Title: Set up at free kicks
Post by: Jersey Rover on February 14, 2024, 09:44:44 pm
I often wonder when there are free kicks on the edge of the box and clear shooting opportunities why teams don’t set up with 4 defenders on the goal line, 2 on each post and the other 6 ready to chase the ball down. With 11 players between the ball and the goal line, averages of blocking the shot must be higher

Great minds think alike Jersey! I was screaming ( via I follow ) to our defense to put Adeluku on the near post as Salford prepared to take that free-kick.
Also while we are at it  When we are taking an attacking corner why not post a player beyond the far post to latch in to any second header . And finally, there must be more throw-in options than the ones our fullbacks  backs employ

Because they could then never be offside and put their players where they want

To be honest is there any on here who didn't expect that Free Kick to end up in the back of the net ,nearly every time we give a Free Kick away in that area it usually ends up there.

It was a great free kick tbf.
There are plenty that hit the wall or go high or wide or both, just not as memorable somehow.

Anyone else old enough to remember Glynn Snodin's free kicks back in the day? Absolute barn stormers they were. He'd take a long run up, head down and belt the ball as hard as he could. No finesse whatsoever but they were bloody effective. I think it was at a home game against York City where we had a free kick from just outside the 'D'. York (who'd obviously done their homework) had a 6-7 man wall with a player on each post. Glynn gave it an almighty whack that was so hard and fast that their goalkeeper and both defenders didn't even move. It nearly shredded the net and put a hole in the Family Stand. Brilliant goal.

When Glynn hit it, it stayed it. What a player.

Was a great free kick tbf and when you start players on the line it’s playing everyone onside and then you get others obstructing the keeper

Have Rovers scored a direct free kick since Coppinger's at home to Hull three years ago?

Alick Jeffrey had a thunderbolt of a shot and I remember that even in the dullest of games you could always expect it would be sparked into life at a single stroke from him .

It was as good as having a penalty a Snod free kick!

Snods free kicks were great but he couldn't hit it as hard as Steve Reed.

And still the defining Snod free kick was away at Bradford City that amazing Boxing Day when Rovers won 1-0... with 8 players on the pitch.

Talking of Free kicks ( mainly from distance / in the defensive half) EVERY Team we play or I see on Telly crib , rob , steal and generally do anything to get the Ball even nearer to the opposition goal

Cairns the other night came out to take a Free kick for a foul just outside his area . Call it 25 yards out. By the time Centre Back had carried it forwards towards half way Cairns then tapped it forward , then spun it forwards as they do then bent down and placed it as far forward as he could reach

Once he had finished it was maybe 15 maybe 20 yards further forward and a simple ( some would say more accurate ) chip forward for him

And what do we do ? Just watch. We often take a kick from behind where the offence was committed . I don't get it . Why just us ?

You are so right about this, but I have read from some of our fans that they don’t want to see us cheating to gain an advantage and win games by doing so.

Snodin free kick at Bradfordon Boxing Day- it bounced 5 times went under wall & nearly stuck in all mud!!!! I was directly in line -on their kop -obviously couldnt celebrate as my better half queried “didnt Rovers just score?”…..”Err shut up!!!”
Cant remember crowd but it was packed - we were turned away from paddock area infront of old stand (full) & Rovers away end - likewise full - so no option!
Strippers in Belle Vue pub beforehand!!!!
What a day!

Ha Ha!!!! That's brilliant!

I think that this was also the match where young Snod was holding the defence line and literally waving the Bradford team towards him inviting them to attack, in the full knowledge that they weren't going to get anything past him that day. What a fantastic day out that was. Pity I missed the strippers though....

I arrived late in Bradford that day and also ended up amongst their fans. An immense achievement by Rovers that day.

Opposition players would just surround the goalkeeper if players stay on the line. It would end up a situation where both teams have all their players in the 6 yard box. Would that mean there is less chance of the free kick going directly in? Possibly, but more chance of a goal coming via other means.
