A slight change to the heading of this post to reflect the mood on the forum, heady days are here again with a new more energetic style of play, where we defend better and actually score goals as well, quite a new novelty, and backs up the work the management have put into the team and probably the players reality that they were in danger of taking the team down to non league football.
What a change a couple of weeks make and a little run of good results both on and off the field of play.
Next week we take on a big test against a side who from memory easily disposed of us earlier in the season 2-0 and are just outside the play off positions, play a 4 4 2 uncomplicated formation, and against Morecambe yesterday drew 1-1 although having the better of the game and the high number of fifteen shots but only three on target, which looks like they have games like us in front of goal at times.
Yesterday as someone pointed out we reversed that trend yesterday scoring more goals than we had shots on target, a nice habit to form if we can repeat.
So what do we do? the same again team for me, can we get another win? we need to if we have any ambition to end the season well. Ali Hamadi who scored both goals at Wimbledon against us has moved on to Ipswich Town and is a big miss for them, and our older version in central defence Anderson and Wood doing the basic defending heading and kicking the ball has been a resounding success, so on paper they don't hold as much threat up front, but are strong in midfield, another area where we have improved dramatically, and will need to step up again in this game, Wimbledon being strong in that area.
So lot's to discuss, can we extend our unbeaten run? an important question, Are you getting your enthusiasm back? can we finish strong and get up the table to respectability?
Please have your say.
-
We really do need a result next weekend, just as important now as it was four games ago.
Then it was to rid ourselves of looking over our shoulder at relegation which although not disappearing altogether has receded quite a bit in a short time.
Now the important bit is showing it is not just a flash in the pan, keep the good run going, and build enthusiasm in supporters that has been tested to the limit over a long period.
The threads on this forum alone show the extent of relief many of us are now undergoing, and to be honest I wouldn't be surprised even more so by the management and players who must have been feeling the pressure when they were being questioned so much about their game.
Its a good start, but we need to keep it going and finish the season well, and this game will be a very big test against a team with aspirations to get into the playoffs.
Definitely a game to look forward to.
-
Will be a tough game but our confidence should be improving all the time with each unbeaten game that passes. Hoping for an entertaining afternoon with both teams going for it. Wouldn’t look past a score draw. Going for 2-2
-
It’s a win for me (data available).
-
I see that Salford and Swindon have tough fixtures on Saturday so if we engineer three points then there's a good chance we'll close the gap above us.
-
Worth keeping an eye on them tomorrow night.
They have been a solid side this year but their centre back partnership recently has been a makeshift veteran left back alongside a young loanee.
Bugiel is a tough bas**rd up front but I’d back our boys to handle him.
Kelly could be a threat in behind but I’m turning in to the boy who cried wolf about that type of warning.
-
The good thing for rovers is the fact that Wimbledon have a fair bit of travelling to do as well this week, a steady away trip to Crawley on Tuesday night then another day of travelling Friday upto doncaster, not far off 1000 miles this week for them to also contend with.
I believe this will take its toll on them also and can only bring the chances of a win for Rovers closer to actually happening. My money this week is on Craig to be booked at any time as 3 yellows in last 3 games so he is consistent, it's great to have a player who puts himself about and isn't scared to get stuck in, massive turn around has happened and I for 1 am so glad I took advantage of the season ticket black Friday sale to ensure next seasons season ticket. Doncaster win 3-1 on Saturday, Ironside to score 2, Craig to be booked.

Since you mention having to look over our shoulder I noticed that three teams beneath us that changed managers recently haven’t had much of a new boss bounce. FGR one win in 5 under Cotterill, Sutton no wins in 8 and Colchester 1 win in 6 under Cowley, although they’ve picked up a few draws and are perhaps a tougher prospect right now.
-
It would appear that Wimbledon are out of form and struggling for goals.

They were at home to Crawley tonight. Even if they were away it is only a short trip to Crawley. About 25/30 miles I would estimate.
Where on earth do you get 1000 miles from.
It is about 185 miles from Wimbledon to Doncaster.

Pedantry is an excessive concern with minor or unimportant details or rules. Pointing out that a Wimbledon to Doncaster round trip is significantly less than 1,000 miles isn’t pedantic, it’s just correcting something that is glaringly wrong. Like challenging someone who claims that Doncaster is in France or that Rovers are in the Premier League.
It feels like me pointing that out is pedantic but maybe as the expert you could advise…
 ;)

Is the centre half with the ridiculous shorts still playing for them

Not even a round trip Nick
They only have to make the one way journey before the match. They don’t go back until after the game.
So 185 miles is 815 less than 1000 so as you say I was definitely not being pedantic.
I will leave that to SS
There is no way I want to steal your pedantic title from you SS :)

looking forward to this one, might even go t sal for a pint too

The mood of optimism worries me!
It’s the sort of game where we’ve won the fans back and there’s a decent turnout and it all goes to cock. We’ve been there many many times.
But not this time, we’re kicking on, playing some good football and getting 3 points.

Perhaps their team coach has the same make of sat nav that I have.
It’s a TomCat, a much cheaper version of the TomTom.
I now realise the clue is in the name. The bugger has me roaming all over the shop. Especially at nights.

At least you will have Cats Eyes in road to guide you . Shaw thing I bet

Nice double up there John.
-
I do believe Wimbledon have Harry diving Pell playing for them
-
It wouldn't be rovers like to win a game whilst a mini feel good factor is back. Here's to hoping. Tough game. If we win this we are back IMO
-
Maybe Wimbledon, realising that Doncaster is in Scotland, have planned a 1000 mile trip via Glasgow?

Wouldn’t another goal fest be great for morale? And the GD. Which at the moment is an extra point difference looking at the teams above .
-
CC3, I am finding your posts increasingly good to read.
That’s very kind & most humbling hound.
I can only put this sudden ‘spurt of inspiration’ I appear to have found down to my recent move to the coast.
That & the occasional Glenmorangie Single Malt.

Wimbledon has not been a happy hunting ground for us in recent times, but with the increased confidence, the new recruits and the attitude of the team you have to fancy Rovers to give it a go at getting a result here. I don't think we ought to be over-confident or gung ho about how well we are going to do, but getting a point away from home would be great, getting more would be excellent.

Not expecting this to be a overly exciting game. What wimbledon have been good at this year is grinding out a draw away from home (most away draws in the league with the least amount of goals conceded)
What we need to do its hit them early like last week and make them come out and play more.
Can see them trying to play the game like newport did and grab a late winner

Oops! Thank you, better being away from the filth. Home advantage should apply, and it makes me more hopeful of a win.

We have a pretty good record against Wimbledon at home.
Since the new AFC Wimbledon was formed we have won 4 drawn 1 & lost 1 at home.

Per lap ?

Drivers have been lost on there for years lol
-
Their away record is pretty strong in League Two, as the 8th best and outranks their current league placing of 9th. However that is built off form earlier in the season. Their last 10 away league games has been 1 win, 4 draws and 5 losses. With the single win being 1-2 at Crawley Town.
-
I note that their centre-back loanee from Crystal Palace (Kofi Balmer) got injured on Tuesday night with a hamstring issue. He apparently had a long throw that they were exploiting well.
-
Top and bottom of it is we need the three points and to keep the better form run going.
-
COYR.
-
First win of the play off push. Ticked off safety now let's head for the play offs

Confirmed out.

Whatever your on can I have some. There is no emoji so is that a serious thought?
We would need to double our points tally of 36 in last 14 games. Even that may well not be enough.
36 in 14
11 wins and 3 draws or 12 wins and 2 defeats.
Even the most optimistic of us knows that is pie in the sky.
But Padge nothing wrong with dreaming. I do it all the time.
We just need to finish the season as strongly as possible and set us up for promotion next season.
-
Great 3 points for us today and Mansfield have done us a big favour putting five past Salford, goal difference down to two now.
-
Only our second clean sheet in last 15 games.
-
Very good performance that. A lot more comfortable than the score line suggests. Went about the game with the same hunger and desire as the previous few games. For the first time this season I was sat there thinking I feel safe now with the defence I can’t see them scoring.
Special mention to the lad from Cambridge, had his shirt pulled all through the game, I’m not sure he even won a free kick. It feels like we got a new team out there now.
-
Thought we made hard work of that.
Should have been much more comfortable.
We are starting to look like a team now.
Craig, Adulukin, Wood and the keeper Lo Tutula have transformed us.
Wood is like a new signing same as the other 3.
Onwards and upwards.
-
Biggins was superb! He deserves a mention, he’s really turned his form around. I know he’s playing for a contract, but still.
Craig will be playing for a top L1 / lower championship club next season. He was 2 steps ahead of the opposition at every turn today.
We need Moly to step up to take the attention away from Haks! Luke missed a sitter.
Anderson continuing to prove me wrong and looks back to his old self. I guess pace doesn’t matter when you have an expert organiser next to you.
Ironside, brilliant footballer. If he had pace he’d be playing in the championship.
Solid performance all round. They had no ideas on how to hurt us whatsoever.
We are seeing the rewards for sticking with this coaching staff. Well done to the fan base as a whole for being patient with Grant and Cliff.
-
Anderson was faultless at the back ably assisted by Wood but both backed by a confident keeper who snuffed out any danger.
Craig really becoming more influential being good on the ball and being tenacious when needed. Far fewer mistakes being made so the basic are there for all to see.
Yes, at times we were a bit wasteful today and a second goal would have killed the game with a bit more composure in the final third.
When we keep the ball on the deck, we look quite fluid and I don't think the players will be happy with the overall performance even though we're happy with the three points.
From here onwards, we can approach each game with no fear and make those teams above us look average.
-

Solidity began with Lo Tutula who was the first brick in the wall at Sutton since he dispelled the defenders’ worry of having to play in front of a passive goalkeeper, At that stage, Adelakun had not really slotted into any kind of role because it’s difficult as a forward to know what to expect from those who ought to be “supplying” you. Working in the midfield Craig, did not take too long to understand those around him and obviously the forwards have responded suitably to his much more dynamic (than Close) style.
And, as you say, Wood and Anderson can rely on each other and that is to play predictably, which is something you can’t really confidently say of Olowu.

What happebed to Sterry 1st half did someone deck him? Couldn't see clearly from West stand

If you watch Ironside closely he's very clever and more often than not he's got hold of a defender and backing in . His holdup play for the goal was superb.
-
Another great win & gutsy performance, keep it going lads.
-
Joe also put Bailey in the clear with a deftly flicked header but Bailey snatched at the chance and sliced his shot wide.

Which is exactly the reason he doesn't get the free kicks the crowd scream for, he gives as much as he gets. Love him!
-
Anyone underestimating the impact of TLT needs to take a closer look at what he does. He's exactly what we've missed all season. He's really good compared to what we've had and that in turn breeds confidence in the defence. He's had an excellent impact.
-

Just got a hand in the face. Don’t think it was malicious.
It was the biggest over reaction I've seen for a long time from a Rovers player. It was embarrassing
-
I've not been today, what was the performance like overall today? The AFC Wimbledon fans on there forum are saying they were awful and what made it worrying/worse is the we were also awful.
Or is just Wimbledon fans that can't accept that we was the better team?
-
Well, in my opinion, we were excellent in the first half, fast ball movement and plenty of attacking intent.
Sat in the south stand, we hardly saw the ball down our end.
Rovers by a mile the better first half team.
Wimbledon started the second half well but apart from a couple of dangerous balls into our box, didn’t really threaten to get the better of our defence.
Anderson and Wood once again snuffed out the opposition strikers.
As the second half wore on we again began to take control and had a couple of very good chances to double the lead but both Bailey and Molyneux failed to score.
We were a long way from being awful today.
-
I wasn’t there either. I don’t give a monkeys how we played really. We won again. Probably bitter wombles
-
We were absolutely superb until they potentially targeted and injured the unplayable Adelakun.
For the rest of the game we kept our concentration and got the job done. But we should have had more.
They were very poor. I would bet on whoever they play next.
Going by their support today, I would guess them saying we were poor fits their agenda against the manager.
-

You’ve nailed today’s performance for me there ncRover, I saw the game the same way.
Biggo for me was MOTM.
Craig again was superb, some brilliant passes and some really gritty tackles.
Wood and Anderson were superb again.
Woody made a howler by taking too long on the ball and getting dispossessed but reacted immediately by chasing their guy and winning the ball back. He was hell-bent on putting right his gaff and full credit to him for that.
I walked to the ground with two Wimbledon fans and they asked me who they should be afraid of.
Without hesitation I replied “Andelakun”.
Two minutes was all it took!
Wimbledon were terrible today, heavens knows how they were ninth in the table.
We should have been miles clear before the end but we saw out the game and secured another three points.
Well done Rovers.
-
I have seen five different versions of our number 47s name on the forum tonight.

Yes the Anderson bashers are eating more humble pie. Another great performance today.

Anderson & Wood did everything that was asked of them today & don't want this to sound negative but Wimbledon played to their strengths and just lumped it forward. It would be interesting to see how they'd cope together against a more fluent attacking team that look to play & get it in behind. Having said that as a team I thought our defensive shape was superb and everyone stuck to their tasks and the cm's shielded the back line well .

I've not been today, what was the performance like overall today? The AFC Wimbledon fans on there forum are saying they were awful and what made it worrying/worse is the we were also awful.
Or is just Wimbledon fans that can't accept that we was the better team?
First half we were the better side and deserving of the lead. They got the initiative back a bit after HT but they didn’t really create very much. As the game opened up we had a few really good opportunities to kill the game that we didn’t take, which made it more nervy than it needed to be.
I’d say overall not a classic game, but we were worthy of the narrow win. They offered very little, as for us I’ve seen us play better but we looked pretty solid, robust and not in too much danger of ever throwing it away today.

I have seen five different versions of our number 47s name on the forum tonight.
Sorry mate, the ‘n’ was a clumsy typo!

It makes it fun reading.

It was a very strange game, I thought. We set off like a house on fire, got a good goal and then it seemed like we were playing well within ourselves.
I was thinking,at half time, that TLT hadn’t made a save. Cut out a few crosses or broke up an attack by sprinting off his line, but no saves?
Second half, they tried wrestling the initiative, but they never really threatened our goal. A large part of that was down to Wood & Anderson, but fair play to all the lads for making it difficult for them.
However, the last 5 mins and injury time seemed to last forever and it was a relief to hear the final whistle. Special mention to Moly for totally missing the ball, late on, when it was easier to side foot it in. Unbelievable!

I thought we were really good today and probably deserved to win by more. However, the Wimbledon fans that I spoke to on the train back down to Kings X thought that we were awful!! Absolutely bizarre!

Rovers were very good today. I have not been for a while and the biggest difference I noticed was the fitness and sharpness. We were first to every second ball and we’re getting really stuck in. I was really impressed. Anderson and Wood were solid at the back. Overall, we should have won by more - 8 / 10. This run is looking like GM has turned a corner with these fellas.

What happebed to Sterry 1st half did someone deck him? Couldn't see clearly from West stand
Just got a hand in the face. Don’t think it was malicious.
It was the biggest over reaction I've seen for a long time from a Rovers player. It was embarrassing
Agree 100% no place for cheating like that in my view, lost some respect for the lad today

He put a photo on social media after game. Quite a lot of scratching and some blood.

Bet that will be when he went down in the second half.

Looks nasty, not seen the replay but must have been a boot scraped down his ear and neck.
Thought he played very well yesterday.

Despite my anti Time wasting stance I thought Moly was also due some real credit for the quick thinking late on when he was given a brilliant pass down right touchline.
He could have gone for it and took the full back on but instead drew him in and then dummied a move and let it go out for a throw to us
Despite what. I normally think that was a great move

bit harsh that a hand in face could of easily caught a stray finger in the eye

It was a hand in the face, Sterry blocked a run by a Wimbledon player who was trying to get to a pass played across goal and the attacker put his hands out to protect himself and “hit” Sterry in the face with some force.
It wasn’t cheating and it probably would have hurt him.
Incidentally it was only a couple of games back that people were praising our lads for matching the Salford shithousery, saying we should do it more often.

At the game yesterday, from my spot on the West Stand, it looked to me like Sterry just threw himself down, having seen the extended highlights it is clear to me now that he was caught in the eye / face so I apologize unreservedly for my comments, but still don't stand for cheats !
Also having seen those, How the hell did Molly miss that ???

You've gotta love local journo:s reporting on matches. Apart from mentioning that Wimbledon fell behind after 3mins when Adelakun fired into the corner of the net giving their goalkeeper no chance, they never mentioned Rovers once, not once in the whole match report. If you hadn't seen the headline "Dons lose at Donny" you wouldn't have a bloody clue who the Dons were playing. Talk about one sided reporting.
