RIP rover
https://www.evertonfc.com/news/4000353/rip-paul-holmes
He seemed like a really nice guy. A mate of mine in Bradford had a son called Neil Holmes who was at Everton from about 15 to 19. Paul Holmes actually Neil the Everton cup final shirt with Holmes on the back. A great gesture.

Holmes may be the strangest player we've ever had. He was the very definition of "ordinary" with us and no-one would've blinked when he was released. Then he ends up in the Premier League playing in the same team as Peter Beardsley.
Fair play to the bloke for that development. And commiserations to hove family and friends.
-
I agree it was a surprise when he ended up playing for Everton and also had a very good career at West Brom.
But he was far from ordinary in my opinion.
I watched a lot of youth team games in those days when Steve Beaglehole was the coach and he looked a very good player.
Comfortable on the ball, good tackler, liked to get forward, very quick and must have played getting on for 50 first team games as a teenager before he was prematurely released...and I did blink.
Went to Torquay and then to Birmingham, Everton and West Brom.
Probably a late developer, but I thought the promise was always there.

RIP. Certainly surprised many an observer with the way his career progressed.
Always remember he scored the opener v Rotherham in an FA cup tie in 1987. Some way out, and it went in off both posts. Great goal.

Paul Holmes was a very young player in a very, very poor Rovers team. Absolute full credit to the kid that his career grew in the way that it did. Leaving that Rovers team may have been the best thing to happen to his early career.
Far too young to lose him though.
-
I always thought that he was released to keep Mick Stead in a job, Cusack’s player coach or whatever he was.
-
Good player Paul was. Surprised when he moved to Torquay, as thought he had a future with the likes of Rufus and Ranks etc. My age too. Much too young. Sad day. RIP
-
I was quite young when he was with us so don't remember him as well as some will, but it is a name I recognise. Young to pass away. RIP. My condolences to his family and friends.
