Title: Joe Ironside.
Post by: Colin C No.3 on January 01, 2024, 04:02:06 pm
“Joe Ironside won’t score more than 10 goals from open play”.

Now I just can’t recall the poster who nailed that one to the door? But I’m sure he’ll ‘man up’ & hold his hands up before I recall who it was.

Just scored his 15th goal of the season with another 45 minutes to play against MKD.

Joe Ironside will score 20+ goals this season.

He hasn’t scored 10 has he? Given a bonus gift today as well.

Let’s get things clear, I hope he score a goal a game between now and the end of his contract. He obviously won’t, 21 games left this season, he’s likely to score (open play) at a rate of about 1 in 4.

You’d have to put 5 or 6 more open play goals in as favourite. Not impossible he gets 3 or 4.

I remember a someone early on calling him a “limited footballer”.

That headed assist for Moly was immaculate.

Magnificent bas**rd and tough as old boots.

Needs a chant ASAP.

Let’s get things clear.

When you come out with a statement like you did Gaz Laz, you deserve to be pulled up for it when you’ve clearly made a bit of a fool of yourself.

Now, if I had made such a ridiculous statement so early in the season I like to think that instead of coming on the forum & saying he was gifted a goal today, or ‘hiding’ behind your own stats (which make you look even more ridiculous by the way) to show you won’t be way off the mark come the end of the season then ‘sugar coat’ it by saying you “hope he scores a goal a game until the end of the season…”, I would like to think I would have the good grace to hold my hands up.

You’re a tad too full of yourself fella.

Who cares whether he scores from so called open play or other situations.?

A goal is a goal isn’t it? Any player who gets 15+ goals a season is going to have a variety of goal “types”..

Apparently ‘some people’ don’t count penalties towards a players goal stats, only goals from open play are worthwhile counting to them.

It must be galling for them when he’s credited a goal from a deflection!

I for one didn’t really see more than a one paced striker, with the ability to hold it up and look busy during the pre season games, and probably not get many goals as he didn’t look a goal scorer at all.

I said I’d give him until new year to prove me wrong, and I’m happy to slice off some humble pie. He’s proven to be one of the best players for us, albeit a pretty crap season so far, so from me: We’ll done Joe

Fair enough mate.

There’s strikers in this division who are only there to win headers and link play, some to only run and chase and some just to be on the end of chances. Joe can do all of that.

No, he’s not going to skin 2 or 3 players or regularly score 20+, but there’s a lot that goes in to centre forward play. And sometimes those like Joe come under scrutiny if they aren’t prolific or exciting, despite the important work they do.

Churlish attitude to a player who has done everything we've asked of him and more this season, the fact he's performed the role he has all season in some cases with very little support tell you everything we need to know about him and his work ethic.

Fantastic pro who's been a credit to himself and the club, long may that continue.

Can't knock him. 14 goals in a supposedly rubbish team is impressive and for a striker who isn't all about scoring goals that's a good return.

Fancy Molyneux to get some more goals now in this new system and beat his previous Hartlepool total of 8 (currently on 2).

When Ironside drops deep Luke is basically a striker

Doubt this is anything serious, it's probably covering their backs should Mullin move on and considering anything who remotely looks like a decent centre forward with options 1, 2, 3 & 4 etc. JCH and others allegedly more likely targets.

Silly season well underway.

The Cambridge United forum has a thread on 'why is Joe's hand always bandaged up' from Jan 22 so it must be either preventative and / or superstitious. Karim Benzema seemed to have a bandage on for about ten years!

Joe can bandage all the bits he wants if he keeps on being the warrior that he is! My vote for signing of the season too (although Bailey definitely on his heels).

If it was the summer transfer window and we had time to replace him I'd say go for it. He's been good for us but at 29/30 if someone like Wrexham wants to pay silly money it would be good business. But given we still need points on the board to be sure of staying in the league, and a lack of other options up front, tell them to do one.
Title: Re: Joe Ironside.
Post by: Reg of the Rovers on January 03, 2024, 11:00:31 am
Got to keep Joe - can't replace him with the money we'd get. With him we've good top half potential, without him we'll be scrapping at the bottom for sure.

Wrexham linked to about ten strikers already, and have Mullen plus Fletcher and Palmer who have similar attributes to Joe. Hoping this is the usual rumour mill rhubarb.
Title: Re: Joe Ironside.
Post by: Thorney on January 03, 2024, 11:08:25 am
This rumour surely is nonesense, bit like the miller one at the start of the season.

It would be suicidal of the board and GM to accept and allow joe to go to a fellow league 2 side at this stage of a season. The last 2 performances have started to get some fans back onside. If joe was to leave and we go 2 games with defeat and not scoring then the atmosphere will really turn toxic.

Some might say we got him on a free and then wrexham have given us stupid money so its a good buisness deal.
Its not good for buisness when it affects the actual thing we are here to see and that is results on the green stuff

We seriously need to start creating more chances.

Playing a target man completely isolated from the rest of the team isn’t going to get the goals to keep us up.

Sutton the worst defence in the league and nothing was created.

I hope the approach from McCann is different for the upcoming games.

If somehow he could be coached to stop giving so many fouls away and winning them instead, then he will be some player. And in turn puts us up field on the front foot instead of what we have at the moment, killed momentum.

I think you have some weird belief that I don’t want us to win or certain players to do well. Couldn’t be further from the truth. I can just compartmentalise what I think will happen and what I want to happen. I genuinely hope Ironside scores 10 between now and May. I just don’t think it will happen. I’ll cheer every goal he scores as much as the next man.
