A game we can surely go into under no pressure at all result wise, against a team that are more established as a unit, have more expensive players, and play every week at a standard we are way off, and generally score lot's of goals, have a chairman that gets more exposure on the radio, and a manager who knows us back to front and backroom staff who have also served time here so to speak.
Then the side show of the two managers who have managed both clubs, and whose careers have collided more than is healthy to be close buddies.
A lot at stake, probably more for us who could do with the prize money a cup run would bring and not to mention the extension of interest into the new year in a competition.
They are a good side score a lot of goals, but concede goals as well, tend to dominate the ball possession and have a lot of shots 22 in their game at Stevenage tonight and 75% possession so I think it is fair to say I suggest we try and play the game in their half and not expose our defence too much.
In fairness Fergie has them lying in fifth position in the league and most seasons seams to head them into at least a cup run in one of the competitions or playoffs and has had some glory nights on national TV and also dramatic falls from grace such as v the Wendies in the play offs when everybody else didn't do what he told them to do, well he said so, and I can just imagine him waiting to strut his stuff after taking down little ol Donny, a place not big enough for the likes of him.
It is interesting, we are better going head to head, because we can't or haven't at any stage been able to frustrate anyone for more than a few minutes in most games, they can be easy to play against, the trouble is we are generally easier to play against. so an entertaining game could be in prospect and we could well be on the end of an hammering, or a glory team for the day, they have players who score goals Mason Clark and Poku
We have Faal and Ironside and players like Molly who should offer more up front goal wise but could be the star of the show, it could be a very good game, or a walk over if we don't rise to the occasion and our defence and mid field don't get it together and improve before Saturday.
What do you think? can we please have our day in the sun? and I would love to get one over Fergie, would you? Lots to discuss, lots to be gained if we can sneak a win, please have your say.
-
It’s no secret that Ferguson and McCann really don’t like each other so that alone will add a bit of spice and neither will want to lose this match.
All the pressure though is on Peterborough as they are out and out favourites to win.
-
They have a very strong home record in League One. 5th in overall table yet 3rd in home form table despite playing a game less at home than most of the other top home form sides. Only Bolton have scored more at home and nobody has a better home defensive record. They are very strong at home.
-
Rovers are 6/1 to win on Saturday
-
I really want us to stuff these, I never warmed to Fergie and we really need the cup money to boost our coffers in January.
Hopefully sell a few more tickets off the back of last night's win.
Hopefully the santa hat idea has got around and we turn Posh red and white.

Myself and my mate have got our Santa hats but I wonder what percentage of our travelling fans will have read about this.

Needs to be shared on social media. Could rovers get on board to help spread the word?

It's being talked about on Facebook words getting round :santa:

The approach to the game Fergie takes is of interest to me, he never showed much interest in cups when he was the manager here and usually picked at least a couple of players on the fringe of the first team, then blamed them for not taking their chance when it went tits up.
I hope he hasn't changed and has a head like a bears arse after this game.

Best place to pick up a couple of cheap Santa hats? I’m pretty crap at shopping .

Looks like we've sold over 800 now. Can we get to 1k+? Would be a good turnout if so I think.

Someone said we had sold 900 in 1st 2 days and 1.100 up to last Friday. We were supposed to be getting another 400 on top of the original 1.300.
What is the real figure sold then. Looks like someone telling porkies.
Really cheesed off I am missing this game. Sneaky feeling we will sneak a win.
That’s 5-0 to them than.

We were allocated just over 1300, and there are around 430 left on the Rovers ticketing site.
That's the most reliable source of info I have. I'll defer to anyone who has first-hand knowledge of the sales figures though.
I think there was some confusion over the numbers initially as only two out of the four blocks were released for sale online at the start.
I don't think it has ever been confirmed that we would be offered another 400 though, that was conjecture.
CORRECTION/EDIT - we were actually allocated 1363 and there appears to be 430 left, so that would make it 930ish sold.

There’s a question mark over tickets sold. The initial Allocation was 1363. As of now there are 401 tickets left. However i noticed at the middle of last week that upper blocks an and lower a were not part of the initial ticket release. So have the club been given more over and above the initial allocation? Ground guide has away capacity at 1800. So rovers have either sold 962 or over 1400. Either way, there are tickets left . Some who have been to TO recently report the figure is around 900 sold. I did think this would be very well attended given 800 went to Wimbledon. But it is closer to xmas, freezing cold and train disruptions. Plus the realists will be expecting rovers to get hammered.
-
Even 1k is a good turnout

£2 in B&M for your ‘luxury’ Santa hat.
It has a very fetching white bobble on the end of a long string. Perfect for your annoying mate behind you to yank it off. (Nudga, I said YANK it off…)
I’ve got mine.

My take is we have the ability to go toe to toe with them football ability wise, whether we can match their athleticism and physicality in midfield remains to be seen.
To do so I think more of our players are going to have to play the game at the top end of their range than Peterborough's who hopefully turn up in a generous mood and wondering how much on their credit cards the wives and girl friends are spending on the gold card on Christmas presents in the smoke down the road, or where do we go tonight to celebrate a cup win, lots of teams have fallen on a sword thinking its easy.
In fairness anyone of our P v O competitors who put down win are looking for one against the head, or away with the fairies.

Only league games are included in the PvO mate.
More importantly though, have you shelled out yet for a Santa hat?

I have been in four different shops hound and have had the same reply in each one " big headed ones have to be to special order, especially those as big as your head, but we hope to get outsize in before Friday"
I might have to think about the supporters sat behind me.
-
The ones in Sainsburys have a short piece of elastic in the back of them so I guess they will be one size fits all.
-
Posh obv not expecting a bumper crowd for this. One whole end, the Moys end is closed for it.thats the new all Seater stand behind the goal that replaced the wonderful away terrace .
-
While it would be nice to grab a shock win and some more prize money, let's be honest, the league has to be the priority.
-
While it would be nice to grab a shock win and some more prize money, let's be honest, the league has to be the priority.
I’d take a cup Run to third or fourth round with the chance of a few big away days and take mid table obscurity as a trade off this season . The club would benefit from a good cup run . And we are well overdue one .
-
We reached the 5th round only a few seasons ago, when McCann was last here.
-
I'm not expecting to get much from this game to be honest. I think that teams go to Posh and defend hoping to catch them on the break so I just hope that we go out and attack them from the start and don't give them a moments peace. If we play with endeavour and without fear then we'll give them a good game.
Had some brilliant away days at Posh over the years. A minibus trip organised by some lads who worked at Pilkingtons in the 1980's stands out (wonder if Big Jim from Balby eventually made it home!!). So I hope that those of you going to the game have a great day out!
-
March 2010. Posh 1 rovers 2. Gareth Roberts scoring a blinder from the edge of the box and then John Oster popping in the winner in the 90th minute in front of the jubilant rovers faithful in that wonderful away terrace is a fond memory.
-
One thing for sure ,Fergie won't want to lose this game,
-
All the reasons as to why we have no chance of victory in the excellent opening post do not take account of the McCann influence on our group of players.
-
Graingrover, my personal feeling about any football game is "it is never won until it is lost" and played all my sport that way, of course we have a good chance if we play well, but it would be our second win on the trot, we are not good at that, but the game is there to play for, and we start the game 0-0, 11 v11 and I live in hope, am going to the game, and am looking forward to it.
I just hope we give our best, the rest is in the hands of God, I wouldn't back against us even though Peterborough are favourites, we are capable of getting a result in my mind.
Probably the only result in this game I would not back is 0-0, now that's done it.
-
The ref is the same one that sent GM to the stands at Tranmere. What’s the betting it will happen again ?
-
It is a bit odd that they conceded 6 goals against Salford in the two games. Their league average is just over 1! They did seem to field a weakened team in the first away tie, but they put out what looked like a full-strength team in the replay and nearly lost. What is more, the stats suggest two fairly even contests.
Maybe this is not grounds for much hope, but clearly a similalry aggressive approach will be the best hope of a rematch or less likely, a win.
-
I have got a good feeling about this- I think we play a lot better when the pressure is off and they might just struggle to be up for it. Remember what Kings Lynn did to us.
-
Good news from selby that we start the game at 0-0 and 11 players versus 11.
I’m feeling more confident now.
-
Good luck to all you guys making the journey on Saturday. All teams have a chance in cup ties, and it would be nice to go on a cup run and make some money.
However, I fail to see how some fans would take a mid-table league finish as a trade-off for a good cup run. If we finish no better than mid-table, ST sales next summer will take a hit, and if Terry doesn't come up with more funding, it could be difficult for GM to go for a promotion push next season.
We all know GM's a good manager, but he's not a miracle worker, and he won't improve this squad without significant funding.

Current squad doesn’t need major surgery SS imo.
Probably 3 players required in the summer, depending on whether we can sign Nixon and Faal. The latter is unlikely unless we can get him on loan again.
Need a really decent Keeper, centre back and a ball winning midfielder.
If we can get Nixon permanent & Miller is 100% fit then imo we have a squad that GM will improve sufficiently this season to get them challenging and achieving top 3 next season.

Too many if’s and but’s in that piece, Camps!

It’s a tough ask for us tomorrow but outwitting Ferguson tactically is like playing the cup game with a blind chimp. He’s not the most aware is he? Looking at his squad mind, it is a very decent set of players.

Losing is not an option for Fergie and MacAnthony. They should have this in the bag, just like v Owls. What could go wrong?
I just hope our fans are not too premature in giving it large if the upset is on.

Mid table finish is fully expected, and all things considered not too bad. Rebuild season. January will be telling in who gm brings in. But one or two players don’t make a team. Unless we are lucky enough to acquire a Rob Jones and a Billy Sharp. (Type players)

I am really fearing the worst with our poor away form and their strong home form. Really hope though I’m wrong and we get a result. Come on rovers!!

Once upon a time we could compete with the likes of Posh, reality is a real ball kicker.
-
2-1, hit the post & had a goal (which apparently was a goal) disallowed, think we competed well enough.
-
Not really Donnyjim! We were just as good as them today and should have been at least level as the disallowed goal was not offside according to the commentator.
Yes Jones made some good saves but we also hit the post twice, and missed at least one sitter.
-
Are you Jim McDonald?

-

I think you'll find we have competed with them. We may have lost but maybe the gap the league positions between the two teams isn't as big as what it suggests.
-
We struggled for parts of that game and were really hanging in there at times. For last 20 minutes it was all us though. Definitely some positives to take from today.
-
I thought we were outclassed at times, especially out wide and we missed a bit of finesse in midfield, but we were also very threatening. V cold but decent performance and v enjoyable game
-
This is our 13th away game this season in all competitions. Over half of them (7) we have lost by a single goal. Only at Newport (4-0) and AFC Wimbledon (2-0) have we lost by more than a single goal.

Exactly. 4 wins from 13; 9 defeats.
We won't achieve anything with away form like that.

They looked dynamic when they attacked, we know we don’t have the best defensive unit about, but overall I thought we played the better, we rode our luck, jones pulled off some good saves, I’d say we looked better in attack but I think we controlled the majority of the play most of the game.
Walked away disappointed to lose but happy we give it a good go, no shame in that defeat

-
Just got back from a very chilly London Road. I thought overall rovers gave a pretty decent account of themselves. Posh were clearly a very confident and assured side that were happy to play it around from the back with some style on occasion. They could have had 3, 4 or maybe 5 on an other day. Jones made a handful of well needed blocks and saves. If they don’t secure a playoff slot at least I’d be surprised.
Rovers were very unlucky not to go level early in the first half but the ball was struck straight at their keeper from a very good cross.
I thought their no10 may have been offside for their first, but I suspect he wasn’t interfering with play. I’d like to see the replay.
I’d like to see rovers disallowed goal again too, which I thought was very, very close. Hitting the post late on for what have been 2-2 was a bit of a kick in the balls. My overarching feeling at the end was that rovers only seemed to get some fire in their belly when they got it back to 2-1. Which is a bit of a shame, but that’s football I suppose.
Respect to the travelling faithful that made some noise even after going a goal down so early. And continued to do so throughout the game. Seems like there was more than 1000 there.

First! Autocorrect error.

Wonder how Mo is? I thought he over egged the tackle on their keeper as an attempt to get a pen. But he was clearly struggling afterwards hence him being subbed when he eventually took to the floor and motioned to the bench. Let’s hope it’s nothing too serious.
-
Just back - gave everything and very little between the teams. The offside goal wasn’t.

I thought the same although quickly turned in to him maybe not wanting to get sent off for dangerous play. Then when he finally stood up he did look genuinely troubled. Those extra few minutes before he went down again could have caused some damage. Majestic header for his goal.

I lost track of what the defensive set up was. I think it was back three with Olowu left, Anderson centre and then Bailey right. Although I swear Bailey was playing central midfield in first half. Either way Olowu and Anderson got taken apart at times in first half. Cut right through.

Mason -Clark who got their winner was signed for posh by Mcann. Gotta love football.

It’s you not understanding how the law is applied, how many times have you seen a forward at free kicks standing 3 or 4 yards offside only to be back onside when someone else has touched the ball?

That's stretching it to call that second phase plus it's debatable whether Mo gets back onside as it's very close call when Joe flicks it. To the naked eye, in real time you can understand why the Linsman flags offside. Even VAR would struggle with that one I think.
-
Well to me we set a new standard today and now need to keep it up.
That was a great cup tie to watch, had everything but we just could not get it over the line just a little more class taking the plaudits.
I can accept that sort of effort, and we are a young side that visibly is improving, keep it up and it will come.

It's not a "second phase" though is it? I thought in a situation like that, it's all part of the same move
Hands up if it's me not understanding how on earth the law is applied these days.
It’s you not understanding how the law is applied, how many times have you seen a forward at free kicks standing 3 or 4 yards offside only to be back onside when someone else has touched the ball?
Ok. Just read Law 11. It's about as clear as mud, but interpreting what it says strictly (or more accurately, what it DOESN'T say) it appears that only the situation as at the very last touch from a teammate counts. It doesn't ACTUALLY say that explicitly, which would help, but I can't interpret it any other way.
In which case I was wrong and the goal should have stood.
It's a bloody stupid way to apply what in essence is a very simple concept though. Offside is about penalising a striker for trying to gain an unfair advantage by their position. Faal was clearly doing that from the free kick and if he's not going to be penalised for taking up that offside position, it makes defensive decision making impossible. I can't understand how they have made such a simple concept so messy.
-
It certainly was an excellent set piece though. More of that, please.

Agreed Filo, Faal is played on by their number five after Ironsides flick on.
No doubt in my mind that the goal should have stood.
The Twitter clip further back in the thread shows it clearly.
Attackers do this all the time under the laws as they stand and as you say, it gives them an advantage if the ball is subsequently touched on.

After rovers got their goal
They became much more direct. Beggars belief why they could do this all game .

Highlights.
Didn’t show the disallowed goal. There’s a thing.
See reply number 82, there is a Twitter clip of it.
No way should the goal have been ruled out.

Lino also miles behind play and in no position to call offside
-
At the time I thought it was a late flag and my first thought was it was a good goal.

Looks like Mo's off from the free kick, not necessarily the flick on.
He's a good 18 inches offside when the free kick is taken. It's a bit embarrassing to have McCann going on about it being a bad mistake by the linesman.
So not actually embarrassing for Grant to be going on about it then?
It was a goal. We were denied by an incorrect decision. We were robbed of a result which we richly deserved.
-
Crikey. It certainly ain't clear and as for Biltcliffe's comments, deary me.
Even if we're saying Mo is played on when Joe flicks it, he's probably on (level) for a tenth of a second and from the linesmans view, the defenders virtually invisible (and yes, because the lino is not directly line), all he can see is Mo, so it's understandable why lino thinks Mo never got back onside.
I must admit, checking the laws it ain't clear as Mo is always active in the move, and he never gets back behind the ball.
To coin a phrase, it ain't clear and it ain't that obvious.
Wish it had have counted mind. Very unlucky.

Jones- awesome today. No fault at any goals.some might disagree especially first one. There forward nearly headed the ball which he didn’t hence why it went in. Similar to closes goal at FGR. Made some great saves
Nixon- not on it today. Should have gone of at half time
Anderson- caught out a lot in first half. Seemed to get better second half
Olowu- torrid time today. The right hand side of there team were fast and good. Kept going so credit
Bailey- changed position to many times in first half. Better in defence in my opinion
Close- difficult game. Missed Westbrooke
Broadbent- went missing a bit in first half. Great ball to Faal. More involved second half
Molyneux- fantastic as always. Lacked support at times
Maxwell- same as Molyneux
Faal- early miss seem to effect him. Lacked the enthusiasm quite a lot. Good goal but that’s all really
Ironside- tried but not a lot of joy. Fouled a lot as usual and as usual nothing from ref
Rowe- put the effort in and harassed
Hurst- done well, shame he it the post
Only my view. Open game. Credit that they kept going. Don’t mind losing when they try. Just at times things went wrong
The fans- superb today a part from a few idiots singing we always lose and three guys trying to pick on young fans of our own. Then one of the idiot of the three threw a bottle down the stand at our own fans
The ref. Say no more

Quite a good summary there Spilsby, but I have to say that although Faal wasn’t at his best he was still good and probably our best goal threat.
-
Like I said it was my view and I listen to others. Thank you for your respect for my post

Need to find a way to get Hurst, Molly, Ironside and Faal in the starting line up. We’re not great at defending so may as well embrace it and just go for it.

Very commendable BST, and likewise, I like to think that I would hold my hands up if ever I was
wr, wro, not right also.

Tom stood there like a pudding for their second goal.
-
I don’t understand the rules either! Mo was offside when the ball was played in, and he/we gained an advantage from that position.
I don’t know how you can defend against this type of “goal”
Either way we played very well, and Posh struggled to contain us at times. They were better than us for 30 mins in the first half, then we took control of the game.

I agree that it is hard to defend that type of situation but it happens all the time.
The Palace second goal inthe fifth round when GM was last here came from a similar situation.

spot on.
Hurst is our x factor player and needs to play behind the front two.
McCann needs to have some faith in him.
He'd offer more than Biggins, Broadbent and Rowe who have all been tried there.

Agree but it looks like he's being eased back in rather than a lack of faith.
With games coming thick and fast, we're going to need them all.

Mo wasn’t offside when the ball came in,he was in a offside position but because he doesn’t really challenge for for ball he isn’t classed as active(yes being so close by sum would argue)then when joe flicks on he is onside, that is why now you see assistants put their flags up later.irritates me sim times especially when you can see clearly there is only one man going for the ball and they wait till he touches it.you also only have to look where the asistant is and keeper take the free kick from inside the six yard box and not on the penalty spot area where Faal was initially

It’s like accusing your neighbour of letting his dog s**t on your lawn only to realise later that it was actually cat s**t.
The decent thing to do would be to apologise to your neighbour for not inspecting the s**t more closely.
Likewise apologies to Grant for saying he was embarrassing in insisting the goal was good when you had wrongly identified it as dog s**t.
Understand?

Another aspect I'd not considered, if you look at Ironsides reaction, he berates Faal presumably because if Mo doesn't touch it, it's going in anyway. Goalkeeper was well beaten.
-
I wondered afterwards whether Ironsides header might have gone in but from the Twitter clip it seems to me that it would not have done.
Either way, Faal was onside when Ironside heads the ball so the goal should have counted.

Anyone remember the charltongoal at keepmoat in playoffs or was it palace in cup was stood a good distance in aoffside position but when played from his teammate he was then onside

Peterborough draw Leeds at home

Been mentioned earlier. I think it was Palace. Similar but once again it's gone against us.

don't think it works out that we would have got the same draw, arent numbers allocated alphabetically?

For those entering for the first time I've prem teams but not for us. Glad we didn't get through. Getting battered by Leeds at home and a home end of the cretins

correct, so we would not have drawn Leeds.
-
Incorrect we would have got Leeds. The teams through from round 2 are given a number based on what match number they were in round 2.

Incorrect. We would have been playing Leeds.

Butterfly Effect suggests we would not have got Leeds.
-
Hopefully Westbrooke’s thigh injury is just a niggle rather than a strain. We have struggled without him this season.
Harrogate, Newport, MK first half, Barrow (after McCann changes), Colchester (until him and Moly came on) to name some examples.
Close matches his ability on the ball but doesn’t have his energy. The others are then a big drop off in terms of looking after the ball.

I posted my comment because I feel it is notable how some contributors (like you) seem ready to jump in and make critical and negative comments before taking time to consider things.
Whereas other contributors (like me) will, in this instance for example, listen to the views of our manager and respect them, giving him the benefit of any doubt because I believe he is an honest and reasonable guy.
So I felt the need to point out that your opinion that Grant was embarrassing was incorrect and unfair.
Does that explain?
-
Pancho
I'd already held up my hand and said I got that call wrong. That's why I don't understand your need to wade in and tell me I was wrong.

BST, as I and others have said, you could have withdrawn your comment.
You have demanded that from others when you think you have been maligned.

I’ve been to hundreds of football matches, home and away.
But something happened at Peterborough that was, to me, very special.
About halfway through the second half, with the freezing fog descending and the London Rd home crowd somewhat reminiscent of a library, the rovers faithful piped up with a rendition of the. “watching super donny, putting on a show” song.
It was a really special moment. It felt like every one of the 1011 were in full voice, in unison. Very loud and very proud.
It must have sounded pretty good to the home crowd.
Hairs on back of neck neck stuff.
It’s moments like that that remind me of why we follow our team. Freezing cold. Under dogs, getting beat away from home. But it doesn’t matter. We stand together. As one. Win lose or draw.
-
It was good wasn’t it NR.
-
Was very loud through much of game. The stand helped. Low roof.
-
Same when we went a goal down. This season has given me the football buzz back that's been missing for a few years now.

Well said - very reminiscent of that December Friday night match v Swansea , think it was 03-04 season when the snow started falling really heavily - we were winning and the pop side launched into "Rovers till I die" - it was so bloody cold on Saturday I thought I was about to !!
-
I swear the stand was shaking on Saturday well done everyone
