While we are still bored waiting for the new season, a quiz question requiring a little imagination:
Billy Sharp is one of only 5 players to play for Rovers who ...........................................
Finish the question and name the other 4 players
There are two main answers (and 8 players, there is no overlap) I am looking for, but they probably aren't the only possibilities. I can certainly think of a very contrived one.

ok the "contrived "is obviously John Ryan so it must be something
about age - making your debut for Rovers over "x" years say over 30 - playing only once etc --- did he even touch the ball - at least that's a start
-
Scored a hat trick for another team and played for rovers in the same season.??

Not what I was thinking of, although one main answer is to do with goals. Laurie Sheffield famously scored a hattrick on his debut for Norwich, but I am not able to check everyone. Might be more than five.. I am going back over all football league seasons since 1901-02. Good idea though.

None of my answers had anything to do with age.
The contrived one is 'one of 5 players to score 34 or more league goals for us in tier 2 (Bert Tindill, 100, Kit Lawlor 47, Billy Sharp 44, Ray Harrison 39, Alick Jeffrey 34). Contrived in that just take the top 5 scorers and see what the cut off number is.

Re-signed a decade after leaving?
-
Another interesting idea macho (not one I thought of, just like the hattrick thing from IDM)
I can think of Alan Warboys, Ian & Glyn Snodin, and Russ Wilcox, but then I am struggling so you might well be right. Maybe someone either side of WW2. Either way I am still looking for two other ideas, great idea though.

Is one of them, Billy Sharp is one of only 5 players to play for Rovers' whose initials are an abbreviation of the word bullshit (BS).
Ben Sheaf
Bert Shears
Ben Smith
Brian Stock
Billy Sharp

Shall I give you my initial reaction?

OK, a little clue. I will give you names of two of the 8 players concerned (not saying if they are in the same group of 4 or not)
John Marquis
Ernie Moss
-
Played for 10 or more different clubs in their career?

Another good idea but I think we have way more than 5 of those

OK, expanding the number of names a bit, two more of the eight are:
Tom Keetley
Richie Wellens
Getting a bit like Only Connect now - who is in which group

Yeah, when started to think about it,im sure your right that there will be quite a few.
-
Number of promotions on their CV?
-
Another good idea I haven't checked. Is it four Billy has had? Again it I think it likely we have had more than 5 but difficult to check. The two connections I have drawn were much easier to check.
-
Did they all leave Rovers to return to a club they'd played for before?

Another good idea and I can see where you are coming from with Ernie Moss, but no (might be a possible, some good ideas on this thread)

Ok, time for 2 more names. Don't forget there are two very differing groups connected by a totally different factor
Ben Whiteman
Kerry Dixon

Ok here are all the names in alphabetical order:
Kerry Dixon
Tom Keetley
John Marquis
Matt Mills
Ernie Moss
Tommy Tynan
Richie Wellens
Ben Whiteman
All you need to do is split them into 2 groups of 4 and find the connection for each group. Billy then fits in both groups.
Answers tomorrow morning if no-one gets there

Left us for 1Million+ and scored over 200 league goals in career?
-
Excellent LDR
League goals scored in England:
Tom Keetley 284 (180 for Rovers)
Tommy Tynan 257 (just 1 for Rovers)
Billy Sharp 249 (44 for Rovers and counting....)
Ernie Moss 245 (15 for Rovers)
Kerry Dixon 231 (3 for Rovers)
Peter Doherty scored more than 200 league goals, but that includes goals in Northern Ireland, he got either 197 or 198 (sources vary) in the English leagues
