JT, Do you remember the aircraft that ended up on its nose while we watching at halftime. The first out of the airport's fire engine and first in the cockpit was a dog !

Here's a rare pic of Belle Vue looking South, with Doncaster United's airport ground in the background to the right.
-
That pic really shows how vast the playing surface was at times. A fully developed Belle Vue would have been huge when you think about it.
-
I often think of how great it would have been to develop Belle Vue.

Me too, always did. Was there some discussion to rebuild there when the dome went up?
Great pitch, IMHO.

The best league pitch in the country back then

It was indeed.
When a pass was wizzed on the floor you always knew it wasn’t going to bobble or deviate.
-
Gordon Foster was a great groundsman.

Wow,they was even doing weed and window shopping for women in 1934!

Dead right, BB. Look at how Barnsley have developed Oakwell into a really good stadium.
-
Wasn't there a problem with subsidence at Belle Vue. On the pop side. Don't think if I recall Correctly but that was why they couldn't develop further. Regards Ray
-
The subsidence was why the popular stand was taken down and raise the roof happened. Sad really as the space to develop Belle Vue was there…

I once had the pleasure of speaking to a former Director, who sat on the Board during the early/mid 80s, at a friends social event. As someone who attended regularly during that time I did ask, amongst many things, what the plan was for BV at that time. The response I got was that they were very much open to trying to find a way with DMBC to do something. He spoke very deeply about how the Bradford and Hillsborough tragedies complicated matters to an unworkable point at that time, given the budget limits of both club and council.
