Title: One of many many reasons Billy is special for DRFC
Post by: Dutch Uncle on June 24, 2024, 08:07:29 pm
IIRC, in between Billy's season long loan for us in 2009-10 and signing for us near the end of the 2010 summer transfer window, Billy played (and scored) for the Blades in the League Cup. That would mean, as far as I can see, that Billy becomes the first player in our history to return to us three times, i.e. have four separate spells with the club.

Mark Wilson can’t be far off!

Mark Wilson can’t be far off!

I think that was only three spells, and FWIW he didn't actually play during his last very short contract in 2012-13

Edit: David Harle also had three spells with us.

If I’m being honest Dutch, it was a comment solely off the back of what ranks as the best cover by far of the many excellent covers that Glen and the team at Popular STAND produced. If anyone can post it on here, it’s a genuine great.

How many times did we sign Jack Ashurst?

How many times did we sign Jack Ashurst?

That is a really good question, because on the face of it he was here for 4 seasons from 1988-89 to 1991-92. But Tony Bluff's history book gives him three lines of data, one for the first two of those seasons, and one each for the last 2, thus suggesting three spells. However wiki does not have him playing for anyone else in between, and IIRC he was never on loan to us. So that sounds like just one spell, but why three lines of data?

Maybe the Red Baron can shed some light?

Edit: BTW I don't count a simple contract extension - e.g. as Luke Molyneux recently, as starting  a new spell at the club, IMHO the player needs to be somewhere else in between to be counted as a new spell. Otherwise how many spells would Copps have had with us

I remember the cover of a raise the roof mentioning bringing him back

I was out of the country from 1975-2013, and didn't start internet following until mid/late 1990's (Andrew Spier's old site - a god send for exiles), so I was out of the loop of what was happening.

I remember he wasn’t in the initial 1990/91 squad, I think he was signed only after Andy Holmes picked up a season ender a few weeks into the season.

Many thanks ldr & Ho

So to me it looks like Jack Ashurst did have three spells with us, albeit with small gaps between

I still make Billy the only one with three returns and four spells

This is the one I think

I always thought that referred to him appearing three times during a game and disappearing the rest of the time.

I always forget that he came back on loan in 2014.
