Title: Frost in Peterborough
Post by: Poshrover on December 01, 2023, 10:19:56 am
Minus 3 tonight and the Family Stand shades the pitch frim the sun. Last season they called off a match at 12 noon on the Saturday after saying the game would definitely go ahead on the Friday. Please all check before leaving home that the game is happening.

It’s happened many times before of course but this whole business of calling games off a few hrs before kick off has to stop.
I remember the Cheltenham cup game a few seasons ago suffering the same. I ended up stopping off at cov to watch them play kiddy as we were half way to Gloucestershire by the time the game was called off.
The forecast is known for today and tomorrow. With temps not getting much above zero today, and forecast colder tomorrow, if the London road pitch is unplayable at 3pm this afternoon, then it will be unplayable tomorrow at 3. It’s that simple.
The system of it boiling down to just the ref also is in need of review. There is much more at stake than just a game of footy. In adverse weather people travelling up and down the country, at their expense really should be at the forefront of the decision making process.  Clubs should be much more involved in this imo.
For the ref to trudge out into the pitch at 10am tomorrow is plain daft when some supporters will already be on their way.

a game in March was called off at London rd under similar weather conditions, albeit slightly colder.  the ref stated the covers there only go down to -3. And the family stand does shade the pitch all day. Here is the refs interview from March.

My point exactly. If non league can sort this , why is it so difficult for league clubs not to make this early call?

However cold it is tomorrow, I refuse to believe that any football match will be colder than Roker Park when we played there on New Years Day in the mid 80's. Absolutely biting winds coming off of the sea, half bricks being thrown at us and a defeat did not make for a good day out.

They should know already. It was freezing there last night and it will be freezing or below until the game is over. If it is frozen now then it isn't going to unfreeze.

-2.5 in Frampton mate and rapidly descending freezing fog.  Although oddly enough I reckon my lawn would take a stud. Crunchy grass but a little softer underneath.

With the weather being a concern, especially for those travelling, you'd think they'd post a status update, rather than let folk assume no news is good news.

It better be on, we are a third of the way from Cornwall . Odd that no news to say the game id definitely on, but assuming that is good news rather than bad.

They have had lamps out on the pitch during the last few nights to make sure the game is on. I set up at Peterborough parkrun this morning and the soil was not as hard as concrete when putting up the finished tunnel. It was quite soft.

Seems Alfreton and the ref were ready to play but the Walsall players didn't fancy it.

"Somebody just said to (Alfreton manager) Billy Heath "Are you happy Bill?", and that was after the protective sheets had come off the pitch, and he said "Yeah, we’re happy but they don’t want to play".

Decision on whether the game goes ahead can be down to one or other of the teams?  Surely not right.  I understand the difficulty around liability and it would take balls to insist that the game be played but surely there has to be penalties for the club that brought this about at such a late stage.

Maybe. This is what BBC reported at 12:30

"We can report that despite the freezing temperatures in Derbyshire overnight, the pitch at North Street has been passed fit to play - for now.

Here we see the team of officials having a very pensive look at the surface!

The players are warming up on the pitch, but we have word that the game is not 100% certain to begin.

With no undersoil heating, it has been quite an effort to make sure the pitch has been looked after ahead of the club's big day"

Hope those covers are off at London Road now.

I think they were UV lamps, Hound to promote grass growth in the centre of goal.  Don't think they do anything to counter the effect of frost.
