We have FINALLY got some luck and managed to get 3 points, god knows how but we’ve got them. Going forward we have Rowe to come back from suspension plus about 20 injured players, Close got some minutes and a goal, Marsh got some minutes, we’re out the relegation zone. We’re on the up! (if Grant can give our central defenders a kick in to shape)

Well done Rovers, just going to enjoy the 3 points tonight. Will leave my thoughts on our defensive frailties for another day!! Onwards & upwards.
-
Senhor upright, Meneer crossbar, and Herr Otherpost our best defenders today.

Agreed. Was just thinking the same. Instead I will just ask the question.... when was the last time we were the worse team and came out with 3pts? Must be some time.

When was the last time we came out with 3 points at all? I can't remember.

Sutton. Possibly slightly second best but we controlled most of the second half.
Stockport. Early sending off affected the balance of the game but we were comfortably the better side.
Salford. Tight game. They looked like overwhelming us in the first 20 mins but we got a grip on the match and matched them after that.
Northampton. Best performance of the season and an excellent, comfortable win.
In none of those games did we concede anywhere near as many clear cut chances as today.

All true but the question was when was the last time we were the worst team but came away with three points.

v Colchester in April.

Just saying, I don't think we were clearly second best in any of those games. The late goals gave a feeling of luck being with us, but in none of the games, with the possible exception of 20 minutes against Salford and the first half against Sutton, were we unarguably second best.

We had a midfield that included Tomlin and Clayton so a degree of creativity and a degree of steel.
Things seemed to fall apart when Tomlin retired and Clayton decided he couldn’t be arsed.

I would argue strongly that we were 2nd best in the whole game against Sutton. A huge selection left early to beat the traffic it was that poor of a performance. I will admit to being one of them.
I was at a friends wedding for the Salford game so unable to comment.
As much as I believe we lack in all areas despite being much improved last season, you have to look and think that after next Saturday we will have already played all of the current top 5 and MK Dons who were 2nd when we played them and all strong favourites to be up there at the end of the season. There are points to be had in the coming weeks and that will tell whether or not we can be confident enough to look at the playoffs.
-
Forest Green created more chances in the match that is difficult to dispute but I thought we played the better football.
We just have to improve in both penalty areas. When we do that we will become a force in this league.
We need Bailey in midfield.
What we could do with is a John Doolan type player. Think Bailey can become that player but he is very inexperienced at league 2 level, this being his 1st season above National League level, but he definitely has potential to be that player imo.
-
I think he will go in to midfield now to make room for Nixon who is a very good player.
Can 3 at the back with wing backs work without Maxwell? I’m not sure it can.

Brentford at home in the Season we beat them with Copps Tap in ?
They battered us at home and were Miles better than us but we still won and in common with the last game of the Season there were Brentford "bodies" strewn all over Keep most pitch
They simply couldn't believe they'd lost
Everybody outside Ground had huge grins and were talking of highway robbery or daylight robbery
-
Get well soon !

I think they’re having the last laugh, sadly.
Eventually, very good performances will get you where you want to be.
-
Their owner has put over £100m into the club since that game. They've had the last laugh because of his £100m, being a London club, and the model he has developed for recruitment. We're not competing against that, even if everything had gone well for us since then. And clearly it hasn't.
-
I know hindsight is brilliant but we might have reached the promised land of The Premiership if we'd had forked out £1m for Billy Sharp that bit sooner.
We could have still been living off the profits of that now.
-
No no I think that you're living in the realms of phantasy there Jones.

We had the second best scorer in the Championship the year before we signed Sharp. Issue was, we didn't select him till halfway through the season. I'm struggling to see how having Sharp in the squad in 08/09 would have turned us into a promotion side.
After we did sign him, he missed 35% of the next 2.5 seasons with us through injury.

Assuming you mean your hero, Paul Heffernen, he scored 10 goals in 28 games for Rovers that season, with 3 assists. Heffs finished the season as the 24th top scorer in the Championship. The following season he scored 0 goals in 11 games.
My hero, Billy Sharp, scored 44 Goals for Rovers in 98 Championship games, with 16 assists. Sharp finished the season as the 9th top scorer. He also finished 9th top scorer the season after.
Now, I'm not suggesting Heffs should have made way for Sharp. I'm sure their playing together could have been prolific. But if, as you seem to insist it is either one or the other, then it had to be sharp every time.
My hero was better than yours!

They did play together in the odd game. Billy made Heffs look pedestrian and was more willing to chase things down. Heffs was a very good striker no doubt but had reached his peak and I think SO'D had come to that conclusion too.
Let's not forget we had Billy on loan before we signed him permanent. We wouldn't have got him any earlier. We could also possibly say, had we have kept hold of Jason Shackell and had Billy in the same team, we might have got a bit closer.
-
Did we have Heffs & Billy together? I can't recall that!
-
I deffo remember Billy zooming past Heffs to chase down a ball, when iHeffs was nearer to the action.
Not sure whether it was Billy's first appearance coming on as a sub but it showed he was on a different level of work rate.

Pretty sure I remember that too. Everyone was going mad from what I recall so probably his 1st game.
