Title: Result today
Post by: Chris Black come back on February 17, 2024, 04:59:31 pm
First time we have scored 5 goals away from home in a league game since...we hammered Southend United 7-1 on 22 October 2019 (scorers included 2 for Kwame Thomas and 2 own goals from Nathan Ralph).

The win today extends our league unbeaten run to four games, the longest since...August 2022.

Joe Ironside scoring today makes it 14 league goals for him and our top league scorer since...John Marquis scored 21 and Malik Wilks got 14 in League One during the 2018/19 season under McCann.

Unbelievable the transformation in the last few games, difficult to put your finger on what’s changed but the arrival of Adelakun seems to have been a big factor.

Great win but they were very poor and will be lucky not to go down

They are like a sieve at home but we wouldn't have won that let alone score five even a month ago.

And…and… we weren’t at our best, we have definitely played better in the last few games, the new Jan signings have really helped us here.

Isn’t it great to be on the right side of a thrashing. Adelukan has been a real boost, got a goal in him, can put in a quality cross and has a long throw. We looked really good going forward and were clinical. At 1-2 our Defence looked shakey for a period, but we got our act together with Wood looking the calming influence.
Super win, let’s get an unbeaten run going to change the losing mentality of the last 3 years

Sad but wonderful to see all the Grimsby fans leaving early.

I think it's fair to say the January signings were very good and are settling in very well.

I thought in the first half we were quite poor after the first 10 minutes and lucky to go in ahead but second half we controlled the game excellently.

What we did much better is play the game in the right areas second half. We've got some talented players and some of the moves were good today.

Good win and finally some momentum.

Three good goals too, Moly’s first followed quickly followed by Joe’s. The deflected goal was a good ball whipped in by Moly into the six yard box & therefore difficult to defend (reckon Joe would have gobbled it up if their defender hadn’t got the touch) then Craig’s first goal kind of ‘bobbled’ his way after breaking from a ping pong in the area but he got a good contact on it & it went through a pack of bodies into the net.

Kyle’s goal was very assured cutting inside & curling one into the far corner past a despairing keeper.

Being picky because before the game I would have snatched your hand off for a 90+minute deflection off Joe Ironside’s backside!

Not 100% sure but had the cross gone to Joe rather than hitting the defender I think Joe was offside

It was Sterry as well who crossed it in.

Difference to previous seasons we’ve been struggling come Jan and then somehow make the team weaker with signings.

This time we’ve got some quality in and now we need to get consistency in decent performances to set us up for a better start next season.

Adelakun must feel wanted, after spending a long time watching instead of playing at Lincoln. For any human being feeling rated and wanted means a lot. Brilliant result, at last! Why couldn’t we have started the season like this? Not many Saturdays where as a rovers fan we’ve been able to be happy, tonight’s one of them. I raise a cup of char to them tonight.

Anderson laid the ball off beautifully to Craig after a scramble in their box.
Craig picked his spot and put it in the corner.
We were right behind the keeper and he couldn’t see the ball until it was past him.

Unbelievable the transformation in the last few games, difficult to put your finger on what’s changed but the arrival of Adelakun seems to have been a big factor.

Adelukan, Craig and Lo-Tutala, they have all contributed to a complete revival, a goalie who can dominate his box giving a defence some confidence, a midfielder who isn't afraid to "get stuck in" and a winger who isn't afraid of taking somebody on and shooting.

IMHO a combination of this and a change of formation to two sitting midfielders who have both stepped up to the mark (Craig & Bailey, the latter has been a great defender but IMHO up till these last 4 games not at his best in midfield)

The confidence gained must help our prospects of a strong finish to the season  :scarf: :scarf:

Edit: And of course also a more reassuring GK

Interestingly the last three times we have scored 5 or more have all been away (Southend 7-1, 5-1 at FCUM in FA Cup and today, whereas our last three times we have let in 5 have been at home (Stockport & Morecambe this season and Rotherham at Home in 2021-22 (the league match)

The last time we scored 5 at home was 5-0 against Rochdale in McCann's first tenure, and the last time we conceded 5 away was 0-6 at Ipswich in 2021-22 (which was after the 0-6 at home to Rotherham in AMC Cup)

Well what can we say, if that's not progress ?

No going overboard about the result but the great start we made killed them, both goals were well taken and gave us a precious fast start. We then allowed them back into the game and they had a good 20 min spell in the middle of the half, the penalty they got was very fortunate, i thought the attacker threw himself to the ground but it spurred them into the best spell of the match for them, but for some very assured defending from a very solid pairing in Wood and Anderson they could of got back into the game.

Not sure what was said in the break but we came out and imposed ourselves on the game, took them completely out of the equation and managed to score the three goals through persistence and attacking threat that we kept up for the whole half, this to me was pleasing to see as in other games we have taken our foot of the pedal and suffered for it, we kept going right up until we made the multiple substitutions in the later part of the half, this changed our effectiveness but saw us through and allowed some to get a rest after a good solid display.

Standouts for me, Good solid leadership from our two centre half's, they bossed there men and never really let up, with a keeper behind them who's confident and communicates constantly with his defenders they all seemed very much more secure, no major scares from crosses and set piece plays with this setup.

Adelakun, who just keeps putting in very consistent displays and made us a much more direct and attacking force, his deeds seemed to lift the side to play at a better level. His inclusion has transformed our attacking forward play massively.

I thought the kid Craig had another very solid game, keeps getting better and imposed himself tremendously on the game, great engine and looks to have a calmness and control that belies his experience.

Like i said earlier, great result against a poor opposition who are having their own crisis moments but we can only play what's in front of us and today we did that with some aplomb. If we can build on this and stretch this mini run we could still finish the season in a positive manner ready for next year, starting in a much better mind frame then we have had for the last 4 years.

Some progress at last.

You can’t just put it down to Adelakun. Yes, he’s added the X factor, but:

Richard Wood coming back
The injury to Close meant Craig had to step up and he has
Similarly, an injury to Olowu gave Anderson his place back and that’s worked
Finally, the new keeper has made a big difference. Why we didn’t do something in the summer (better than Lawlor) we’ll never know.

Keeper I think is the best signing.
It's the fact he seams to give the defence confidence,so takes pressure off them to just go out and play

If you put that Southend United result to one side (they were in financial meltdown and had two players sent off during the game) then you have to go back to the 2016/17 season in League Two when we last scored five away from home in the league - on 1 April 2017 in again a 1-5 win at Grimsby and also 10 September 2016 in a 1-5 win at Morecambe. Danny Andrew played for Grimsby in that game and there was a L Molyneux playing for Morecambe, although a Lee rather than Luke.

new keeper started 4 games ago, woody came back 5 games ago, so the defence is better immediately.   Big Tom has found his mojo again, him and woody won almost every aerial duel today.  Hakeeb up top playing as a grown up version of mo faal, is really settling in nicely..  and matty Craig is adapting better to mens footy as each week goes by. So great recruitment,  and returning injured lads Have made such a difference..

TLT and Adelakun have been instrumental in improving us in both the first and final third. We're more assured at the back and we have an outlet going forward, which also means we're not constantly inviting pressure in dangerous areas.

... and at 1-2 we somehow hit the Post right on HT . I've not seen in , did it hit the Post via keeper

It would have sent us in 1-3 and perhaps game over but we soon assumed control again

Thought game would be stopped soon after when "the Fire Drill" started
