Signed on loan from Wrexham
-
We nearly signed him in the summer, or maybe the summer before. They all blend into haze in recent times.
-
Stats are p!ss poor.
-
Anyone know much about him? Not Wikipedia stats.
-
Welcome lad. Do your best for us. That’s all I ask. Let’s await some not so good comments xx
-
Is he any good? I don't know anything about him.
-

Any view on this Gaz

Stats are p!ss poor.
Written off on the second reply - is that a record? It’s like the Donny Welcome - if you’re not Messi, you must be crap.
-
I’m lost for words!
-
Scored 9 goals last season in league 2 at Barrow. If I read it right of Wrexhams website. Can score. Could be the competition we need up front.
-
I actually think it might end up a decent signing and offer something bit different to what we have.
-
Although he’s seemingly not top quality he is actually the profile we needed.
Wide forward who can play left in a 4-3-3 cutting in on his right foot.
He’s got a better goal record than Molyneux:
9 goals in 34 league games for Barrow last year.
18 goals in 45 for Halifax before that in the National League.
Loan is better than permanent in this case, as we can get a better one in the summer and aren’t tied to him like we were Lavery.
Need better planning in the summer so we aren’t doing this again though.
It seems Wrexham just bought him for the sake of it but he doesn’t fit their direct style, being a halfling.
That’s my take.
-
I think for me it just feels like a new low having to loan a player from a team in the same league and then having just come from the national league. I think it doesn’t scream exciting.
-
Quite agree with that summary ncRover.
Let’s give this lad a chance along with the others we have got in January.
Look how Bailey has turned out, a few were doubting that signing.
-

He outscored Molyneux threefold last season playing in a similar position?
Also scored 9 more goals in that Barrow team than Jake Young did.
-
Bogle, agard, lavery now waters to join the club of pointlessly signing shit strikers in January.
-
Grant goes on about energy and this lad has it in abundance.
Described by one of his previous managers as having 'incredible workrate'.
Makes chances for others and can also stick the ball in the net himself.
What's not to like?
-
TS yawn yawn yawn
-
Might not actually be shit and anyway he’s a loan not a perm

Have you got access to GazLaz’ database or are you just looking at the 2023/24 section of Billy’s Wikipedia entry?
-
Grant said he wanted three on the pitch and three to come on he’s got that now
Molyneux Ironside Faal/ Carty
Waters. Faal/Carty. Hurst

I really don't know why you bother

That's a first anyway.....
-
Isn’t Hurst injured?
-
From an account on twitter Don’t let Billy Waters stint at Wrexham blind you how decent of a player he is.
Is he the answer to all the problems no? But I can fully see why the board opted to bring him in, signing him on a permanent when he’s played little game time would of been disastrous if he turned out to be really poor.
But take this as you will, I watched him at Halifax about 20/30 times, always left everything on the pitch, when he had a chance you expected the ball to hit the net.
He left to reunite with Pete Wild, scored 9 goals which is respectable and then the move to Wrexham killed him, he was never getting game time over Mullin or Palmer.
I genuinely would say if I thought it was a shit signing, but I don’t at all - I’d of took him back in a heartbeat at Halifax, albeit a league below, give him chances he won’t disappoint.
-

He enjoys stirring things up, he gets more out than watching the team, that’s if he actually goes

Took your time TS - normally you're quicker than that - did you WUM claxon not go off...?
-
Which “stats”? Certainly not his goals return at barrow. 0.37 goals per 90mins, which aligned with his xG exactly. That means his scoring rate was good and no indication it was a fluke or over performance.
His out of possession stuff is ok for his possession, he’ll at least be trying to win it back in the right areas as well.
His passing numbers are great, decent technician.
Doesn’t create enough for the position he plays weirdly given the fact he’s good on the ball.
“We want a striker that can play wide” that’s not him. If we’ve signed him under that remit (surely we can’t be that clueless) it’s not him. He needs to play as a No10 (attacking midfield freeish role). Don’t play him wide would be my advice.
Likely to play the deeper role/ point of the diamond that Ironside has dropped into recently I’d say.
-
Does this mean the end for Taylor?

I would be very surprised if he ever played again

Positional replacement for Marsh.
Wonder if we'll get some creativity this month...
-
Seem to remember him at barrow away and he never gave our defence chance to settle
-
Hard to tell whether this was on the cards prior to the news about Marsh, as McCann said he was looking for another in the forward line. He said he was after probably two loans and possibly two permanent. So far, three loans and one permanent, with one loan ended, so not quite sure where that leaves us with his overall targets. I got the hunch, there was another potential permanent out there who might have options because GM said "We might have to wait a bit longer" That could still be on unless said target has gone elsewhere.
The sceptic in me wonders if there's someone leaving so McCann is preparing for that.
Looking at Waters, looks like he can sniff out goals of different types, having an instinct by getting himself in good positions. Maybe a bit Taylor like with energy and popping up with goals.
Looks like Wrexham took him on as an insurance policy to keep the goals flowing should they suffer injury.
Well, McCann hasn’t mucked about has he. Definitely no clue what's happening next!
-
GM suggested there'd be some outgoings as the squad is top heavy. Maybe for the other permanent signing coming in, two or three might have to go out.
-
?? Rob Harker ( Halifax) ??

Looks a little like our last Billy - in and around the box.

According to Halifax Town we have agreed a nominal fee
-
Halifax Town look set to lose their talisman striker Rob Harker, with the forward close to signing for Doncaster Rovers.
A nominal fee between the sides have been agreed. Two National League sides wanted his signature too, Southend United and Hartlepool.
Took of there X account.
-

According to Halifax or a BS Twitter rumour account?
-
Just putting it out there. Might be wrong, just saying what I saw that’s all. However my son mentioned this name to me 5 days ago.
-
It’s already on the Rumours section and has been for a few days, which is where it should be.
-
Well that’s told me hasn’t it

some quality finishes there....
-
Not against the signing. I think it’s cleared up what our January strategy is - don’t try to do an overhaul, get a few lads in who will hopefully improve us until the end of the season then go from there.
It would take a hell of a run to get in the play-offs now, so perhaps it’s sensible to not blow a load of money trying to reach for something that isn’t very likely to happen.
It’s always frustrating having nothing to play for this early in the season, but hopefully this approach will mean we can have a better window in the summer.
-
We certainly know how to turn the Waters into whines.
-
Based on seeing him play a few tines before, he could do really well under Grants way (if he has the right players to do so) of playing.
3 upfront, high press, high energy..... that can create opportunities for others, not just looking at what he may score.

Plenty of them from six yards and under too.

Tin hat time
-
As normal, usual names write off the poor sod before a balls kicked in anger!!
-
I’m fairly happy with this.. Good experience and apparently a good attitude. Just because it hasn’t worked out at Wrexham, doesn’t mean he’s useless.
Better record than Moly, who many on here rave about.
Also allows us to still clear the decks in the summer as it’s just a loan. Could quite easily see him doing well though and signing unlike most premier league kids who if they do well, are then out of our league.
-
We certainly know how to turn the Waters into whines.
Let’s just hope Waters isn’t a damp squib.
-
I would have signed him just for his name - the obvious one to get our Mo-Jo working
I like this signing, he brings experience and something different
-
Waters sounds a good signing for this level and it’s not a Jan panic signing on a 3 year deal so it’s an improvement on previous seasons.
Is it confirmed Faal is staying now? Assume we must be done signing forwards if he is… still think we could get a bit of pace into the side if there’s room
-
Excellent signing - just what is needed for a successful run in without Miller.
Well done Grant once again.
And I love that he talks about " Being a part of something - Play Offs why not? " like Craig he's not here to pick a wage up - very encouraging.

it seems Sir David Wilkie (not the one of WATER - swimming FAME) didn't do his research and "cut the wrong leg short :headbang:""
-
My issue is not with billy its we have no pace and we have missed that for the last couple of years
-
I think we have some significant pace, it's just that we don't move the ball forward for people to run on to.

Good point hound.
Not sure if he takes penalties, although they don’t actually count towards a striker’s goal tally (apparently).
-

Could you be more specific?
-
He sounds the sort of player who will always commit 100% and sustaining him at the necessary level of fitness and resilience will be a test for the staff concerned.
People could read this comment as pessimistic, but we cannot ignore the record and I earnestly hope that we have at last turned that particular corner.
-
He is a hard worker, decent finisher and will set the tone for closing the opposition down. He’s the type that pressures defenders into mistakes, we need a forward like that. Not easy to break into the Wrexham side as a forward. It’s a rebuilding signing, might not be exciting, but just what we need at the minute.
-

Listening to Billy’s interview he mentioned he’s been to the training ground before so Gaz is probably right with that

It was the summer he signed for Barrow. .
-
If you’re of a nervous disposition, avoid the Twitter thread on there about his signing. It’s breathtaking. The IQ is not strong on it. Hope to god Billy doesn’t read it himself.
-
Greetings from North Wales.
We signed Waters towards the end of our NL season as cover in case Mullin got injured, which he never did. So he barely played. He never got a proper chance here and when he did play in cup games this season one thing I will say is that he ran his nuts off for the team.
He never got a run of games for us so its impossible to judge him on his Wrexham career. Did well at Barrow though and I'd say that's more of a yardstick for you.
Also he must be a good professional as Parky does not sign idiots and big time Charlie's (some of you may disagree with that :) )
-
Hope billy comes on and within 10 minutes sticks one into the top corner from 18yards. He may need to do something like that to start to change peoples minds on this transfer.

Hope you're tight. I doesn't take much to get the crowd onside. All they have to do is show the 'right stuff'', showing they care about winning and losing, get people off their seats and they'll be on to a winner.

Baz, that comment about getting people up off their seats is very important.
Up to Grant coming back, for two years or so I had barely got up out of my seat at matches due to the utterly boring football we had had to endure.
So, even though we are not where we want to be with regards to our league position, I am enjoying watching us play again and bringing in players like BW will only add to that enjoyment.
Win or lose fans will, more often than not, get behind the team if they can see purpose and effort in the performances.
-
Pleased with this signing and could maybe already agreed a fee in summer for him if it all goes well, would think he will be on decent wages at Wrexham and would think we be paying a fair chunk of it aswell, from what I remember of him is that’s he is fairly quick and in same type of player as Tyler smith
-
Waters was signed by Wrexham in March last year.
Had he seen out the season at Barrow, he would have almost definitely hit double figures.
In that case, Rovers Twitter would have thought it was a good signing. Especially had it been in the summer.
I think they’re expecting us to be throwing 6 figure sums about to get in demand players in January for some reason.
We all know you can build a squad capable of promotion from this division without spending a penny on transfer fees.
-
I was quite surprised at first, the first reaction is why's he not good enough for a league rival. But look through the leagues that's quite common - I suspect Cheltenham were underwhelmed when they signed Alfie May and look how that turned out. Let's not forget Billy Sharp's championship record when he joined us was quite poor and that worked out very well.
However, Waters' record isn't that bad is it? I just hope it's one with a view to a permanent if it works out and not just another stop gap. We've now got 4 strikers and that's important as lack of depth with the injuries has been a real problem for us so far this season. They've gone in quick this window, that suggests to me they're not scraping for panic buys near the end of the window but getting the targets they wanted. Whether the strategy behind it is right only time will tell. Mccann can't just think towards next year, we need to improve in H2 of this season.
-
For any forward to flourish here the mid field has got to function quicker getting the ball forward and start to get about the field better, Westbrook is a big miss in that department which has been a problem for quality balls opening up the game (Faal probably has done that as much as any mid fielders) and has given the defence little cover at times and are easy to play against and nullify.
Good luck Billy.

He’s contracted to Wrexham until 2025

My thoughts exactly, definitely not one to play in a No.10 role.

Waters was in the Barrow side which beat us 2-0 back in September 2022, when it really should have been at least 4-0.
One of the worst Rovers performances I'd witnessed in a long time, especially the second half.
I don't remember Billy particularly, but then again I closed my eyes every time Barrow attacked in the second half.
As a complete aside, he shares the same name as our family doctor in Donny when I was a kid. He saw me and my siblings into the world, so if Billy can deliver as well as our old doctor, I'll be happy.

I'm not so sure. If he has the instinct to get into the box as an extra man then that could come from wide or deeper in general play.
We don't see enough of our wider players or midfielders making a nuisance of themselves in the box.
-
I would feel better if I knew whether he ‘knew the area’
Yeah but what's his thoughts on people standing at away games and the coach parking at gillingham?
Do you mean the Doncaster area, the penalty area or the giving birth ‘area’?
-
Pretty sure Waters will be breaking on a regular basis, so he’ll be in the box in no time.
-
Looks a good player on that youtube clip...i think he will start tomorrow.
-
I think he'll do well for us.
I think he'll be here next season too.
-

Playing in a McCann team he could flourish, score regularly and become a fans favorite. Seems like a player who just needs the right opportunity.
-
Looking at old Barrow and Halifax lineups he can play either wing or no.10 position.
Also on that clip he seems to be able to finish with his left or right foot.
We have one of the best hold up strikers in the division who I think he’ll work well off too.
Hopefully he’s good for 60 mins tomorrow as Faal no good out wide for me.
