Which lovely Stainy lad kept Gordon Banks out of the starting eleven in the only time in his(Banks) career?
-
Ted Smethurst possibly.
-
Correct! Great call!
He was always considered to be too small.
He played non league to well into his 40s,and lived opposite the Catholic Church in Stainy.
-
Where did he keep Banks out ? Chesterfield ?
-
Yes.
I believe that was his only stint at league level, but had a long career at Kettering,Rugby,Scarborough and Goole amongst others
-
I believe he played for Denaby Utd,or Mexboro too.
-
Old guy who used to live opposite me was a big mate of Banks
-
Deffo Denaby because he signed with Chesterfield from there aged 21
Some good photos of him here at Kettering

He doesn't look that small does he?

Ted Smethurst possibly.
I always thought he was from Moorends JPT. Didn't he play against us in the cup at Scarborough 1972. I'll ask his nephew big Kev.
-
I knew him when he lived in Stainy, and thought he was born there.
He definitely played for Scarboro around that time.
He was good mates with Jeff Barmby,Nick's dad.

This is definitely trivia. I've had it on good authority (neighbour) that Ted was born at Park Road Moorends.
