Title: Song covers
Post by: i_ateallthepies on November 19, 2023, 02:13:42 pm
I am one of those who finds most cover versions don't appeal as much to me as the original or at least the version I have become most accustomed to but just occasionally one pops up which is just outstanding.  Whitney Houston's cover of I Will Always Love You being one example, although for many years I hadn't known it was a cover until I heard Dolly Parton's original which itself blew me away with the simplicity of the arrangement and the emotion Dolly put into it - as good as it is, I still can't bring myself to say Whitney's version is the better one.

Yesterday I heard a cover of a song which must be up there as one of the most covered of all time (Unchained Melody) and 'til yesterday I haven't heard one that I could say comes close to the Righteous Brothers' version (itself a cover).  But take a listen to this and see what you think.

I've said before on a similar thread that the very best and very worst ever cover versions are both takes on the exquisite Just Like Heaven by The Cure.

The worst is the vomit inducing saccharine-bland Katie Melua version.

The best is this gem.

Dinosaur Jr would have been bigger than Nirvana if they'd not been so laid back they were almost catatonic. I've never heard a band combine grungy distortion, with utterly spellbinding bits of beauty like they did in their "look how f**king brill we are without even trying" style.

Jose Gonzalez - Heartbeats

The original is an average electro-pop song by a band called The Knife but the stunning acoustic cover is instantly recognisable.

I can't abide her stuff. But THIS!

One review of I'm With Her said "Now I know how Odysseus felt when he heard the Sirens." Amen to that. Just like something from another world.

I absolutely hate Whitney Houston's I Will Always Love You. It's fingernails down a blackboard for me. I have to say I don't like any of her other stuff either.

One bad cover version, not through bad singing but changing the mood of a song that really jars for me is The Carpenters awful version of Ticket To Ride, it completely sucks all the feeling out of it.

I was knocked out by this cover in 1973 when I went to see Ralph McTell and Prelude were the warm up act - I wasn't expecting to be blown away by one of my Neil Young favourites sung Acapella

Apparently, Paul Anka, who wrote it, and Frank Sinatra, both loved it.

Actually, I've had a brain freeze here.

THE most reprehensibly disgusting cover version ever was, of course, Tin Tin Out's f**king appalling version of The Sundays' Here's Where The Story Ends.

I saw him and his band in 1990 at the Jug(the old Toby Jug), Raven. Fantastic.

I went that night with my old mate, Pilk, who I'm sure you're well acquainted with.

Mike D’Abo also said on stage that he made loads of money writing a finger of fudge ditty that was written for and  used in the advert by Cadbury’s.

I don't believe that Bowie actually released a recording of it until after Motts single so was it a cover version?
As an aside saw them at the Rank back in the 70's think Paul Rodgers new band played, that was after he had left Free, was the band called Peace?
Just an after thoght didb't Bowie sing on the chorus of Motts single?

RR, yes, you're right. Bowie produced the MTH version and then recorded it himself. I still think the MTH version is better than Bowies though.

Not a fan of covers so when it's a song I like it's normally an instant dislike from me.  But this, I love, A cover of The Whole of the Moon by The Waterboys.

Hello Darkness by Disturbed
Also land of confusion!

I love that version of The Sound of Silence by Disturbed.

I'd probably been listening to MeatLoaf for 30 years before finding out that Original Sin, Good Girls Go To Heaven (Bad Girls Go Everywhere) and It Just Won't Quit were all originally performed by Pandora's Box. Learned at the same time that they also did "It's All Coming Back To Me Now" on that same album - it explained why I love the Celine Dion version so much (I never knew Jim Steinman wrote it".

There's a Ghost in My House - The Fall
Victoria - The Fall
Let's Stay Together - Tina Turner/BEF
Heart of Glass - The Associates/BEF
Gloomy Sunday - The Associates
Love Hangover - The Associates

The last two in particular. Gloomy Sunday is also known as The Hungarian Suicide Song. English version was most famously done by Billie Holliday. But The Associates' version knocks it into a cocked hat. Funky, driving synth beat over lyrics about suicide because your lover has died. Captures all the gothic gloom of the song without being mawkish. Nice!

And while we are talking about 1980s British bands doing covers that are miles better than Billie Holliday, Strange Fruit by UB40 is another one.
