A bit worrying where I live at the moment 3 floodline calls throughout the night, the River Don is approaching its record high and we are about 600 yards from the river, with the Stainforth Keadby Canal between us and the River, so far we are OK but the River is still rising and the banks have over topped on Fishlake side

Best of luck mate. I know I'm a broken record but this is a real time example of the consequences of f**king Austerity. One of the early victims of the cuts 13 years ago was flood defences.
They eventually found the money to protect the Don's banks in the middle of Sheffield. But that just increases the problem downstream and they've done nothing to protect you lot, despite repeated floods.

When I was a kid they used to dredge the Don, thats not happened in years, imagine how much more water the River could take if the River bed wasn’t silted up and the channel was deeper

Surly if the canal is between your property and the river then you should be ok, isn't the canal a self levelling water system?

The Canal joins up with the South Yorkshire Navigation which in turn joins the Don, at the other end it joins the Trent at Keadby, which I imagine is well high as well, theres nowhere for the water to go when both ends are in flood

Could be an interesting weekend for you then, i thought the flood defences in that area had been beefed up since 2008.Not sure if 2019 was to the same extent or as bad. I know Arksey Ings has had substantial alterations made to the flood defences and water run off since then.

I remember when they used to dredge down the Don gorge between Conisbrough, Sprotbrough, Hexthorpe and as far down as the North Bridge.
However I believe if you dredge upstream, it can lead to flooding down stream as a greater volume of water pushes downstream more quickly.
There are other reasons for dredging beyond flooding and I think the environment agency believe there are more effective ways to prevent flooding.

My Mam still says "once in a Sheffield flood" meaning something that hardly ever happens. Unfortunately, I think we're seeing a Sheffield flood become more common place.
I remember watching Country file last time we had a flood and they had experts recomending more tree cover up on the hills above Sheffield and more natural damning up there, things as simple as leaving fallen tree trunks to hold up the flow of water off the hills. The problem is landowners aren't particularly open to such suggestions.

We had a walk down to the iron bridge over the Don that links Sprotbrough to Balby.
When we got there the top path on the Sprotbrough side was completely under water, this path is quite high btw.
Within 5 minutes of being there the path emerged as the water was reseeding very quickly.
Not sure if that's a good or bad thing for you down stream in Stainforth?

It seems to have peaked in the last hour, we’re still dry, but there’s a lot of water gone over on the Fishlake side

Jubilee Bridge closed . Water looks to be a foot deep on the roadway.
I've been out towards Crowle and every dyke is full .
Saw River Torne in Auckley had floodedjust as you enter village as well

Only on a Saturday night after a Rovers defeat, on his way home from an expensive hour down Broxholme lane.

A good bit, probably half a mile either side of Fishlake Bridge
That’s good for the village then but surely if the rest of that side is as low as it was previously then the water will still overflow that side.

They did a new section of "flood defence" by The Boat Inn after its last 2 floods and the nearby properties
However it was a wall about a metre high but it hasn't stopped it flooding again now because (who would have guessed) it was high enough but the water went round the back and front of it and rumour has it The Boat Inn may never reopen (only a rumour)

Yes, I see the Boat Inn is flooded again. It is very difficult to stop the water, I used to walk the dogs on the river bank regularly there. When the river is high, I've seen water bubbling up and rising through the ground in the low area beside the Boat.
I hope it can open again, I always liked that building and it's one of the most historic places in Sprotbrough. I believe Walter Scott stayed there whilst he was writing Ivanhoe.

They screamed like stuck pigs in Sheffield when they got their feet wet in the Meadowhall area and all of the anti flood defences constructed meant that a huge funnel has been created that shoves Billions of Gallons of flood water down river, that’s what we get the issues in Doncaster, the money should have been spent on acquiring by CP several hundred acres of new fields created in Moss Fishlake area and making them Wetland nature reserves like the one at Adwick on Dearness, then you just open the gates and flood the land that for thousands of years was flooded.

The problems that this bunch of spivs in power slashed the budget for flood defences as part of Austerity.
Sheffield needed protecting. Doncaster needed protecting. This Govt chose to not provide enough money for both. Boneheaded stupidity, because the damage done costs more than the defences.

Yeah, all they needed to do was build a six foot high concrete wall on both sides of the river all the way from Sheffield to, well, the end of the river.

The real reason Meadowhall is given top priority for flood defence is the large business concerns that have a presence there in around the shopping centre. Its not a densley populated area down in the valley. Any local population that is there isn't wealthy.
When it comes to a choice between large retailers and houses down in the lower reaches of the Don, there's only going to be one winner.

The point is, it shouldn't have been a choice. The obsession with Austerity and a lack of interest in the North is what made it one.

Evacuating houses in Retford, it looks like they are expecting some heavy flooding there.
Edit: judging by the photos, it looks like they are fairly new houses that have been flooded in Retford. Doh!
Edit edit: modern houses flooded in Catcliffe too.
