It should surprise no-one that 2023 is one of our worst calendar years ever in our football league and/or conference years. Our record was W13 D7 L27, 46 points from 47 games at three per win, definitely relegation form.
I will disregard 1903, 1904 and 1905 which each all contained only half a league season of very poor success levels (we were not re-elected in 1902-03 and 1904-05, and we did not play league football in 1903-04.
If we compare all other calendar years over those 96 seasons at 2 points per win, the 0.702 ppg is our 10th worst ever. Not surprisingly 1998 with 0.500 is our all-time worst (relegated from FL, and a bad start to our first Conference season). The only two recent years that are worse are 2011 at 0.592 (bad end to 2011 in Championship, followed by and start to relegation season 2011-12) and 2021 at 0.680 (bad end to the season Moore left us and Butler took over followed by bad start to relegation under Wellens/McSheffrey the following season). The other worse years are 1936, 1958, 1991, 1997, 1967 and 1962. The only year not to include a relegation or re-election season was 1991, and that was only because there was no relegation in 1991-92.
At three points per win it is slightly ‘better’ since we have a relatively high number of wins and relatively few draws. It is still our 16th worst ever.
That is either a year so bad you would expect only once in 10 or 6 years depending on which ppg. And we do not have an overall record of being a regularly successful club.

Just when I was starting to feel a bit better.
Well, wishing us all a happier new year!

The past is past DBR. IMHO there are encouraging signs with the board and manager which give reasons to be positive about the future :scarf:
Happy New Year to one and all

If the club sticks with GM and backs him 2024 will be a lot better.

We started pre season with a bit of optimism, shame the way it’s gone so far. Sick of the losing mentality it sucks the life out of clubs.

I agree with you, Sammy.
I thought it was courageous of the board to dismiss Danny Schofield as it can’t be easy sacking a manager and having to pay them off. And I was impressed that the board signed a manager with the pedigree of Grant McCann. Not only that, it was early season so McCann had plenty of time to build his own team and get them up to speed before the start of the season.
Ok, I am no expert on every player in the EFL but I thought the signing sounded good enough (for league two anyway), and I put my faith in McCann.
Ian Lawlor from Dundee
Richard Wood from Rotherham United
Jamie Sterry from Hartlepool
George Broadbent from Sheffield United
Jack Senior from Halifax Town
Joe Ironside from Cambridge United
Owen Bailey from Gateshead
Tyler Roberts from Wolves (loan)
Deji Sotona from Burnley
Tom Nixon from Hull City (loan)
Modou Faal from West Brom (loan)
Louie Marsh from Sheffield United (loan)
I confess my expectations were that Rovers would be in the top 7 all season and vying for the top 3 with real conviction. So it has been very hard to stomach the performance we have seen, and it doesn’t matter the reasons. Without some amazing signings in the next month I can only imagine fans will experience another poor season with some hope that things might be better next year. But a club cannot motivate fans with endless expectations that things might come right one day.
That's just my own opinion right now. I know it is my own fault for expecting too much.
