Title: My first Rovers’ team !
Post by: graingrover on February 16, 2024, 02:35:12 pm
I will hopefully soon be celebrating my 70th year as a Rovers fan and am hanging on in! Here is my first team.
My apologies for posting photo twice …a generational problem !

Tony Haries must have been amongst the first if not the first to get a Rovers replica kit.

3rd row, 2nd and 3rd from the left are Johnny Mooney and George Bell. They worked at Bridon (British Ropes) when I started there in 1984.

George Bell used to live on Scarthe Ave. Balby. Near the Open All Hours shop.

And is that a supporters club badge and date bars on his chest? Started mine in mid-seventies and know they was available in 60's but did'nt realise you could get them in the 50's.

George was a fitter at Bridon. He must be about 86 now, by my calculations. He was a stalwart member of the Ropes Club on Carr Hill when I knew him.

Another regular in the Ropes club back then was Johnny Haasz. He came over to England as a member of the famous Hungary squad that beat England 6-3 in 1953, although he didn't take part in the game.

He played for Workington Town after moving to England and told me many stories of his ventures with "Vorkington!". I remember asking him if he knew Alick Jeffrey, and he told me he was a very good player, but he rated Laurie Sheffield more, claiming Sheffield was "Very strong."

A lovely bloke. He died in 2018.

Johnny lived on Carr Hill and worked at ATS? Tyres at the top of Carr Hill. He used to play football with us on Fisher’s  (Westfield) Park on Balby Road. I remember seeing him play for Workington at Belle Vue as one of my brothers knew him from local football in Donny. A great bloke, he would sometimes lend me his membership card to get in the Penny Farthing, Time and Place or Golden Arrow club whatever it was called at that time.

Yes he worked at ATS on Carr Hill when I knew him. I believe his son John junior worked there too.

I think young John did. I had a conversation on Memories of Doncaster on Facebook with him last year regarding his dad. Young John occasionally watched us on the park when his dad played with us.
