Title: Doomsday clock
Post by: normal rules on January 24, 2024, 01:15:37 pm
I see the clock of doom has remained at 90s to midnight . No need to rush out and buy more stockpiles of beans and bottled water just yet.

If Trump wins the next Presidential election I would imagine other countries capable (Japan for example) of producing nuclear weapons wouldn’t hesitate to do so, especially once Trump has pulled America (“First”) out of NATO.

BRR would get his wish then as Putin waits for Ukraine to run out of munitions then rolls his tanks into Ukraine & beyond as NATO either looks on helplessly or ‘takes on’ Putin without the aid of the US. Where then would the doubtless escalation towards the use of nuclear weapons leave the world?

It doesn’t bear thinking of.

The founder of the clock said the purpose was to “preserve civilisation by scaring men in to rationality”.

I like Steven Pinker’s take on it. “Another example of humanity’s tendency toward historical pessimism.” Lots of predictions of man made destruction have gone unfulfilled. See Paul Ehrlich.

It has been ticking closer to midnight ever since 1991.

In that time:

- Global population in poverty DOWN
- Food supply per person UP
- Total global population UP
- Democracy UP and autocracy DOWN.
- Deaths from natural disasters DOWN
- Resources showing no signs of running out.

The end is nigh indeed.

Many human improvement indices are showing progress, but the big issue is climate change.
This will blow away the improvements if not dealt with urgently.

What matters is the total amount of carbon gases emitted, and how soon the serious reductions begin.
It is shown here in this chart;

Democracy is down.
Animal species gone.
Global warming very much beyond a safe level.
conflict caused by geo poverty increased - gonna go off the scale with deserts expanding.

You all forgot about Rovers being in the bottom 5 of the EFL.

Bloody hell, I've had to amend it. It's bottom 4 now.

You got any data to back up your doomer narrative?

Maybe less munitions would be needed if Russia was a normal country you reckon?
