I reckon we’ll blow a few teams away this season
-
And we were clearly some way below our best for a lot of the game today. The strength in depth is fantastic as well. Survived Ironside? Have 20 minutes of Sharp. Hurst not tired you out? Maybe Sbarra will.
-
To add into the match day squad mix are Close, Westbrooke, Senior, Kelly and McGrath. And McCann claims to want another attacking loan player. This is an insane level of competition.

That might be the key, already you can see its not just a very good team, but a very good bench. Just need to steer clear of last years injuries.
-
Gibson looks an absolute gem. He’ll hurt a few teams this season for sure.
-
It’s not even just a very good team and bench, just think of the players not in that match day squad:
Close (walks in most teams in this league)
Westbrooke ( not far behind above)
The new kid( he must be thinking where he fits in this after today)
McGrath a very good player
It’s almost an embarrassment of riches

You do wonder if the squad is too big?

Blasphemy

How did Sharman-Lowe play? BBC stats suggest Accy had 3 shots and 2 on target, but that doesn’t always reflect the involvement of the GK. Did he organise the defence, was he confident, decisive, mobile, quick in his reactions etc.?

Jury is still out for me, never had much to do, there was one easy catch that he chose to punch for some strange reason
-
Looked a lot sharper than in pre season wasn't really tested but caught a couple of crosses and punched one away so overall OK, defence was solid in front of him Anderson and Wood had good games as did the fullbacks, especially going forward
-

Must admit I’m starting to think how do we keep everyone happy! We have to be going to win the EFL cup.
The good thing is we aren’t going quantity over quality. If you can have both you have to make use of it. If there’s limited funds then quality over qty all day for me.

Agree. He was very competent with ehat he did. Dealt with a couple of crosses, came out to the edge of his area a couple of times to clear danger. Looked quite composed for the most part. Only the punch when a catch looked easier, bit at least he got good distance on it.
Not a slick performance, particularly first half but scored some cracking goals. We're a threat from all parts. Icing on the cake was Billy's Billy Sharp type goal. In the right place at the right time. That's a monkey of his back if there ever was one.
Yes, we can play better, but so can other teams. This won't be easy.
-
Thought he was good. Looked very assured.
-
Thought he was good. Looked very assured.
Yeah, so did I.
He had no chance with their goal but looked very confident when coming to collect two or three crosses.
The punch away surprised me too but he got it well away from the danger.
He was constantly shouting instructions too which is great for the defence.
-
When keepers punch the ball and it ends up on the halfway line it's certainly not the end of the world
-
You do wonder if the squad is too big?
We play a shit load of games with injuries and suspensions everyone who deserves will get a fair crack.
-
The keeper did nothing wrong at all. He’ll face far bigger tests but he can take some confidence from that on his football league debut.
Echo the positivity on the new players. Gibson looks pure class. Sbarra improved us when he came on. Clifton looks like he can handle himself, too. Sharp looks just like vintage Sharp and Yeboah showed some signs of promise.
I thought Broadbent largely did well - some lovely quick forward passes. Molyneux has probably knocked in the goal of the season already.
We look to have a really strong squad to go with the best manager in the division.

:that: Yeah, what he said.
-
Thought TSL looked very assured claiming high balls and in his distribution.
Goalie’s look to punch if they think it could cause a break away don’t they?
-
I imagine there will be some changes of personnel on Tuesday and still put out a strong team.
-
Very good first outing for us, we looked a bit rushed and not too composed in the first half, i'd imagine some of those chances we had would have been gobbled up after a few more games.
Thought we looked very slow to get going after the break and it allowed them to score with a decent move. We managed to wrestle the advantage back and then kicked on after that with some beautiful goals, to get Sharp up and running in his first match back was special.
Only the first game but with a bit more time together this team could rip a few defences apart with our flexible forward line, it looks like we have goals all across the front.
Cant wait for Tuesday, this could be a transformative season.
Hoping for a bit of luck with Maxwells injury but we look like we have players champing at the bit to get a run,if your going to have issues these are the type you want.
Lets kick on.

Clifton really caught my eye.
That’s the definition of ‘Legs in midfield’.
-
To score 4, with our main striker not bagging speaks volumes about this team..

I know he's a young lad and I hope he comes good but I thought Broadbent was poor. Turned far too easy for their goal and I thought in general he was poor in possession. I don't think he will end up having a career here personally in the long term.
-
We see things differently, in my opinion George had a good game in the anchor rōle. He got played into difficulty with some of the passes from Wood in particular but overall a good performance JMHO
-
The saying of the season should be “next one” win lose or draw

I thought same. He ploughed through a fair few of their players. We’ve got some steel in there this season.

Yes, I think Broadbent covered alot of ground and quite often he was left to cope on his own while Bailey moved around quite a bit. I thought at times he needed to support Broadbent a bit better to link up play. Broadbents improving his range of passing and accuracy but, like most have said, we tried to rush things a bit too much in the first half. I wasn't surprised he was subbed for some fresh legs, Work in progress.
-
Think we need a proper passer next to Bailey in midfield. Broadbent was ok but as sure one of the other four centre midfielders we have has to be better than him.
-
That Billy sharp looked like a good player, think he could make a good career in this game!
-
Bit slow though don't you think? And he's not reight tall either....

-
…the perfect impact sub!
-
Broadbent ok some of the time but is ‘meh’ when he’s not got the ball. No real bite to his game - by contrast, as soon as Clifton got on the park, it was bam - tackle flying in, then another and another. He’s got to work hard at this if he wants to keep his place, as there’s 2 guys now breathing fire to replace him.
My favourite part of the whole game today was seeing Sharp, Clifton and Yeboah coming on. This must have been absolutely soul destroying for their midfield and defenders! Yes, the goals were tremendous, but if anything emphasised our strength this season those subs did. Hurst was having a bit of an up and down game - no worries, on comes a very lively S’barra. Maxwell has to go off (unfortunately injured) and on comes a fired up Nixon. God help any team in this league if and when we actually ‘click’.
-
I thought we were fairly ordinary for the first hour. Their goal was one that we've conceded over and over in the last few seasons and shows our defensive weaknesses. Can't argue with the result and some cracking goals but as Accy supposedly one of the weaker teams this season I think we've still got a few teething problems to sort out, the defence still gives me nightmares. Still, a wins a win and we're on our way. Now let's blow Salford away!

Felt like a reverse of many of the games in the Championship way back.
Accrington worked hard, had an excellent structure and more than matched us for 60 minutes.
Then we won the game through a couple of bits of really high individual quality.
Amazing how good you can look when you spend more money than your opposition.
-
Accrington did a job on us 1st half and we were poor in possession and quite rushed on the ball. I thought first half showed how important Matty Craig was too us last season hopefully the West Ham boy can have the same influence. Goals change games however and after the 2 worldies we took control. Think most teams will come to our ground looking for a point, so will sit deep & it will be up to us to break them down.
-
I think we're being a bit harsh there. In the first half, we were too eager to play the killer pass. Gibson on two occasions overhit threaded passes and Broadbent had another one intercepted. They could have played easier passes and kept possession but, they also were keen to play at pace, as we want them to.
Bailey wanted to roam a bit more while Broadbent held the Fort. He could have been more safe and given Broadbent an easier pass, but again, we're not wanting to play safe football.
There were two occasions when Bailey signalled Maxwell to push right up, ready to spring forward, but both times the move broke down when Woody played two poor passes into midfield which got intercepted.
These are not bad things, we want to take risks so we have to perfect the passages of play.
Like Middlesbrough, who played fast attacking one touch football, not all their moves come off, but they don't worry about it, they just get the ball back and go again. Relentless at times and that's what we aspire to.
-
We were just a little long or short in first half. Case in point, Gibson hitting post. Come second half we we had got our eye in and looked very clinical. Hit bar again and then the first chance Billy had, meant we could have been in an even better position.
-
Amazing how good you can look when you spend more money than your opposition.
If only we’d known that whilst Blunt was in charge!
Surely, not just about money, BST, and you know it.
-
After seeing a summer of people complaining about safe, keep the ball football it was refreshing to see Rovers trying to find the killer pass even if it meant losing the ball.
Grant likes his teams to play that way and would rather win 4-3 than 1-0.
I suppose it is inevitable though that fans will complain when the killer pass doesn’t come off and we lose possession.
-
Agree with almost all these comments especially I thought the goalie was much improved.
Special mention also to Yeboah who I thought looked clumsy and poor in pre season but I thought he was really good.
I do think they are in for a long hard season, possibly go down but it was great to get them early and get off to a flyer.
The most pleasing thing for me was we look like we’ve just picked up where we ended. Only 2 new signings started and I think that will have been in Grants mind, continue how we finished.
I wonder if he’s still got his mini league table running!
-
Surprised Yeboah hasn't got more of a mention. Looked very promising and confident when he came on.
-
Opening game is never easy either so I wouldn’t read too much into the 1st half anyway.
Last time we got out of L2 we often weren’t levels above the opposition for the whole game. We’d just have a 10-15min spell where the quality shows and we blow them away.
Think we’ll be much more entertaining than that side and are probably a lot better in forward areas if not at the back.
-

Thought Broadbent had more impact on the game than Bailey.
Now that’s saying something.
Going to be interesting to see if Kelly gets into the team anytime soon.
Maybe he gets a run out on Tues at Salford.
We are seriously spoilt for sure and what a great headache this is for GM.
Inevitably there will be injuries so having this depth of squad will mean we can keep the team winning games.
Maxwell yesterday was a big blow getting injured but in Senior we have a very decent replacement although not as good Offensively as JM is.
Our forward players are going to do some serious damage in this league. Molly, Gibson, Hurst, Sbarra, Yeboah, Ironside & Sharpe.
Seriously is there another team in League 2 with that depth of creativity and goal scoring ability.
We will have 4 players score 12 or more goals this season imo.
Molly could quite easily get 20 this season. If he shoots 4 times he will score 1 of them. Just keep getting those shots off.
Gibson, Ironside and Sharpe will also get 12 plus I am very confident.
This is going to be some season.
5 wins and a draw from the 1st 6 games. Take a draw at Port Vale
We will win all the others imo.
-
We’re better suited to game that is a bit more open when the opposition try to take us on.
We weren’t at our best but we didn’t need to be. Their players were miles off the standard of ours. They are in for a long old season.
-
Surprised Yeboah hasn't got more of a mention. Looked very promising and confident when he came on.
I thought he went down too easily.
-

Made some clever runs, but a little lightweight at times

Bailey is just Mr consistent. Yesterday he did his usual just plugs away winning tackles and headers and playing simple ball.
I think taking Bailey out the team would massively impact us.

100% agree.
He is a massive player for us. Don’t think he will need to stand out this season just be consistent.
Last season he held us together in the first 28 games and without him we would have been in massive trouble. In the last 18 games he was superb along with most of the others.
-
The most pleasing thing yesterday was the subs improved us. I really don’t think Hurst suits that position even though he looked good there pre season. Sbarra was much improved from the pre season games I have seen him in. Clifton added a bit of tenacity which helped us win the ball back quicker. Yeboah looked strong and direct, Nixon you know you are going to get at least a 7/10 performance and Billy does what he does best. Speaks volumes that he came on and should have scored 2. He will think more about the one he missed than the one he scored. Overall the day had the makings of a nailed on promotion party at the end of the season. If everybody stays fit I can’t see how we won’t finish in that top 3.
-

comes in handy as the season goes on

Sbarra is high quality.

I thought he won a few clever free kicks. Just what you need late in games when winning.

We’ve always been able to spend more money than Accy, but we haven’t always got the better of them. Very rarely, in fact, until recent meetings.
Of course it’s about more than money.

Legs have gone...

Reckon Billy will score more goals per mins on the pitch than anyone else in the entire 4 top leagues this season.

I was saying that on the way out yesterday.
40x15 minute appearances. 20 goals.

That’s definitely possible. I will say he will get 15 goals in the league.
