Title: Ronaldo.
Post by: Colin C No.3 on July 01, 2024, 11:34:13 pm
For all his ice bath’s at 2.0a.m., his personal assistant, dietician,
chef, masseur & physical ‘guru’ that he has accumulated, swapped, built on & taken around the world with him (nice work if you can get it!) ultimately has that made him given the team’s & players he has spent his playing days with at Man Utd, Real Madrid, Juventus a ‘true giant’ in the pantheon of players like Pele, Maradona, Zidane & his ‘nemesis’ Messi.

I see a man in these Euro’s playing for himself with a manager who will never substitute him.

When he had the penalty saved against him tonight in normal time he looked a spent force.

He didn’t go on to impose himself when extra time came.

He scored one of the penalties to decide a game that could have gone either way.

I’d like to say (even though Portugal progress in the tournament) thanks for the memories Christian, but I can’t. In my mind he will not be remembered as one of the greatest footballers I have ever seen, but more of one of football’s ‘best’ Prima Donna’s.

1, he got substituted in the last game

2, of course he’s one of the greatest footballers you’ve ever seen.

The man scored more than a goal a game over 300 games at Madrid and has 130 international goals.

Useless.

Early on in July but the stupidest post of the month so far

One of the all-time greats but he’s finished now.

I’m not sure why they’ve even taken him. He doesn’t offer any leadership with his narcissism and childish antics.

Bizarre op, clearly one of the all time greats who's devoted everything to playing as long as he can, the emotion at missing the pen shows how much it still means to him, & getting himself back up to score in the shoot out deserves respect.
The only negative I would say about him is that he could be a better team player.

To be honest, I hate to watch Portugal because all I ever hear is Ronaldo this and Ronaldo that. And even if he spent the entire match on the bench the camera would still be 50% on him and 50% on the game. I was gutted that Portugal won (only through pens) and we will still keep hearing about him.

I thought his performance last night was embarrassing.

As the OP said, he looked like he was playing for himself, not the team.
Insisting on taking every direct free kick, no matter where from, and missing them all.
Greedily shooting at every opportunity, whether or not a team-mate was better placed.

Sobbing like a baby after his penalty was saved - did that display the right state of mind for him to tackle the period of extra time?

His days are gone and he shouldn't be playing for Portugal in this tournament.

Pancho, I agree with everything you say, and when he did have his childish meltdown all the team flocked round him and consoled him like they would a baby. I am sure he was not he only player who found the match hard but the others acted like adults. Teams have come and gone with the disappointment that all the players must have felt, but no-one carried on like he did, and worse still the camera followed his every movement and expression. He gets more camera time and mentions than the rest of the squad all put together. The sooner we see the back of him the better.

Don’t disagree with what he did or didn’t contribute but he was obviously of fairly sound mind because he slotted away his next penalty.

I don’t really have an issue with men crying like you appear to. He heaps the pressure of a nation on his own shoulders and was upset when he felt he had let his country down.

I don't have any issue 'per se' with men crying GazLaz, not at all.
But there's a time and a place, and last night, when the match was at such a crucial point, Ronaldo's sobbing would have worried me as a team-mate or coach.
Mental strength is vital on these big occasions and I would have subbed him at that point.

Granted, he scored in the shoot-out and credit due for that.
For his sake, thank heavens he didn't miss that one because he might have had a complete breakdown.

Every player in every squad went to the Euros with the hope of representing their country in the best possible way and maybe even winning the final. Ronaldo is an amazing player but I just wish commentators and cameras would focus less on him. Most players must feel equally pressurised/disappointed/gutted but conduct themselves with dignity.

100% this.

I'm sure he laps it up (can't help noticing how many times he looks up at the big screen) but this excessive attention does him no favours in my opinion.

I just do not like to watch him, there is no doubting his ability, but he’s not likeable at all.

Most players are all about themselves but he takes it too far - another player of a similar mindset but with way less talent is his teammate Fernandez.

This post has gone off on a tangent!
The opening post said Ronaldo won’t be remembered as one of the greatest players of all time which is obviously nonsense

Read the post again. I said he will not be remembered as one of the greatest players I have ever seen, and he won’t.

Are you counting penalties in those games GazLaz or just goals from open play?

graingrover. You forgot to mention we shared an abusive father & left home at the earliest possible opportunity…..lol.

On the topic of him crying, he spotted his mum in tears in the crowd then that set him off.

No doubt one of the best players ever.

However has always come across as a pretty selfish so and so.

He really does encapsulate the old saying ..
There’s no I in team but there’s definitely a ME.

Despite his perceived arrogance / selfishness Ronaldo is supposed to be a great philanthropist, investing millions in a range of good causes. Compare that to his rival Messi who doesn't even pay his tax!

They'll both leave a legacy in football terms that will last well beyond our lifetimes.

I don't mind Ronaldo personally, he's usually good value and is still an unbelievable talent. It's Bruno Fernandez that winds me up, with his permanent slapped-arse face, so I was wanted them to lose for that reason alone!

You would be well advised to shut up Coleman. That is completely unnecessary
