Title: D-Day anniversary
Post by: Branton Red on June 05, 2024, 10:00:09 pm
What an extraordinary generation of ordinary people our immediate ancestors were/are.

Where would we/Europe/the world be now if they hadn't firstly stood up to an immense and powerful evil and finally, with the help of friends and allies, defeated it?

It doesn't bear thinking about.

So true and we owe them so much.
Well said Branton.

They are in our thoughts a great deal Branton and always try to pay homage to them at various dedicated museums etc on our travels.

Agreed, subsequent generations have been very lucky

I see the British paras were made the show passports to the beaurocratic EU frogs yesterday.

They actually had trestle tables with laptops waiting for them in the middle of a field.

Imagine the insult, and the Irony!

The joys of Brexit that all the people moaning about this probably voted for.

Totally agree about the recognition of the DDay veterans and all others who fought in the war.
Not forgetting as is often the case those who fought in the jungles of Burmha against the Japanese which included my Wifes Dad, The Forgotten War

Those commemorations today were breathtaking. The whole thing made me emotional. I felt so proud of those veterans being honoured, and so grateful for those that gave their lives.

A special mention also to all the armed forces, the musicians, the singers, the dancers, and all the readers, that put on such a magnificent, moving tribute.

Me too SS, and to think they will all be passed soon, it makes you hope that we will all remember once they’re gone.

Almost unthinkable what they were faced with.

I watched a bit at lunchtime and I'm not ashamed to say I cried. The debt we owe them.

Without making a political point, I thought Biden gave a tremendous speech. Exactly the right balance of humble praise & thanks to the vets, and a reminder that authoritarianism has to be faced down again in this generation. Precisely what I'd want to hear from an American president.

Shame the French decided to make 'political postures" by setting up passport control in the middle of a field in the middle of D Day Remembrance Celebrations

Not really, the UK has never been in the schengen area and has always had to show passports, word has it the Para’s asked to have their passports checked so they could be stamped as a memento of the day

Let me get this straight,

So you assumed that on a solemn occasion such as this, it was appropriate for a fussy and officious country to be seen to be checking passports, but not just of anyone but of the troops of a nation that helped to liberate them from an evil dictator.

And then you use it for political point scoring,

You sir, are absolutely barking!

So important , so huge an event , we can only guess what the outcome might have been had "we" not Won

The people who took part in ANY part of D day be it planning, logistics , weather forecasting etc etc and all our Service Men and women deserve our utmost respect * now and forever.

Let's face it without them I might not be here or typing this in German. Charles as he read his Speech had a memorial behind him with names and ages on it. Almost every one in their 20s. They would have had EVERYTHING to live for and some drowned as their craft stopped in deep water and on orders they jumped off and were drowned as their kit was too heavy and they simply couldn't stay afloat. Some walked into a hail of bullets.

True heros every single one and in 5 years time most will have died. My total respect.

* Thanks Sunak for baling out early.

You let those people down and most of the nation won't forget.

You wanted kids to serve their Country for a year via National Service , but in the service of the Country YOU couldn't manage a full day

Hang your head in shame

We visited the memorial last year, it is so moving walking amongst the columns with thousands of names and ages of the dead

Well said, we owe them so much, it's a shame Sunak doesn't share the same veiw.

As an aside, do you know what the D in D day stands for?

I didn't. Apparently it's D for day. So D day is Day Day... Probably best to stick with D Day then

I can't imagine why Sunak felt the need to leave early.

How could he not realise how disrespectful it is not to attend such a solemn event as this.

The president of the United States was there. For goodness sake the chancellor of Germany was there.

And the UK? ... Cameron...

I mean how? What was Sunak thinking?

Apparently in his diary, he was going to give it a miss altogether. It's embarrassing.

Because being ‘British’ for him evolves around Westminster, the Capital, having more money than most high street shops put together & once he’s no longer the Prime Minister, will spend more days away from the UK than in it.

In other words, he’s not ‘British’ in the ‘true sense’ of the meaning.

So a fussy and officious country.
Imagine stereotyping about Italy like that?
Somebody might get a little hot under the collar and go redish gammon in the face.

Have you thought that 52% is the reason this "fussy" country applied the rules to non EU citizens?
Thanks for that Brexiteers
