How are we going to do, formation , player changes
-
Depends if we wake up from the long sleep.
-
Cole palmer, toney and Watkins, Mainoo, for Kane, foden, Arnold, saka.
-
Either of these.
No 1 formation ) with a flat back 4 so I would go with:
Pickford
Walker. Stones. Guehu. Trippier.
Rice. Bellingham
Saka. Foden. Gordon.
Kane. Or Watkins
If Kane is not 100% fit give Watkins a start.
Formation no 2 with wing back as follows:
Pickford
Walker Stones. Guehu.
T.A.A. Trippier
Rice.
Palmer. Bellingham. Gordon.
Kane. Or Watkins.
That means leaving out Foden. Or could leave out Bellingham of course & Saka but for crying out loud play round pegs in round holes and if it means someone has to sit on the bench then so be it.
It is great to have like for like you can bring on during a game to rest players or players who can come on and change a game.
We have both.
GS has got to be brave and think outside the box and have plan A, plan B and a plan C if needed in a match.
He has a squad with some world class players & he needs to let them off their leads and go out and play as we know they can.
Let’s see what he does. Not holding my breath :chair: Really concerned after Fri that all is not well with the squad.
Gordon and Trippier are on the left side don’t know why it won’t put them there when I submit it :headbang:

Wouldnt mind that tbh.
-
We have to play Gordon imo because he is the only one who gives us left side balance.
Could put Saka on the left of course he is actually left footed would you believe.
Southgate really has to get a grip on this before we implode.
It’s not rocket science. There are about 15 million Football fans in England that can see what our Manager apparently can’t see.
Oh and tens of millions of others all over Europe who can see it also.
1) Square pegs in square holes or round ones in round holes.
2) Work rate needs to increased. Press the opposition high up the pitch.
3) Attack with pace and numbers. Get players into the box not 1 but 3
France do it, Germany do it Spain do it, etc etc.
Not difficult that is it. Football is very simple really. We have some serious attacking quality in this squad. If we can’t get them performing there has to be something very wrong with the Manager / coaching / tactics.
Why are we not doing it?
-
Imagine the tune someone like Pep could get out of out attacking players

He'd need 200 million though on that back 4

You talk about not putting square pegs in round holes but Saka has not played left forward in years (or possibly ever? Pretty sure he played left wing back at Arsenal when he broke through). Foden is also left footed but it’s not exactly working out for him there. I’d also say that Trippier isn’t a wing back so that would be another ill fitting position. Granted the make up of the squad wouldn’t make that position easy to fill.
I’d play:
Pickford
TAA Stones Guehi Gomez
Rice Wharton
Bellingham
Saka Kane Gordon
If we’re desperate to get TAA in let’s put him in a position he’s comfortable in. Gomez has deputised well at Liverpool at LB this year so I’d give him a chance. Gordon gets a go to try and stretch the opposition, whilst Wharton is the most natural fit into the “Phillips” role. Foden misses out but he can always make an impression as a sub.

Think Gallagher will start ahead of Trent. Rest the same and we will win 3-0.

I am an optimist by nature but I just can’t see it GazLaz.
Something has to change dramatically if that result is to happen
We have to play someone on the left who will give us that balance. For me Gordon is the best option.
-
To be honest, I couldn’t give a toss. Obscenely overpaid bunch of fancy dans.

I'm preparing myself for another Iceland type exit from the Euro's Campsall .
One of the less fancied teams on a free hit and nothing to lose mindset in the next stage is very much in play .
The players look bemused , confused with the confidence shot to shyte .
The more that emerges from the England camp since we arrived in Germany the more I believe another catastrophic tournament exit is likely .
The squad looks woefully unprepared , unbalanced and unorganised .
What ever you could point at Southgate with regard to tactical acumen or a timid mindset he's always been on top of the basics and created a superb culture .
I'll have no problem eating my words , I really hope I have to but I'm fearing the worst .
One of if not the worst side I've seen so far in this tournament is England .
We are stinking the place out .
-
Hopefully were fired up and take the big lesson to keep pushing and not try to play as a containing team.
I’d play the following but think as Gaz says likely only Gallagher to play ahead of Trent.
Pickford
Walker Stones Guehi Trippier
Bellingham Rice Foden
Saka Kane Gordon/Watkins
We should trust Foden and Bellingham to play as 8s and get the ball on the half turn. Then it’s about Saka and maybe Watkins from the left staying high and making the runs behind. Let Kane drop in as it’s what he does well.Watkins should try to emulate the Son role at Tottenham as starting wide left but getting in goal scoring positions. I think it would suit him.
For defence we just need to be higher up the pitch. Dropping so deep make it impossible to press and Kane isn’t the quickest so the pitch needs to be smaller. We’re fast at the back so agin it’s just been brave. At their clubs they’d all happily play much higher up the pitch against better teams than we play here.

Yep agree with all that as it’s what I am saying.
Team you picked, also yes that could work with Watkins out left. It needs to be a flexible formation.
But we need to press higher up the pitch and force mistakes. This is Serbia, Denmark and Slovenia in our group not France, Germany & Spain for heavens sake.
We need players overlapping down the flanks and we need to create 2 on 1 situations which so far we haven’t except maybe twice early in the 1st half with Saka on the right v Serbia.

Imagine the tune someone like Pep could get out of out attacking players
Or Klopp or I could name 3 dozen others including our own Grant McCann. Seriously he would get this lot playing.
Think you and me would get more out of them. :crying:
-
Oh and something else.
The players need to look as though they are interested because on Fri some of them didn’t. Now that really worries me.

Yep and it has to change on Tues because if we don’t get out of 1st gear with the hand brake on v Slovenia how are we going to suddenly going to turn into world beaters against the better teams.
Yes Tyke I can see us imploding v Romania, Turkey, Austria or whoever we might get in the last 16.

If you’re choosing the next manager a call has to be made to Klopp.
He wants to play attacking football is loved by the players and the fans which will mean him not been English won’t bother anyone as much. International management might suit his work life balance after Liverpool too.
Just seems a perfect fit

We think alike. He would be my 1st choice. We would be both European and World Champions NOW if he had been England manager in the last two tournaments imo.
-
My main thought is just a, probably forlorn, hope of seeing an entertaining game.
The first 2 matches were drearily awful.
I'd even settle for mildly diverting.
-
My pick would be John Coleman the ex Accrington manager, he worked miracles with not a lot for years

That will be entertaining Brian.
He was not one for the purist was he but yes he has worked miracles at Accrington over many years before they sacked him last season.
What Southgate is doing with the cream of English footballers is a dereliction of duty.
It must take some skill to get them to play with so much anxiety and fear.
Coleman would do a better job it’s almost impossible to play any worse than they did on Friday.
-
England will win with over 2.5 goals in the match
-
If you think Kane should be dropped you don’t know much about football.
If you don’t follow England don’t bring your negative energy here. Normal football fans enjoy watching their country play at these amazing tournaments. Your loss.
And if you think John Coleman should be next England manager, send me a bit of what you’re smoking because it must be good stuff.
-

Kane needs to be told to play as a centre forward & stop dropping into midfield. He hasnt got the energy to do both. He looks knackered to me so to rest him for the next game wouldnt be a bad thing.
France rested Mbappe (could have played with nose guard) & we have other options in Toney & Watkins. Thats why we took 3 forwards surely?

3 or 4 changes 3-0 win.

Personally I feel that Rice is better as the all action midfielder (like an Owen Bailey). I don’t think his vision and composure on the ball is good enough to be the deep holding midfielder, which is why Arteta put Jorginho (more of a Matthew Craig) next to him.
I was listening to Guillem Balague on 5 Live. He said we (England) don’t produce players like Kroos, Modric, Jorginho etc. I think either Wharton or Mainoo have what it takes and can offer us more positive possession. I don’t think Southgate has the balls to pick them because they are young.
I don’t think Bellingham is that player, which is reflected in where Ancelotti plays him for Madrid. But he is better than Foden for the no.10 position.
-
I'd go:
Pickford
Walker, Stones, Guehi, Trippier
Foden, Rice, Bellingham
Palmer, Kane, Gordon
However, I think Southgate will go with:
Pickford
Walker, Stones, Guehi, Trippier
Rice, Gallagher
Saka, Bellingham, Foden
Kane
-
No proper left back and Trippier is not the answer so try 3-5-2. Obvious subs available for every position. Give plenty of players a run out once qualification assured.
Pickford
Walker Stones Guehi
Saka Gallagher Rice Foden Gordon
Bellingham
Kane

Agree re the deep midfielder we just never have anyone who can do that. Carrick was probably the last but was severely underplayed.
That said if we don’t produce that type of player then we should concentrate less on dictating possession and more on playing quicker, pressing and attacking every chance we get.
At the moment we try to control the game but it just ends up the defenders passing it slowly to each other for a bit with no purpose.

Looks like Shaw is probably not going to play a game. Pathetic he took no other left back.

Madness… should have taken Chilwell, probs best left back available.

Another with a terrible injury record this season, although arguably would have been less of a risk than Shaw.

Chilwell is awful and should be nowhere near the England squad , been poor every time he’s played - we really are short of quality at left back can understand the logic behind trippier and he’s been ok this tournament it’s midfield we have been poor
-
I think he's not going to start Trent. Which will be good enough to make sure we win the game. Nothing against Trent but doesn't fit into this squad!
I'd like him to start Watkins with kane on from 60-70mins but don't think he will.
Will take our failing at another tournament unfortunately to see that Kane has lost his engine abit?? (Still a fantastic goalscorer, but England's style requires more work?(And runs))

Whilst i agree the midfield has been poor, the inbalance of having a right footed left back is plain to see.

I do think the expectations are above the realities as to how the England squad compares to other countries .It’s the way football is fed to the public in U.K. by Sky and pundits in general .Cable TV in Belgium where I live gives us access to Belgium , Germany ! France , Italy , Spain and most other EU top football. I think that U.K. confuses Kane’s success in Germany and Bellingham’s in Spain with National TEAM supremacy .So get behind them because the same pundits who were encouraging you to believe they were champions in all but name will now encourage you to destroy them in just the same way .ROVERS TID .
-
Just hoping it’s decent!, set off tomorrow morning for 2 nights in Cologne and have a ticket for the match.
Can see maybe Gordon starting, Foden dropping to a 10 and Jude dropping in with Rice. TAA dropped
-
Rice Wharton
Saka Bellingham Gordon
Kane
Foden and Kane doesn’t work. They occupy the same position on the pitch when left to do their default thing. Whereas Foden and Watkins would work better - impact sub duo.
Bellingham is wasted playing deeper. He’s a goalscorer.
Kane is not Haaland, and Rice isn’t Kroos.
You have to look at WHY these players do well for their club rather than just chuck them in and hope for the best.

In reply to the original post I think we’ll probably win vs Slovenia, whilst making hard work of it, playing not great; win a knockout round vs a lesser team, and first top team we play; France, germany, Spain, Portugal, Italy etc.. we’ll revert to negative type and go home. I’d love to be wrong but have a horrible feeling it’s all v predictable!
-
England will probably lose. The lack of any wish to actually try to play football will let them down. Hell I could stand on a field, turn round and pass back for 90 minutes, does that make me international standard? Apparently so, if they lack confidence in trying to beat an opponent then pack it in lads, you are not able to call yourself professionals.
-
It’s a qualifying match, and will be managed as such with England progressing.

Slovenia.
Such a rich history in European football.
I think we should err on the side of caution & play 5-4-1.
A draw should see us through to the heady heights of the knock out stages.

Let's hope he's in a position to come off the bench tomorrow.
