Quite predictable with our injury list, but they haven't been doing a bad job recently! Rovers to win 2 - 0.

Looks like Sean Thornton’s back in the side tonight!

Poor start, they should have been ahead within 30 seconds and then we’re within a minute. Olowu arguably shouldn’t even be back in the team and didn’t appear to even challenge for the ball.

No coincidence that it’s when he comes back into the team. However, it was a shocking start. They should have scored in 30 seconds and we stay switched off when the ball comes back into the area.

Goal well taken by Smith but Anderson caught totally flat footed. Defensive frailties still there.

Same as always when we play against a massive stack of shit like Smith. We had it against Sunderland with that freak show Charlie Wyke. Same with Akinfenwa. Same with Smith. Simple balls in and we get bullied by the big lad. Anderson nowhere near that second goal. Ball watching.

So frustrating. Smith has one and one attribute only. We've seen it over the years and it is always exactly the same. Total one trick pony and we fall for it every single time. Only bright spot is he is 34 so hopefully will be f**king off into retirement before too long.

Too easy for Salford we need to score before half time and keep them out

I'm blaming westbrooke just for that choice of haircolour. Nothing good comes of a player dying their hair bleach blonde.

Joking aside

We really need to be better with our crosses. They haven't been good.

Looking a bit leggy

This is where we feel the lack of backup off the bench, very few options for GM to switch things round.

Post by: DonnyNoel on October 24, 2023, 08:35:03 pm
Could see this coming, and I mean that not in a critical way, just a bit of a realistic one. Threadbare squad against a team with a physical weapon. Frustrating as we'd probably beat them with a couple more bodies back.
Title: Re: Rovers Vs Salford
Post by: Chris Black come back on October 24, 2023, 08:36:39 pm
They don't have much about them but whenever the ball goes into our box we absolutely shit our pants worrying about Smith. Shitty kecks all round for Anderson and Olowu. Both of them but Anderson especially has done poorly against him.
Title: Re: Rovers Vs Salford
Post by: RoversInSpain on October 24, 2023, 08:37:53 pm
Nowt to do with injuries… our defending of balls into our box is an absolute shambles.

“Fans” some of them should be ashamed booing at half time. That is some of the best football I’ve seen from us in years!
Title: Re: Rovers Vs Salford
Post by: Chris Black come back on October 24, 2023, 08:40:44 pm
We've looked great with the ball but aside from two situations we haven't in any way harmed them with that possession. Smith while being a totally one dimensional player who probably types in his PIN code using his head, has been the difference. A half decent ball in to him and our lads shit their pants. Seen it so many times and never changes.

after the run we have had, booing is out of order, but to say we've had a great first half is stretching it...

Post by: monkeytennis on October 24, 2023, 08:41:47 pm
It’s a real shame as apart from those few silly errors which allowed them to score I think we are miles sharper than them. If we could only put chances away and score from corners we’d be thrashing them. Still I am happy the lads heads haven’t dropped despite conceding two. We’re still really going for it.

And who the hell boos them off when they’re busting a gut to claw it back? Some real big brains in here tonight, along with most of the ‘gerrit forward’ brigade it sounds like. SMH.

Rocket up the arse needed.
Too many players don't appear to be with it tonight.

Wouldn't know close was even playing.
Westbrooke, while he has got on the ball has been wasteful. When he beat the offside trap and Salford out their hands up he just rolled it into the centre.

Don't think 1 player is playing well.

But while squad is threadbare we will get games like this when we are playing Tuesday, Saturday then Tuesday, and players are playing 90 mins each time.

The ground that molly and nixon have been covering each game it's no wonder they don't look with it tonight.

They have had 2 shots on target and scored from both. 6 shots in total.

It's not like Smith wasn't a known quantity before the game. Mystery why we always fail against stacks of shit like him.

You’re never going to stop every cross, but you can man mark the big lad out of the game, Anderson has been found wanting.
Biggins is not in the game at all, but nearly scored a goal reminiscent of Woods at Forest early on. He goes off for me, senior on, and Bailey in midfield.

I am perhaps being a little unfair on Smith. I put him in the category of Wyke, Cook, Akinfenwa. Lower league players who are totally one dimensional but good with it. The lad from Sutton clearly won his place in a raffle.

Never looked like we were going to get anything here from first touch of ball but conceding 3 tonight has been shocking. There is no point complaining about it because it's never going to change but the defensive unit is pretty much consistently poor. Generally they always concede. Tonight has been embarrassing defensively.

We need to sort the defence out in the transfer window, we have looked ok in parts but soon as they attack they look like scoring everytime

At least it’s not a cross into his head this time. Jones has to do better there, though, it was a soft shot hat he just palmed straight out to Smith.

Shame as we’ve played pretty well at times tonight. Individual mistakes and a failure to do even the basics of defending have cost us. Again.

Title: Re: Rovers Vs Salford
Post by: Chris Black come back on October 24, 2023, 09:31:13 pm
Jones took it well with his right hand for the near post shot but palmed it straight on to Smith.

They have done a very good job on us. If it wasn't for our total inability to handle the most predictable player on the pitch, they will not have done much damage. We've huffed and puffed and had some good play and possession but never really looked like properly threatening. Not a disaster but certainly a night to forget. Hopefully next season Smith has retired or moved on. Can't stand seeing his face ever again here.
Title: Re: Rovers Vs Salford

We’ve been unlucky on goal but while ever we defend so poorly, we will struggle to climb this league, injuries or not.

Can't fault the effort & endeavour, let down defensively by the 2 centre halves. When a carthorse like Smith gets a hatrick, you know there are defensive frailties.
Title: Re: Rovers Vs Salford
Post by: Jersey Rover on October 24, 2023, 09:33:27 pm

Title: Re: Rovers Vs Salford
Post by: Sammy Chung was King on October 24, 2023, 09:36:27 pm
No need to totally dismantle the side. Every thing we’ve done wrong in this game we’ve been punished for. Having said that we seem to let a lot of goals in when Olowu comes into the side.

We haven’t faced anybody as good as Smith at what he does in our run of good results. Before the game concentration should have been, whatever we do, no crosses come into that box. If they do the goalkeeper has to be ready to take charge of the situation.
Title: Re: Rovers Vs Salford
Post by: RoversInSpain on October 24, 2023, 09:37:16 pm

We could play another 9 hours and we wouldn't be scoring. Some games are like that, which is fine. The issue is that we have then conceded 3 soft as shit goals, having been bullied by some massive knuckle dragger. The former is frustrating but the latter is embarrassing.

Not a lover of Wood, but I doubt very much he would have given Smith such an easy ride. Thought Nixon was excellent, also thought Biggins needs to up his game, poor tonight.

Post by: Chris Black come back on October 24, 2023, 09:52:06 pm
Must admit to having higher expectations of Wood being the big man. Saw quite a lot of him in early games getting bullied around. The whole unit is piss weak when it comes to playing the big lad.

Got to say, they kept the ball better than us, took their chances better than we did. For all the chances we had I don’t think their keeper was unduly troubled all night. Thought our goal was on side and should have been given. If it had I’m sure we’d have taken at least a point tonight.

Onwards and upwards on to Saturday

Take it and move on. We didn't play that badly, created lots that we didn't make the most of and fell in to their trap, though I thought their crosses were very good aswell whereas ours were not.

We won't win every game and something to learn from.

3 shots on target, 3 goals. We move on.
…and no effective goalkeeper - in contrast to which our opponents did have a goalkeeper who actually moved off his line, caught the ball and was an integral part of their defence.
