Was there in 1985. Will be there this time.
Can’t believe it’s the thick end of 40 years ago.
I wonder if Animal fancies a run out

He didn’t play in 85, he was long gone by then

Missed 85 and it still wrangles me to this day!!!
-
I missed it too. Still pains me. I can’t even remember why. Post-6th form dolite poverty I expect.
Like all the gigs I didn’t go to in the 1980s and 1990s when I could have done. Nowadays when I think ‘should I go?’ I try hard to be there.
Other than this game how often have we played at Goodison in a proper match? Can’t be many.
-
Was 10 when went in 85 one of my 1st away games as started going in 83/84 season, deffo gave good account that day against one of best sides in Europe if English clubs wasn’t banned

Just 5 games played between the two at goodison. 3 at BV
-
It was a difficult time for everybody though, deep into a miners strike at the time.

THE best side in Europe. And Ian Smodin was the best player on the park that day. Although given that we were on a subterranean away end terrace and my eyes were at the level of the players' toenails, my judgement was limited.
-
I was at sea so missed it, if I remember rightly didn’t about 50 coaches go over.?
-
Packed in like sardines in a Tin can, regretted the 4 pints prior to the game as once in you were stuck where you was

Bloody hell, my mind playing tricks.
How weird is that; ive been hallucinating for years thinking he played.
I need a rest !

1985 with the nice friendly scousers …..not
-
I remember it clearly I was 13 and I was excited like you wouldn’t believe we went in my dad’s mates work van there was 4 of us and as we got to the outskirts of Liverpool we stopped at some traffic lights the bloke in from of got out of his car and came to us and said “are you going to Goodison?” We said “yes” he said “follow me then”. He drove us to Anfield we parked up and walked through the park to the ground - we bumped into Andy Gray & Adrian Heath who was on crutches.
A brilliant day out to visit the big boys. Can anyone recall our side as I seem to recall Steve Yates playing at left back but I could be mistaken.
-
Remember it well. I think we took about 9 or 10k fans. I was stood on a rail halfway up the away end which ran across the front of the second tier so had a great view. Also remember being pelted with coins from their fans to the left, lovely people those scousers.
-
Fantastic away day it was, despite losing. BST is spot on - Ian Snodin was the best player on the park. Had a great view in the stand behind the goal.
-
Spent most of the match dodging coins from the bitter blues fans and that fat copper with large cudgel Being on strike he went down like tonne of bricks
Never liked Everton ever since
Half the lads on the bus didn’t come back on the bus
Great day out thousands of us
Made you proud to come from Donny
-
Don’t know how we managed to take that many with the strike, my mother got me a ticket bless her
-
There was a lot of lads who went with not a lot on their pockets but managed to return nicely lubricated, thanks to the lads who where happy to share
My mam paid for the coach ticket bless her
-
I went in a coach arranged by a bloke from Rosso. Lots of cans of beer on the coach meant agony during the game as it was impossible to get to the toilets. Lots of coins and pieces of brick were launched at us by those loveable scousers which led to some quite nasty injuries and the police doing nothing about it. The walk back to our coach was lively and pretty scary.
Young Snodin was the best player on the pitch and would have been even better if he’d not been playing sweeper instead of his usual midfield. Andy Gray spent most of the game on his backside diving around too.

I was just going to mention Adrian Heath. He walked, on the crutches, round the pitch in front of us didn't he and got plenty of stick. I stupidly thought we might have a chance with him injured.
We were good but they were class in that second half.
As said from that low subterranean angle it looked like Trevor Steven Rose like a salmon to head that goal. Mind you, he was a good header of a ball.
I stayed over Friday and Saturday night at some in laws relatives in Bebbington and had the pleasure of getting the Ferry cross the Mersey before the game. Got the Metro back and later in the local WMC the locals were very complimentary about our performance.
A weekend never forgotten and couldn't imagine ever seeing so many Rovers fans in one place. Incredible and a bit scary at times.
-
I managed to get stood behind the goal on a barrier that ran across the back of the terrace and you could then lean back against the stand. It wasn't the best but was a lot less squashed than on the terrace and a much better view.
Coming out at the end was a bit frightening. I well recall the crush and having nowhere to move but it was a few years before Hillsborough and so you just sort of assumed you'd get out eventually.
Ridiculous the way away supports and fans in general were treated back then

Yes, I got on that girder too. Wasn't very wide but was better than being crushed. I must have had a strong bladder back then too.
I can't recall ever seeing any photos of our end which is a shame.

There was a photo on the back page of Doncaster Star,it was a section of our end with yours truly and a schoolmate smack in middle of photo,I remember seeing a cameraman positioning himself infront of our end and I put my arm up while singing with the outside chance of hoping it make us stand out if by chance we got to see the photo,It paid off,I must have timed it right, becuase it was the one chosen to put on back page.I still have the paper somewhere hidden away with other nostalgia and I will have a dig about and post it on here when I get around to it.I also have a birthday card from that era with many signatures of many of those players and others in the squad around that time,I posted it on an old thread on here several years ago, asking for posters if they could help identify some of the signatures.

Clip of the goals from this game is on Youtube if anyone's interested: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gY0f7mR5m3I

Some great stories on this thread. Before my time supporting rovers but I knew all about that match as a lot people spoke about it.

Sounds like a cracking photo. Look forward to seeing it!

I was there, but I was in seats above the terracing which as others have said the terraces looked jam packed and yes the walk back to the coaches was a bit hairy scary
-
I went on one of two mini buses Bob Nellis( trophies) took. We had the whole of the away end, bottom terrace, seating above plus about a 1/3 of the seating to the right of us.
I was say on the first row of seats above, the crush below was ridiculous along with allsorts lobbed from the home end.
What made matters worst was the local police force walking along the away terracing smashing the fingers of anyone that happened to be holding on to the fences with their long canes.

This is a link to the thread of the birthday card with Rovers players signatures, think it was 1981-82 a few years before Everton/Goodison cup game.

Going to have a look for the picture now.

I was in my early thirties and still playing so was unable to get to the game.
Looking forward to this one though.
-
I went with my brother. Unfortunately his boss (an Everton supporter) thought he would treat my brother & me & ‘surprised’ our kid with two tickets in the Everton Main Stand!
Of course, we wanted to be behind the goal with what turned out to be 10,000 Rovers supporters!
I have found the programme. It lists the Rovers team as Denis Peacock, Billy Russell, Steve Lister, Ian Snodin, Andy Kowalski, Glen Humphries, John Buckley, Colin Douglas, Dave Harle, Glynn Snodin & Aiden Butterworth but I’m sure Butterworth was injured for that game but as the programme doesn’t name subs I can’t for the life of me think who made up Rovers XI.
Bremner played Snodin in a defensive midfield role & he looked every bit the part every time he got the ball.
The Everton team (who went on to lose 1-0 in the final to Man Utd) was Neville Southall, Derek Mountfield (ex Liverpool), Kevin Ratcliffe (capt), Gary Stevens, Pat Van den Hawe, Paul Bracewell, Peter Reid, Kevin Sheedy, Trevor Steven, Andy Gray & Graeme Sharp. Howard Kendall was manager.
I remember as the names of the players were read out & Kowalski was announced, a scouser sat behind said “Wasn’t he the captain of that sub on ‘Voyage to the bottom of the Sea?”.
Aren’t they a witty bunch?!
We were 2-0 by half time courtesy of goals from Trevor Steven & I think his namesake Gary Stevens.
You feared the worst at every set piece with Gray & Sharp up front.
We made a good fist of it from what I remember without ever really threatening ‘Big Nev’.
-
Colin, I played against Andy Kowalski four weeks ago.
He is still in good shape and is still a very good player.
Walking Football of course but you never lose your love of the game.
He plays for Mansfield now.
-
I’m sure that we went on a Leon’s coach, I was also a striking miner at the time, a couple of older guys from our local club chipped in and paid for me to go.

Damn, just spent a few hours going through a fair bit of memorabilia in my storage boxes etc and the only piece I have not been able to find is the copy of the Doncaster Star I talk about, boy I have been perusing through some stuff, some of which I have forgot about, all the programs from the big games, including one of the JPT final that is autographed by all the players that was on the open day event in pre-season just after it,got several of the paper publications from the Dave Penney era like "The Rover" 2004 title winning edition, the Star 24 page colour tribute to Doncaster Rovers Champions!Free press Rovers Cardiff special cup final souvenir and a limited edition gold writing on cover of the final whistle/last match at belle vue plus all the usual others from the play off final,Stoke etc,BUT no Star edition just after the Everton game,It may turn up 1 day hopefully. It does exist and someone more savvy might be able to track it down.Do they still have a library of old editions of newspapers that the public can trace like they used to,on microfilm or something they used to do once upon a time?
-
I was 13 and went on the train with my Dad. I had never experienced a crowd and ground as big as that. Was lucky to be sat in the stand on the side. Our fans were packed in like sardines, I remember the pipe. I remember Dennis Peacock’s drop kicks bending out to a 5’7’’ Aiden Butterworth on the wing. The worst bit I remember was after the game getting charged by the police on horses in Stanley park. Great day out though.

That’s fantastic hound!
I’m moving to Bridlington in two weeks & have already made enquires as to whether or not they run such a club. I’ve had positive feedback & so.. ‘the dream goes on!’.

Felt like it. The M62 looked like an evacuation of Donny.
We stopped at the Birch services and you couldn't move for Donny fans.
That terrace that day...with less luck it could easily be Gwladys End, not Leppings Lane that went down in infamy. Most dangerous situation I've ever been in at a match by a million miles. Duggy had a shot early doors and there was a big surge. I'm not small but I got lifted clean off my feet, swept down and across the terrace and could barely breathe until the surge stopped.
Hillsborough was waiting to happen somewhere, sometime to some bunch of poor bas**rds.
-
I've said this many a time, that day at Everton and another similar experience at Hull, and to a lesser extent a cup match at Norwich were all terrifying looking back, but at the time you just went with it.
Hillsborough was waiting for someone, and the above 3 were just little old Donny, imagine the crushes involving fans of bigger clubs at away games, probably on a fortnightly basis.
-
Great set of reflections so far
My 4 stand outs from the day
The Coach I was on getting pelted with bricks going in towards Ground , less so on way out
The extreme crush behind the goal was as bad as people recall it here
A Rovers fan 20 ish , drunk , trying to get into a fight inside Ground , asking any Rovers fans to "hit me , come on hit me" .
Last but deffo not least the performance of one Ian Snodin best Rovers player by a mile that day
-

If they don’t then just up the road in Hornsea they do have good WF club.
If Brid have one then PM me and we could probably arrange to play a friendly match with you.

Did you know Rob Bennett hound? He died earlier this year and played walking football for some years. A Balby lad originally and I went right through infants to seniors with him.
-
The rake of the stand was such that you had to stand up to see the goal nearest to you.
I was almost crushed by a police horse coming out of Goodison park that day, and the copper steering it knew exactly what he was doing. I remember rolling round in a gap of about 6" between said horse and a wall. The final insult was when it slapped me across the gob with its tail as it moved on in front. well, at least I hope it was its tail.

Yes idler, I did know him. It was very sad to see his decline over a fairly short period of time.

Horses were nasty bstards on the picket line too

He never changed much over the years at all. Very rarely lost his temper. I was at Balby Infants, Balby Juniors and then Oswin Avenue with him. Always in the same class. I used to copy his maths homework. We played in the same Sunday league team as well until I did my knee in. Were you at his funeral? I came over for it and was talking to Tony Winstanley and another couple of WF lads after.

I wasn’t at the funeral because I was away at the time.
Tony is also a good pal.

I witnessed a copper on a horse and he guided the horse close to a wall and trapping a rovers fan, the copper gave a slight kick to the horse and it trapped the rovers fan and he fainted because it winded the guy and his mates had to take care of him.

I thought that might have been the same incident involving me, but after taking a few deep breaths to check if I was injured, I was OK. What happened to me was obviously not an isolated incident then.
I do remember thinking after it though that I was glad in a way that my team was a mere third-division club, and that I wasn't sure if I liked the idea of big-time football every week.
-
I know I've posted this before but thought it worth sharing again.
If you click on the photo it does show it the right way up! Weird!
-
Might be wrong but I'm not sure Andy Kowalski played in that game.
Wasn't it Jim Dobbin and David Harle in midfield?
