chunk of the games.
Some great stuff this year though. You can tell how high the standard is across the board now based on teams like Nigeria. England rode their luck today, and there are some tough teams on either side of the draw, but we have a great chance of winning it. Just a shame James will likely miss it, but she can't complain.
-
I'm puzzled as to why Lionesses were saved by the Crossbar 3 times
I'm off the opinion that the belter of a shot from Left Back was too high , and (I agree) had beaten Earps but it merely hit the Bar
I could forgive Commentators and Pundits if they said Nigeria were unlucky to hit the Bar because that's not the same
I know what I mean , but it's from the same stable as a Goalkeeper in a game scrambles a ball away and Commentator says " he / she just about kept that out "
No , no , they did keep it out.
-
Three ex Belles in that team too.

I have watched the England games and some of the others.
The standard across the board is much better than it was five or six years ago although some teams are still a bit kick and chase with two or three good players trying to pass the ball.
Still good to watch though and you just accept that it isn’t going to be like the mens game.

Millie Bright and Belles ( quote in Wiki).
Club career
2009–2015: Doncaster Rovers Belles
Described by the club as "a tall, powerful, athletic striker with a good eye for goal," Bright made her Belles debut as a substitute against Watford at the Keepmoat Stadium in August 2009.[13] She scored her first goal on the occasion of her first start, in the following month's 5–0 FA Women's Premier League Cup win at Leeds City Vixens.[13] She was awarded a contract for the inaugural 2011 season of the FA WSL, making five substitute appearances.[14] At her own request, Bright then went on loan to Leeds United in their 2011–12 FA Women's Premier League season and debuted on her 18th birthday, scoring a goal after entering play as a substitute.[15]
When Bright returned to Doncaster she had developed into a regular first team starter.[16] Bright was critical of The Football Association's decision to demote Doncaster Rovers Belles from the WSL in favour of Manchester City one game into the 2013 season: "It was heartbreaking. It felt like we weren't respected or even wanted in the league, purely based on money. It should be about the level you play at, not how much money you have. That season, we just felt what's the point?"[17]
-
« Still good to watch though and you just accept that it isn’t going to be like the men's game. »
Let’s hope NOT Donnywolf ,in many many ways though the cynicism of the stamping incident by James is maybe the thin end of a wedge .Football quickly develops rôle models in big tournaments.
-
They don’t look at their best at all, but that’s probably got to do with the amount of injuries to some of their best players prior to this tournament. That’s now compounded by arguably the best player in the team being suspended, probably for the rest of the competition.
I think they will come up just short, possibly at the semi final stage. I think it might end up being a Spain v Australia final, with Spain edging it.
-
The keeper also played for Belles. You would imagine that had the authorities not cheated us, we would have had some representation at this and previous world cups.
-
I’d have Japan as favourites at present, followed by the Netherlands. Hosts Australia can’t be ruled out either.
Before the tournament I thought England would reach the quarter finals but with a poor ish build up and key players injured, they wouldn’t be my choice for winners. Nor the USA who despite eventually turning up vs Sweden got wha they deserved IMHO.
The rankings don’t make much sense. No way are Nigeria the 40th best country - even if England weren’t at their best the opponents were very good nonetheless..
But in last years Euros England overcame potentially better opponents in Spain and Germany to win, and without Lauren James in the squad.
Anything is possible. England don’t concede goals often (only one penalty in regular game time) in 4 matches. Semi finals would be beyond my expectations but they are still in the tournament so could win.
As for no comments here yet, I am surprised too, and had thought of starting threads but have been mega busy elsewhere. Nowt to do with the domestic mens season starting, that’s just a silly comment.
-
I don't fancy England against these Columbians - they seem very physical and might out muscle our girls.... or bump them of the park.
-
As it stands, facing Columbia next will be another different challenge. They will be very disruptive and hope to catch us on the break. Our discipline and organisation should be enough but it's goals that win games.
I wasn't very hopeful of England's chances until the China game when she changed the formation leading to us playing more on the deck. James got the headlines but the formation change gave us the advantage. Missing James is not the end of the world.
Tend to agree that Spain, Japan and the Dutch look very strong.
-

Our girls can take the physical stuff too. Nigeria gave us a real test.
-
I am very surprised that the Lionesses’ World Cup progress hasn’t been discussed on the forum before today.
Because now the men's season has begun there's more interest in Hull away on a Tuesday night. Soz but just the way it is
That, or perhaps it's because every time women's football is discussed on this board some bore feels the need to join the thread purely to belittle it.
-

30mph less than the men’s EPL goal speed record.

I think it’s great to watch, some very good technical players and, whilst some cynicism is creeping in, generally played in a great spirit. England are not technically the most accomplished but their team ethic is strong and they have an excellent manager. I fancy the Aussies, or rather the Matildas , to win.
-

They might not waltz it though.

There is quite a bit of cynicism creeping into the womens game.
Lots of shirt pulling and diving on show on this World Cup too.
-
That’s the Dutch gone now. Sweden one up on Japan too so what do I know.!
-
Japan have been awful so far. Sweden should be 3 up at least.
-
2-0 now..
Could be more, two outstanding saves from the Japan goalie.
Japan hasn’t had anything going forward, unlike when they were so clinical vs Spain.
Unless they get those breaks it’s game over - then again it’s never really game over at 2-0 after 50 minutes.!
-
Japan much better since going 2-0 down but that was never a penalty.. replays show no contact so why the hell didn't VAR ask the ref to review.?
Missed anyway.
-

Missed anyway.
I was asking the same question. Never a pen, a clear dive by the Japan player.
-
I thought she tripped over the ball or her own feet. Such a clear mistake by the ref.
Had Japan played like that from the start, it could have been much different.
Another potential winner gone.
-
Well the equality hasn’t happened there hasn’t exactly been a media overload with the tournament
-
Not quite sure what you mean.. every match live on tv or iplayer, dedicated pages on bbc website etc, several lioness documentaries knocking about. Lauren James hasn’t seemed to have had the Beckham 98 treatment, perhaps because England are still in.
-

She intentionally stubbed her toe into the ground then dived.
How could VAR not pick that up?
-
Australia vs France tight as a gnat’s chuff.. can’t call this one with 10 mins extra time to go..
-
Australia it is then, after a 20 penalty shoot out..
-
Very close in englands game too..
I would put Kelly on, Toone not having her best game.. Bright immense again.
-
Thoroughly deserved win today and onto the semi-finals.
For the 3rd World Cup in a row.
A fantastic achievement.
Personally I enjoy watching England Women's team play much more than the men's team. Personal preference.
There's such a great spirit and a winning mentality about this England team even when not at their very best.
A team we should be proud of.
-
It's coming home.
-
Come on England.!
Very tough game today. Other countries have shown that the fifa rankings are pants, many of the Matildas play in the WSL so realistically it’s fairly even between the sets of players..
Disappointing if England lose today but there’ll be no shame against tough opponents..
-
Brilliant performance, Hemp has been unplayable
-
Outstanding. Go on the girls. Ozzy tears in the crowd and on the pitch. Superb to a woman.
-
Some performance that.
The way Hemp and Russo gell together whilst being two different players is a joy to watch. Killer instincts knowing when to stick or twist whilst being aware where each other are. A very special partnership up front.
Brilliant game management.
-
:clapping: very well played
-
Brilliant from England, can we have Lauren Hemp at the Rovers,
-
I agree as said above, Hemp was unplayable today, a constant thorne in the Matilda's side. Her harrowing the defender to get a shot away for her goal was great to see. Well played ladies, and good luck on Sunday. COYL!!
-
Good motm performance by Kerr as well. Wonder goal but then those 2 golden chances , thankfully missed both
-
These are big game players. How refreshing is that from an England side? Just one more to go.
-
Personally, I have thoroughly enjoyed watching England Women's games for the last few years and the current team is outstanding. Having now put down the host nation, winning the final is highly likely. Go Girls! About time England won another world cup.
-
The perfect weekend would be for Rovers to beat Notts County, and England to win the World Cup.
We've all been starved of success for too long.
-
I'd never been as nervous about a semi since I watched Brokeback Mountain.
-
Watched the game on my phone at work and I was punching the air like a good one when the goals went in .
I'm a convert from the Euros and to be honest I wouldn't have given it the time of day before that .
It actually starting to mean summat , I mean proper mean summat .
We were meant to take the grandkids to the coast on Sunday , well that's cancelled , luckily they are both young enough not to know they were going to the seaside on Sunday if you know what I mean .
-
England are in a football World Cup final!
Fantastic.
A great performance today. Thoroughly deserved to win against good opponents in an 'away' game and against a cowed referee.
They've really grown into this tournament and have got better game by game.
A completely together team of ruthless winners.
-
Brilliant stuff. I watch the NWSL here, follow San Diego Wave. They joined the league last season and were in a 6k stadium, moving to a new 35k stadium (Snapdragon Stadium - named after the Qualcomm product - they funded a lot of the construction for San Diego State University). It’s great to watch too. Quality is high.
-
Couldn’t watch all the game due to work but that’s already an amazing achievement..
World Cup finalists.!!! Get in.!!
-
Brilliant achievement really hope we can beat Spain
-
what I appreciated was the fact that there is no need to segregate fans for no expression of violence at any match!
-
Hope they beat Spain, been a great to watch tournament. Come on England
-
Unless they need to change tactics for this opposition, or if there are minor injuries from training, I can’t see the starting 11 changing. Then you’ve got the likes of James and Kelly to come on and make an impact if required..
-
Talking to a Millwall fan in the week, I said that I seemed to remember that they had had a women’s team going way back. You mean the “Lionesses” he replied - they won the Cup back in the 90s! Since then they have had tough times due to lack of finances. But in the early days, like the Belles, they were right up there.
-
Not long to go now..
Could do with the lionesses chewing us lot up - football doesn’t always have to be crap does it?
-
Come on England!!
-
England to win 2-0. Let's go!
-
Come on England - you can do this.
-
England to win 2-0. Let's go!
I’d take 2-1 right now..
-
Getting schooled. Started well but second half of first half barely touched ball. Spain have very good ball control and retention. Highly talented.
-
1-0 down at half time.
Midfield has been totally anonymous, toone and Stanway are not getting into this and are allowing Spain all the space in the world.
Hemp is impressive again and along with russo both are working thier socks off but it's all too far away from the Spanish goal.
Bronze lost her head a bit and went on run to nothing and lost the ball and Spain were cleaver enough to realise the space was left.
-

And we have 5 in midfield to Spains 3
-
Wonder if there’ll be changes, not long before James comes on for Toone, and I would give Kelly a run out but who for?
-
James straight on at HT maybe ?
-
Decision making in possession needs to improve - Bronze not making a pass, the cross where Toone was offside should have gone over the top to Daly at the far post.
We need to get at Spains defence because going forward they are excellent and deserve to be ahead so far.
-
Spain look fragile in defence. We need to get at them more.
I'd put England on for Rousseu and James on for Toone.
Rousseu can't hold the ball up, bouncing off her all the time and Toone been anonymous.
-
Russo and Daly off for James and Kelly..
Interesting but bold from Sarina. Formation change too..
-
Started off even worse.
-
Don't understand them subs. The weakness is in midfield but the 2 worst players in 1st half still on.
Daly must be fuming, she was top scorer in wsl and doesn't get a chance up top
-
They’ve got this far with some limited exceptions through grit and determination rather than brilliance. That’s perhaps their way through here. Just needs a scrambled goal from corner then holding out for penalties.
-
Justice served with the penalty saved. If VAR and the ref need almost 5 minutes to review something, it can't be that 'clear and obvious', especially when the referee was 5 yards away and staring at it in the first place
-
Regarding the subs, Kelly and James looking a threat.
Definite penalty but Earps keeps England in the match..
-
What on earth was the ref playing at? It was a nailed on 100pc stone wall penalty AND the ref was stood 2 yards away with absolutely perfect line of sight totally uninterrupted. Clueless.
-
Don’t mind the use of var but it should have been much quicker.
-
Getting nowt from this ref..
Definite yellow cards not being given.
-
Barring a potential last minute goal, England have been second best all game bar first 15 minutes. Spain deserved winners if they do hold out. Talented side of ballers.
-
A yellow that then is a red ref a joke, but we haven't been good enough
-
The ref is shocking, Spain by far the better team but should be down to 10
-
All over:.
No shame in that, Spain were the better side (mostly in the first half) so on balance the correct result.
Just frustrating some of the decisions.
Congrats to Spain.
-
Joke ofba decision by the ref, she was going to her pocket for a card until she realised that the player was on a yellow already, that would of made a difference last 15 mins.
Though I think England got the tactics wrong, hemp was England's most dangerous player in the 1st half and then the changes at half time meant that hemp was then less effective. Don't know how Stanway stayed on all game
-
I could go down the softer road because it's the ladies , " look how far we've come " and " we should be proud " etc etc .
Unfortunately ladies there's no soft landing because if you want the country to be emotionally invested and it's right to want that you also have to accept the other side of that .
Spain were better in every area , technically , tactically and fitness and we finished the game looking a real rag bag outfit .
Never turned up when it mattered the most .
-
I’m sorry but that last sentence is b*llocks. England did “turn up” but they weren’t at their best, and Spain were better. Sometimes it is just that simple.
What England need to do, is work out how to compete better with teams like Spain.
Runners up in the World Cup is a huge disappointment on the day, but in the long term it is still a great achievement.
-

Christ tyke, bit harsh. They will know they were outplayed but to say they didn't turn up is b*llocks. They gave it all, yes tactics probably weren't the best but Spain were good enough to counter anything England tried. There was no shame on England's part today.
-
Lot of top players missing from England squad. They’ve rode their luck quite a lot this tournament though and you can only run on fumes for so long. Did very well to get to the final. Better side clearly won.
-
And you only have to look at players like Lucy bronze and Mary earps, you can see they don't want the,
Look how far we have come and didn't we do well comments.
They pride themselves on being the best and they will beat themselves up about it. Lucy more than anyone, she will take that goal as her fault for going off on a individual run and then being out of position
-

That goal was totally her fault, she gestured to one of the England players to make the run before she ran into a dead end, the ball should have gone into the space regardless before the door shut
-
I wanted them to win. However delighted it’s not going to be wall to wall flag for waving coverage from virtue signallers. I hate it how they ram their woke agenda down our throats.
-
Good game. Fair result. We weren't quite sharp enough at crucial times. Early doors looked like Russo and Hemp would be the thorns in Spains defence but Russo looked off it today...maybe expelled alot of nervous energy.
The game was always likely to go the way it did as Spain have always been technically superior whilst we have our own more direct approach.
I didn't think we'd get passed the group stage but Weigman found a formation and a way to win games. They had to dig in at times so did exceptionally well to get the the final.
It was all about on the day and Spain played well and countered our power and pace really well whilst we squandered a few opportunities to hurt them enough. Weigman made bold changes to go and try and win the game but just wasn't our day.
-

She will know it was her fault and will more than likely blame herself for England's loss, you could see the way she played afterwards, very hyped up and howbshe was while the penalty was being taken, which helped the cause though.
Lucy is still the best rb in the womens game but it's hard when the midfield is non-existent. Once England get league Williamson back in there and Beth mead they will be a totally different side

What’s a ‘woke agenda’ ?
-
I wanted them to win - however thank goodness we’ve been spared the wall to wall virtue signaling & all the associated woke flag waving nonsense that inevitably accompanies it. The BBC have got its woke agenda & they love nothing more than ramming it down our throats whether we we want it or not.

Summed up in 3 words. "Not Good Enough"
-
Result apart, I've had a walk up to pub with my lad to watch game, it was nicely busy as were others all supporting. This was impossible 4 years back so just shows how it's building
-
Summed up in 3 words. "Not Good Enough"
Maybe 4 words would be more accurate: “not quite good enough”’.?
-
.... and maybe they "dodged a bullet" ***
Queen of Spain and daughter frew in for Final and ended up presenting Medals and World Cup ( like our Queen did in 66 )
However King Charles and his Heir Wills didn't go and Charlie Boy is King of Aus so he could have gone to simply honour the holding of WC in his patch
So did anyone spot who would have presented our Lionesses their Medals and Trophy had they won ? Yes there on Podium was our superb very own James Cleverley current Foreign Secretary. Wasn't bothered about his " carbon footprint was he "
For the record I really wanted us to win and though 66% of our Team (guestimate) would have no idea who he was I am sure they would happily accepted the Trophy
-
James Not very CLEVERly. He wouldn't have know which team was which.
-
What a thoroughly disappointing weekend of football. :(
Best team won. No complaints.
England have done well to reach the final in a tough, competitive tournament after their injury problems.
They've shown real grit and resilience as well as no little skill these past few weeks.
Spain were just too good for them on the day.
Gutted though.
-
Football is the national sport. At the senior level of the game, the sport is divided by gender. The women’s side of the senior game has just reached the pinnacle game of the global tournament. That’s a very high level of performance that deserved the recognition it got. Fairly poor in final mind, but that’s by the by.
-
Well done England. We're all proud of you, coming runners up with such a depleted squad.
Congratulations Spain. The best team on the day won.
-

You've just made that up and posted a link that proves you’ve made it up.
Not once in the article was"according to the left" mentioned.
It was the opinion of one pundit.
That post is as ridulous as one further up ranting at the "woke, virtue signaling BBC ramming it down our throats"
This thread is supposed to be in acknowledgement of the lionesses and how well they did at the world cup.
It's incredible sad how posters try to politicise and hijack it.
-
If we had won it would have been good cheap terrestrial TV, the fact we lost the suffering is good cheap terrestrial TV, if TV had not been there a bigger premiership game would have been played on the day of the final and broadcast on pay TV, and very few would have actually been bothered that the ladies were playing in Australia.
So next weekend it will be back to the real stuff and mainly because we lost that game will be last weeks fish and chip paper as far as the majority of supporters are concerned, that is reality.
Me I thought they did exceptionally well, projected their game forward to a wider audience, and I hope inspired more ladies footballers to play the game and clubs to be formed. Facilities already less in many areas than in my youth, in the Doncaster area I know of numerous sports fields no longer in existence will be the main thing that could hold the game back at grass roots many pitches already over played on and poor quality.

Phew! I never realised how all-encompassing The Left had become these days.

The team is too white unfortunately according to the left. Must try harder to diversity, because of course we'd do the same for track and field or basketball

Stop trying to be divisive.
Sky news yesterday, Wilfred Emmanuel-Jones MBE "too many blonde haired blue eyed white girls". You're correct, it's extremely divisive, disgusting and racist isn't it
Is that the same Wilfred Emmanuel Jones who was a Tory party candidate a few years back?
Phew! I never realised how all-encompassing The Left had become these days.
You're right, BST. He talked with a public school accent, and had a condescending manner.
I found his comments extremely racist and offensive, and the guy obviously knows nothing about the England women's football team. If he did, he'd be aware of past and present players like Alex Scott, Eni Aluko, Nikita Parris, Lauren James, and Jess Carter; all women who are not "blonde haired and blue eyed".
The guy's an absolute tw*t.

SS
I agree entirely that he sounds like an ignorant nasty t**t. But what on earth this had to do with The Left is anyone's guess.

He couldn't farm maggots on a piece of rotten meat.

Back on topic then.
The Lionesses have done themselves and the country proud and it is a shame that they came up a bit short yesterday.

He went to the same public school you did!!
He was brought up innner city Birmingham, went to a local secondary modern and left at 15 with no qualifications. He then joined the Army and got thrown out of there after only a few months. Everything he has gained in life he has worked for since then. Including his accent...
Actually quite a nice guy. I met him a couple of times when he was campaining in Chippenham. Never talked to him about footabll so no idea if he is a fan or not (but I bet he couldn't name any of the players for Chippenham Town).

That's because you think you know what I am writing. Rather than reading what I write.
I don't like racists full stop btw. Met a few of them along the way too - including some who said they weren't.
