Our last ‘friendly’ At New York stadium 3rd August.
-
South Yorkshire police will be delighted
-
Don't know how I feel about this. Going there to celebrate a Rotherham club legend because he now plays for us? Not for me that.
-
Nope celebrate 10th August who ever we play
-

I'm going there to watch my club against our rivals because we missed out on that for the new season.
Hoping we take a few to get the old vocal chords in shape
-
Apologies for sounding naive, but does this mean Wood is playing for Rovers in the testimonial with the Rotherham fans cheering him on?
Or does it mean he temporarily plays for Rotherham so they can celebrate him as "one of their own"?
-
Might play a half for each side.
-
A superb professional over a long period who has served South Yorkshire football with pride and no little success and deserves a great testimonial match.
One game to set aside tribal thoughts and recognise a player who has always made the best of his ability and has represented the sides he has played for with distinction including us.

With all due respect selby I think you’re being a tad naive if you think ‘tribal thoughts’ will be forgotten about & nothing but applause will ring out at The New York Stadium whoever shirt Woody wears or indeed ‘shares’.
I can already picture the ‘Burberry Brigade’ (on both terraces) rubbing their hands with glee as they practise their vitriolic chants of ‘Paedo’s’ & ‘Gypo’s’.
Someone who is very short sighted has thought this one up.
-
How can a player who is still playing have a testimonial?
That has never made sense to me.
Even more so when we are hoping he captains us to winning the L2 title....so far from past it!
Fair enough have a friendly against Rotherham but don't sell it as a testimonial.
-
Absolutely bizarre this one.
Like someone has already said, who's he going to play for ?!
Nothing friendly about it either.
Giving this one a wide berth
-
Don't you have to play for 10 years for the same team?
Only saving grace we're not in the same league next year.
-
A sad reflection on society if a testimonial causes crowd trouble.
-
Wood's been a great professional who well deserves a testimonial, BUT he's still a massive part of our team and will be playing in a team pushing for promotion next year - even for a friendly he shouldn't be pulling on the shirt of another team, especially one of our biggest rivals.
As others have said this is a great friendly and a good way to get the blood pumping ahead of the season, it's probably not the right time / way for Wood's testimonial as a current player of ours, but hope we do find a way to recognise his longevity and commitment and service to clubs across South Yorks (and Scunny) when the time is right.
-
Well it's a sad reflection on both sets of fans if they can't enjoy celebrating the past and existing career of a totally committed player for both our clubs without having to resort to vitriol and violence. Richard and his family deserve better.
-
I'd love to think that all fans of both clubs will put aside their differences for this game and celebrate Woody's career.
But I've seen the vitriol and spite expressed by some fans attending this fixture in the past and I'm afraid I have a bad feeling about it.
I truly hope I'm wrong.
-
Can see the headline now.
Doncaster rovers captain Richard Wood picks up a long term injury whilst wearing the shirt of rotherham against his current club in a meaningless game that could of been played when he retires within the next couple of years after young loanee mis-times a challenge in only his 1st game in a rovers shirt.
Young loanee not off to the best start with his teammates or fans.

Who else is going to give him a testimonial apart from Rotherham? It might have been a ‘sweetener’ agreed when he signed up for us. It’ll be a decent workout for some of the players against a higher division side. I’m sure the fans will be able to put there differences aside for the occasion, Rotherham haven’t got many hooligans anyway, a bit like Sutton!

-
Friendly against Rotherham, a local club in a higher division, I totally agree to.
Calling it a testimonial, nope not for me.
-
This is all a bit cringe. Call it the Richard Wood derby fine, but a testimonial like he's a legend of both clubs like a Derek Dooley thing, please. He's played for Rotherham for 9 season not 10 and played for us one and not achieved a promotion. Shall we clap in the 9th minute because he's got 9 stitches on his forehead?
-
Not sure he can handle Ironside going to be a tough game for him
-
Why didn’t Rotherham give him a testimonial when he was there?
-
Throw Steve Evans into the mix as well. Not sure this is the brightest idea.
-
Why didn’t Rotherham give him a testimonial when he was there?
I'm sure it's always been you have to play for the same team for 10 years. Obviously rarely happens these days

And fell out with the last manager in a big way.

Christ forgot about that Kitson.
This has got to be the most bizarre pre season "friendly" since real sociedad.
Hope SYP are prepared for it.
-
If anyone is wondering, a recent interview confirms he'll be playing for Rovers.

I notice half our squad were sharing details about this on Instagram yesterday.
It screams of terrible ticket sales.
I still do not agree with our captain going there for a love in whilst still playing, it’s just weird and poor ticket sales would indicate I’m not alone.
-
Role on Accrington at home. Get this farce out the way.
-
A sad reflection that a game organised to mark the career endeavours of Woody should attract such antagonisms.
-
Rotherham v Doncaster is never a friendly so let’s hope we don’t get injuries that all we want out of this game.
-
Feels like an awkward, muddled event. A large proportion of our fans hate Rotherham. It’s not a testimonial because he doesn’t play for Rotherham. I don’t want them cheering one of our players.
Honestly never had such a weird feeling about essentially a friendly game of football.
-
All the players were told to promote it on their Instagram's and now GM has made a rallying cry on Twitter for Rovers fans to get down there. Ticket sales must be low.
-
I think we have to be a little selfless on this and consider Wood afterall, who no doubt has had a big say in this and deserves a decent occasion for his service to the game.
We don't know yet how both teams intend to approach this. Neither will want a blood and thunder local derby. A bit of common sense has to apply.
At some point, I guess Wood will be subbed so he can receive the applause from both sets of fans.
-
I'm going to this one purely because if we win I want to be there  I think I can only remember 2 away wins in my 40+ years of going, 1986 at Millmoor (3-2) & 4-0 a the Don Valley under S'OD

He simply shouldn't participate - just imagine he gets injured --
at least he would have time to check the money donated for rare fifty pence coins

Am I missing something, why shouldn't he participate in a game for the club he plays for? It's a friendly game with a nod to a player who has played for both teams, I struggle to see why people have an issue with that? If the home fans want to applaud him etc fine.

put simply there are a lot of hindsight posters on here - full stop - "risk is risk" lest we forget Doncaster v Newcastle was an alleged friendly shame nobody told Mitlovic who bagged "three scalps"
-
I personally hope he plays a half for each team. It's his testimonial for his time at Rotherham and would allow Rotherham fans to say goodbye, which they never got first time round.
I also hope both teams sets of idiots stay away and let this be a celebration of a class players career, rather than what this game usually ends up as.
-
Hear! Hear! German! Of course he has to play. A testimonial and the star shouldn't play? What sort of idiot thought up that one?!

If he plays half for Rotherham he can stay there for me. Either play for this football club or don’t. Testimonials are for the end of your career.
-
He’s not playing for Rotherham on Saturday. He is only playing for Rovers.
-
I like wood, I really do, and we need him at the minute.
BUT I'm sorry, he has played 20 odd games for Donny, why are we putting out a rallying call to sell tickets for this game. Its a friendly. The fact they have guised it as testimonial is a bad call by all parties, he should have that when he retires and we wouldn't be involved!
This is a friendly, no more no less, and aparantley they have a friendly on Friday so won't be full team.
Overall a poor call IMO.

You want our captain and defensive main man to play 45 minutes for another team in our LAST friendly before the season starts?
Incredible

This. Service to football makes me laugh. Every kids dream to be a footballer and get paid to do it.
-
According to their website they play Grimsby tonight and us on Saturday there is no mention of a game on Friday

Only for the fans.. I doubt the players these days have such partisan rivalries..
-
Having a testimonial for a team you used to play for, but playing for the opposition who you've only played 20-odd times for is just weird. But then it would've been even more weird if he'd gone off and played a testimonial for Rotherham in pre-season, against us or anyone else. Feels like it would've been better saved for when he retires.
I'm sorry, but as much as I support Wood as a Rovers player, think he seems like a good guy, and want him to succeed in a Rovers shirt, I'm not that sentimental about him or his time at Rotherham in the slightest. He's effectively played half a season for us so it's not as if he's some kind of legend here at this point.
That's why this friendly interests me just about as much as any other preseason game, which is very little. Like Padge said, get this oddity out of the way and roll on Accy.

It's not a testimonial!
He wasn't there long enough !
-
This is a very odd choice of friendly/ testimonial and as mentioned earlier I have a bad feeling about it.
For those posters who feel it’s a sad reflection that this fixture attracts such ‘antagonisms’, I can only say they are out of touch with how this fixture plays out these days. Out of touch with reality in fact.
Like others, I hope it all goes well and Woody gets his adulation from the Millers fans and Rovers fans in equal measure, but I find the whole thing bizarre and a bad idea.
-

GM said in one of latest interviews that they have a game on the Friday
-
Crikey some of the posts on here are crazy
It’s just a pre season friendly.
It just happens to be a testimonial for Woody
What’s the problem.
It’s only a few of our fans trying to make out its some sort of tribal war.
Get a grip.
Oh and Woody won’t be playing for Rotherham as he is a Rovers player
It’s a proper match not some Sunday afternoon Charity game.

Todays starting XI
COYR
-
That's very good that Tom is starting. Less good that Close isn't in the squad. Hope Clifton and Westbrooke can get some decent minutes.
-
No sign of miller
-
Lawlor in goal ?
No Miller ?
-
Rotherham played a private friendly against a Championship side yesterday and fielded a strong side none playing or in squad today
-
If that is the case then it seems odd that we are playing a very low key testimonial type game against a weakened side just one week before the big kick off.
-
Concourse is bouncing..
-
Interesting that all the starting 11 except Gibson were at the club last season

Nice touch, that every rovers player has the number 6 on his back
-
Interesting that GM's gone for Lawlor in the last game before the big KO.
It looks like he's not made his mind up on which keeper will be No 1. I assume both keepers will maybe get 45 minutes each today.
I wonder if the Boro game influenced GM's opinion, or maybe Lawlor's looked better in training.
-
Stewards have decided they are gonna have a busy afternoon....
-
HT 0-0
-
Sharman-Lowe on and Woody making way for McGrath.
-
Did Lawlor have anything to do in that first half?
-
First ten minutes a bit dicky with Lawlor making a good save and a free kick hitting the cross bar.
As they settled down and came into the game Hurst, Ironside, and Broadbent came into the game Hurst having a good finish chalked off for offside, nothing between the two sides but a decent work out up to half time.
Much the same in the first few minutes of the second half with both sides bringing on a couple of subs.
-
So, have Rotherham put out a weakened team or not then selby?
-
No I don't think so Hound but as the game has progressed both sides have brought a number on, after the first ten minutes or so we have looked as good as them and have shown up well, but both sides are hardly going at it and goalmouth action has been in short supply at both ends.
-
Why did Wood go off at half time? I feel like he hasn’t been getting many minutes
-

I would imagine the club are managing his game time along with his training regime. for a player of his age i'd say its a good strategy, going into the new season.
Plus it was nice to give him the centre stage whilst he could still walk off and appreciate it.
-
So, have Rotherham put out a weakened team or not then selby?
Squad was split as we played Sheffield Wednesday in a behind closed door friendly yesterday (also finished nil nil). So, yes, a weakened team which I find strange so close to the season starting. Obviously it's guess work as we've signed 13 new players but by my reckoning five, possibly six, of today's starting eleven might start against Exeter next week.
The substitutions today were academy lads.
-
Who was the trialist keeper Grumps ?
-
Surprisingly low attendance from the Rotherham fans, I thought Wood was meant to be their legend??
-
What was the attendance?
-
4700 or something
I think about 700 from Donny
-
Not too bad then really.
-
Not great either for a club legend.
-
First sight of the new signings I’ve had. Can’t really judge anybody on that game. Nothing much happened. Neither side trying their hardest obviously.
I rarely bother with friendlies but hadn’t been to a game at this ground so I went. Roll on proper games.
-
Very drab game really, hardly anything to raise the temperature. Seemed to take us a good 15 mins before we got any passing going plus everything seemed very slow. Not untypical that Rotherham only looked dangerous from crosses and set pieces whilst we looked more pleasing on the eye when we got the ball down. Lawlor made a really good reaction save early on but flapped at a couple of crosses, electing to punch, which we expect anyway.
Hurst again was out most likely player and from where I was sat in the Rotherham end (Yuk) he might have been unlucky to be given offside when scoring.
Gibson looked a bit sloppy again. Sbarra looked lively when he came on. Clifton hardly got a touch so difficult to see what he was about. Westbrooke looked comfortable when he came on, Yeboah looked weak but, neither side broke much sweat. Nothing really learned from this outing.
-
I thought Gibson was good Baz actually. Good movement and good touch. Hurst, Gibson, molyneux will kill teams in league 2.
-
Who was the trialist keeper Grumps ?
Honestly no idea Roversdude. For some reason, that I've never understood, we only ever call them "Trialist". And if there's two we get "Trialist A" and "Trialist B"!
At first I thought it was Jamal Blackman (again). There's nothing to choose between our two keepers (Phillips and Dawson). Both are ok league 1 keepers but both look poor when judged against Viktor Johansson. So any new keeper will presumably be a young understudy.
-
I thought Gibson was good Baz actually. Good movement and good touch. Hurst, Gibson, molyneux will kill teams in league 2.
I might be a bit unfair but, he and Hurst kept interchanging. He had a couple of runs but he just doesn't seem as determined as Hurst to penetrate and hurt the opposition.
-
Not seen any friendlies but looking forward to seeing Hurst next week- it sounds like he has been transformed
-

Same. I watched the Hull game online and his pressing got us two of the goals and sounds like it created us chances today too.
-
Well then what was all that fuss about when this fixture was announced?
This was like any other pre season match.
Really don’t understand all the antagonism towards this match before we played.
I notice all those who made a song & dance about it have not said a word.
It was a great success, no bother and a great day for Woody with a decent pay day for him. A decent crowd of just under 5.000 which is good for a pre season friendly.
If it hadn’t been his testimonial I suspect the crowd would have been only around 3.000.
Those that said it was a poor turn out are on a different planet to me.
How many did you expect to turn out in a friendly at peak holiday time?
A good work out for our lads and good to see Harry Clifton get some mins on the pitch before the big KO next week.
We more than held our own I thought and another clean sheet is no bad thing. Only Boro have scored against us.
Roll on next Sat as we embark on what I am 99% certain will be a promotion season and I would give us an 80% on us being Champions.
My full predicted league table will follow this next week.
-
I enjoyed the day in their hospitality, several ex Rotherham players guest speaking with some great tales and anecdotes of Woody. After the match he came in and did a Q and A session then had some free speech, be under no illusions about how much today meant to him, and the "great support" in his words from the Rovers fans. Thoroughly enjoyable day and my mate won Woody's boots in the raffle to top it off.
RTID
-
Great info Butchers and I’m glad you had such a great day.
Those hospitality days can be great fun.
I hope Woody has another pair of boots for next weekend.
-
We are improved on last season, which is the aim of the club, a deeper squad and more tallented.
What we need now is the confidence to display that talent and the organisation and tactics to get the best out of the players from the off.
We have had a good preseason against teams higher in the pecking order, and we have looked a class above the teams we would be expected to do so.
What we will need to do is match the determination teams show in our division, the teams that do that with the better class players always do well, but its not easy, teams like Portsmouth Derby, Bradford etc. have failed in that respect on more than one occasion and have took years to full fill their promise and move up the leagues because of lack of attitude and commitment not skill.
We need to be on both, time will tell if we are the real thing, I hope and think we can be.

Totally agree with all that Selby. The majority of this squad set high standards for themselves in the second half of last season. They must set off with the same determination. Every tackle, every pass, every goal and every point matter. Trying to coast through games just won't wash. I hope McCann has set some stiff targets.
-
I see Evans said post match said he thought for short spells Rotherham were 'exceptional'. Crikey, they definitely started the stronger but after that they were dire for the most part. Give me some on the deck football any day of the week.

I’d forgotten he was there now - I hope no one was rude to him on such an amicable occasion!
