Having seen the teams today GM is obviously mixing it up to get maximum minutes into the lads. Also fair play to him for putting a strong team out at Spennymoor.
I'm hoping Tuesday will be first look at what we could expect first team to be. See if change of shape, see if Sharp and Joe both play, see what keeper starts.
Looking forward to it now.
-
I think as a general rule Ironside and Sharp won’t play together. Unless we’re desperate for a goal camped in the opposition half.
-
The beauty of these friendlies is assessing who's looking 'sharp' and pushing for a starting spot when there's competition for places. Also looking at the combinations that work well where an understanding is developing between players.
I wouldn't like to call the team or shape that lines up v Acceington.
There maybe some big clues in the next two friendlies v higher opposition. Let's also remember the finishers are just as important as the starters. If only Southgate saw it that way!!
-
The revelation is Hurst .He has come out of the blocks like a rocket and is linking well with Gibson ,it seems ,in the first two outings .
-
Not only that, Graing, but he’s changed roles slightly, moving inside and playing more of an attacking midfielder, rather than a winger.
FairPlay to Grant and the coaches for that little tweak. That position is now between Sbarra and him?
-
Saw my hull city supporting mate yesterday, he reckons hull have sold out the initial away allocation and requested more tickets

I think if you look back at GM first stint with us he kept using the same players in the warm-ups, this has to be better.
-
It will be interesting to see how McCann approaches these next two friendlies. I wonder if he'll play two XIs , 45 mins each looking for higher intensity, or maybe 60 mins for the starting XI, with the reverse on Saturday.
You wonder how near he is to knowing his probable starting XI.
Either way, we could do with Anderson shaking off his dodgy back very soon. We wouldn't want Wood playing 90 mins in each of the remaining friendlies. I'm sure Olowu will play a big part anyway. I expect him to push having a strong finish to the end of last season in his cameo appearances.

To date all the good work in his career with us has been in a very defined area, on left outside box and then coming in to the box from the left. Interesting to see if he can adapt to being more central and staying central.

It's only a few weeks ago I got mocked on here for saying we needed another senior/top CB. Clear as day to me.

Apparently Hull are literally scratching around for a team for Tuesday. Lots of players from last season have left and they’ve a few injuries included TLT.

They got mullered at Fenerbace recently. Probably slightly undercooked at the mo but, I'm more bothered about us and our preparations.

If this is true, Rovers are 2.85/1 on Betfair Exchange to win tonight.
A massive £75 has been wagered on our match thus far lol.
-
Not bothered about result - I just don’t want any injuries!
-
Too right, its all about the development of the squad. With games against teams like this i'd imagine GM will be now looking at what relationships players are creating as they go into games, what's working and what's not. Some positional changes may occur or develop that will make the whole sum stronger than its constituent parts.
Interesting to see how we line up as to some clues to what GM has in mind.
-
Imagine betting on a friendly, where neither team really cares about the result, insane
-
You can bet on the Worksop Town v Pontefract Collieries friendly tonight. A truly impressive £3 has been wagered on that game.
-
Jones and Lawlor both on bench, not sure what is happening there. Anderson, Close and Westbrooke out again. Wood on bench, so assume Bailey is playing CB with Olowu?

McGrath starting?
-
Yes, so he is. That makes sense now!
-
Midfield three of Bailey and Broadbent, with Hurst behind Ironside.
-
Captain Bailey.....can see that being the future

Still no sign of Harry Clifton
-
Hope it is just precautionary but you couldn't really make it up could you?
His last three seasons have seen him play 44, 57 and 46 games. Signs for us...injured in his very first pre-season...
-
Rovers 1 up. Hurst robs Hull defender and finishes with a delicate chip over the Hull keeper.
-
2 nil Ironside
-
I haven't seen a team as bad as Hull for many years. They are dreadful.
-
Lets not get carried away, its only hull's academy.
-
I haven't seen a team as bad as Hull for many years. They are dreadful.
Is that because you’ve been covering your eyes watching us at various points over the last 5 seasons?
-
Good half that. I expect plenty of half time changes
-
Not all academy but some young lads, definitely.
Still, we’re very comfortable and no injuries
-
Some good points and points to work on. Very good press from us, very high up - caught them out twice. Bit too aggressive at times, giving away unnecessary fouls. We've also looked susceptible to give it away at the back on a couple of occasions but McGrath hasn't put a foot wrong. Hurst and Gibson very good.
-
Hull goalkeeper must be leading the possession stats.
-
Saw my hull city supporting mate yesterday, he reckons hull have sold out the initial away allocation and requested more tickets

Is that because you’ve been covering your eyes watching us at various points over the last 5 seasons?
I'm not sure we have played that bad over the last 5 seasons..even under Schofield. The way they pass the ball about at the back they are an accident waiting to happen.......and it cost them 2 goals and it could have been more.
That's not taking anything away from our lads who have really good.
-
3-0 Bailey sweeps it in after Sterry pulls it back

Not bad. They have the two blocks to the right of the goal as you look at it
-
4-0. Bailey heads in from a great ball from Molyneux
-
This team now is a typical mccan goals from everywhere team!!!!! You score 3, we'll score 4!!!!!

I hope this is his year, if it's not then midfield is a problem. 2 weeks to the season starting and close/Westbrook remain out that's a worry.
But, good win tonight and it feels to me the team is a team. We are in a good place with consistency going in to this season.

My MOTM, he was brilliant. Looked a completely different player.

In his three seasons with us, Close has started respectively 14, 34 and 18 league games. Less than half of league games during his entire time at Rovers.
Westbrooke only 22 league starts, albeit over shorter period.
-
He did do very well, he kept the ball and rovers moving, he was also a good out ball for the defence, often getting it in tight spaces.
The only thing to say was it was against a weak young side in the first half, but good signs from him.

Hull fan on there over-reacting maybe a little:
"The team that took the field representing Hull City for the first hour must have been the weakest side we have ever put out against league oppositon in our history, friendly or no friendly."
-
If I were a Hullfan i’d be worried, they couldn’t handle our energy and press, Broadbent was excellent, Hurst looks hungry and Sbarra looks an upgrade on Rowe
-
We looked very, very good. So fit and strong all of them.
But Jesus Nixon looked like a different player!
Massive selection headaches incoming for McCann, what a squad we now have.
-
Broadbent was a different player to the one we saw last season. Only one game but he has come on in leaps and bounds. Definitely starting X1 material.
-

They should be worried if they didn't play their under 21s.
-
Their u21s /academy play tomorrow at North Ferriby
-
Broadbent looked quality, really put himself about in the first 30mins and his vision and distribution through the game was great. Couple of nervy moments but they were the making of others.
McGrath I thought looked really good at the back. Strong, composed and has a great switch on him.
Gibson looks like he will be a good signing for us as did Sbarra.
Joe Ironside is just Joe and Bailey is just Bailey, no more need be said.
Hurst outshone them all though. That is the player we saw glimpses of before and what a pre-season he is having.
The young keeper looked comfortable on the ball.
One thing I noticed that did concern me, and it was evident within 2minutes of the change, Lawlor sits very very deep which our lads won't be used to now having half a season of TLT. When Hull keeper had the ball Lawlor was on edge of his 18 yard box. There was a BIG void between him and defence when they pushed up so if he ends up playing at times we will be susceptible to ball over the top, especially if Olowu isn't on the pitch.
Overall great performance regardless of opposition team selection. They were all first team players according to Hull website, by the way they only list 20 first team players and 3 of them are keepers?! Probably time for Hull fans to worry???
-
Sorry guys, but I don’t get the love-in with Broadbent. He was ok but not much more than that. Bailey was the man tonight, without question. Noticeably, when he was subbed off, the organisation went with him.
Making lots of subs is always difficult, but we noticeably started chasing about like headless chickens. We still need someone in that boiler room or we’ll get found out.
Lots of good positive things all over the pitch, but the opposition was questionable, it has to be said.
Bailey my motm, despite Hurst doing well in his new position.
Ironside held it all together up top.
Gibson has a touch of class about him.
McGrath definately worth a mention, whilst Olowu had a somewhat inconsistent evening.
Nixon looked rapid after he came on as did Yeboah, I mean grease lightning was left in his wake, but he is a bit raw.
Lots to be pleased about, but that could all change on Saturday (if Boro bring their A game).
-
Forget about trying to work out how young/inexperienced Hull might have been. They were fit, very good technically but, so we're we and better at it.
That was very impressive from Rovers. The intensity, the quick passing, the understanding, running off the ball, the quality of balls into the box, the finishing were all there to see.
Hurst confirmed he's really showing what a player he can be in the final third. He should be in double figures at least on that showing.
Broadbent. What an improvement. Looks like he might afterall become that player that McCann said he could. For the most part, being very disciplined holding the midfield ground, keeping it simple but also playing a couple of sublime first time passes both long and short. Pass completion rate must have been high.
Bailey. Given the licence to pick and choose his runs forward because of Broadbent, and those two complimented each other very well. Bailey's finishes tonight were exceptional by their simplicity and timing.
All the new lads look like they have something to offer giving us bags of options. Very hard to pick out our strongest XI.
Overall, the quality of the passing and movement was very good tonight. Every player seemed to know their purpose and put a shift in.
Of course, we will come across more physical opposition including those who'll lump it forward but no reason to believe we can't cope with that too.
-
Broadbent has looked good in that role all preseason to be fair - bigger test Saturday
-
A very impressive run out against a poor Hull side. Grant must be very much delighted with that. We kept the intensity up and looked very fit. Sbarra and Yeboah both look like absolute speed merchants. I mistook Sbarra in the warm up for a mascot! He looks about 4'11" and 9 years old. Plays like he's The Flash. I thought him giving the Hull defence a torrid time actually gave Billy some extra space at times. That could be something interesting to keep an eye out for this season.

Doesn’t look so bad on the missing quarter but potentially they won’t be starting against Accrington.
McCann said: "I just want to get them back. I think Ben and Harry will be on the grass on Thursday to start their rehab and come back to fitness. Zain is probably a few days after that.
"Tom will have an injection in his back just to settle the pain which I imagine will take a week to ten days to settle down so once they come back we feel like we're strong."
-
We played ok but it wasn’t against their first team was it. Lots of positives but can’t read much into friendlies.

I’d say 10 out of that 11 will start against Accrington.
Wood will come in for one of Olowu or McGrath.
Sbarra looked excellent but can’t drop Hurst on this form.
Ironside looked really good. Sharp will come off the bench.
I thought we were more than ok. Hull put their first team on at 60 mins - we didn’t concede and kept creating chances.
-
Looks like a team to me that is gelling very quickly.
Think we should hit the ground running this season.
Kyle Hurst, what can I say. He looks like a player doesn’t he.
Confidence is oozing.
-
We played ok but it wasn%u2019t against their first team was it. Lots of positives but can%u2019t read much into friendlies.
The fact it wasn%u2019t Hull%u2019s first team is as irrelevant as the scoreline. More minutes in the players legs but what can be taken is that they are playing as a team, every player knew what to do and we can see what the style of play we are adopting, high energy, high press and the players look fit and strong enough to do it, I thought we were far better than ok
-
Any links to the goals?
-
Yes, and another pleasing thing I noted from last night was Bailey calling the press. You could hear him issuing instructions to his team mates to push at certain times, poised like a praying mantis. He trusts Braodbent to sit while he goes forraging and, as he says in his post match interview is getting the confidence to make those late runs into the box. Both his finishes last night were top draw.
Of course, we need to see more before getting carried away but those two are shaping up to be a really good partnb3rship in midfield, plus if Clifton does whar is says on the tin, we have a bit of depth plus Flint who looked very capable last night.
I thought McGrath looked very good on the ball, looking very assured but we know he'll face stiffer more physical tests than last night. .
Up front though, we look so dangerous attacking at pace from all angles
-

All four now showing.

The fact it wasn’t Hull’s first team is as irrelevant as the shoreline.
At times, Hull were stuck in the sand!

I thought we were very good last night, hungry and fit - pressing hard up the pitch, lots of quality on show - Hurst, Bailey, Ironside and Gibson look absolutely excellent.
Enjoyed that, squad looks strong and deep - really fancy our chances of top 3 this year.

Yes, they came up against Cliffe.

My take on it is a great work out against a pretty poor Tigers side. We dominated midfield with Bailey and Broadbent hardly putting a foot wrong, I would say that's the best performance I've seen from Broadbent, he sat in and let Bailey forage forward occasionally and was rewarded with two excellent goals.
Hurst was a different class up the middle and was a pain in the ass for their defenders, harrying them constantly, and he was rewarded with that lovely chip over their goalie after dispossessing a defender, a lovely cool finish.
Joe did what Joe does and was in the right place to tuck his goal away from a lovely pint point cross on the floor from Sterry was it?
A special mention for McGrath, I thought he looked excellent on the ball, calm, assured, did things the simple way, and his distribution to the wings and into mid-field I thought was really good. Very impressed with him on this showing.
Gibson looked a good player, as did Sbarra and Yaboah when they came on, both really quick and direct. Tom Nixon looked a completely different player from last season, Christ he was quick, in one occasion he received a moving ball on the right, pushed it past the oncoming player turned on the after burners and just left him for dead, and excellent piece of skill, he had a really good game when he came on.
Not much to say about Billy, scuffed a left foot shot wide of the post and generally just harried their defence into getting rid of the ball quickly. He'll come good as we all know.
I can only say I enjoyed that showing from our lads, we looked incredibly fit, quick and organized all over the pitch. Looking forward to what this team does this season.
-
I think both Nixon and Senior are developing well and if these were our first choice full backs, then I wouldn't be disappointed. However, for me, both Sterry and Maxwell have that bit more finesse about them, which generally shows in the final third.
As you said, Nixon is all action, a very powerful runner but just needs to develop getting his head up to deliver the quality final balls. Last night, as you say, his first run ended up with an overnight cross, but his second dash to the byline, he steadied himself before delivering a lovely cross. He's learning and when he plays more with his head up, he'll be a real threat.
Sterry's cut back for Bailey’s first goal shows the difference for me but what great completion we have for those spots.
-
We looked like we start the season tomorrow. We looked professional and organised against a hull side that looked like they were on holiday mode
-

It’s just a case of can we finish as Champions imo. I think we will.
Yes i know I am getting ahead of myself but there are no squads as good as ours in league 2 imo.
We have 2 players for every position without weakening the team to any considerable degree.
I saw enough last night to tell me we are going to be a Champions or very close contenders in this league.
Hull may not have had their strongest team last night but that doesn’t matter. We are a team playing like a well oiled machine and we have another 2 pre season games to play yet.
I have never been so confident in previous seasons as I am right now that we will get promoted this season.

100% agree - you could feel the positive vibes coming off them all night, I've never seen such a comprehensive performance from any side who made so many changes after 60 minutes and just kept on going - ding dong !
-
We've played Stamford, Darlo, Spennymore and effectively Hull U18's. It's all about fitness but I wouldn't be reading too much into anything we've seen yet, or any pre-season game for that matter.
It's going to be a tough league again and we're going to have to be really good and start well to be Champions. Gillingham, MK, Port Vale, Notts County, Carlisle, Salford, Chesterfield etc. etc. all looking decent on paper. Can Bradford finally get their act together? Will there be another surprise package like Barrow/Crewe/Crawley last season who end up challenging? Don't bet against it.

I wasn't there last night, Pib, but Hull U18s? Surely that's an exaggeration, as apparently that academy side are playing tonight.
Fringe players would surely be a better description.

They fielded a strong team, just shit tactics
-
From their report, they didn’t bring their ‘big guns’ on until about the 60th minute, which was when we made loads of changes.
To be fair, after that point, we looked a bit ragged at times and we lost a bit of control. Overall, though, a good run-out and a scoreline I never expected!

McCann now saying that Anderson, Clifton, Close and Westbrooke likely to be in position to get some minutes next week.
Sounds like all of them could be in squad contention for Accrington.
