They say in cricket that a left handed batsman often looks more elegant than a right handed counterpart, and maybe there is something similar in football.
Mols superb second strike against Accrington left me thinking 'can I remember a better left footed strike for Rovers?'
I am thinking that is a 'no' but which strikes would it be up against?
The best two that come to my mind are Tommy Rowe at Charlton in the League 1 playoffs, and way back in 1984-85, when Bradford City were flying and won the old Division 3 (and also the season the stand tragically burned down). Glyn Snodin scored a real screamer at Valley Parade that day, and we went on to win with 9 men, and with Ian Snodin seemingly playing like three players to even things up.
Any other candidates anyone can think of?
Edit: Have now added a poll. Will add extra options if good ones appear. For clarification I am talking about the best shot or finish, not necessarily the best goal which might e.g involve a team move or run or dribble (e.g. Alick Jeffrey vs Scunthorpe or Martin Woods vs Forest). Also no weight given to how important the goal was in the context of the match or season.
Edit: Video of Elliot Ward's goal at Hillsborough is grainy, but I think (not sure) that it was right foot. If anyone is convinced otherwise I can add it in.
If the voters who have gone 'any other' could say below who they voted for I can try and add those choices in :scarf:
-
Pretty much any Tim Ryan goal?
-
Was Elliot Wards overhead kick with his left peg? I know he was left footed but something telling me it was his right.
-

Trying to remember if the memorable one at Cambridge was left footed - I think so.
-
Gareth Roberts away at Posh. Left hand corner of the penalty area, just outside I think, hits the ball with the outside of his left foot resulting in an inswinger into the opposite corner. I was in the stand right behind that shot, it was something else..
-
Billy Sharp - that's for you son
-
Any from Glynn - especially the one you mentioned Dutch.

Gareth Roberts v Ipswich ( Portman Road )
Lashed it over Richard Wright from half way. I was using Company Tickets in main Stand and was right behind it and knew it was in from the second he let fly
Ipswich again ... McSporran was out on the right but did he let fly with Left ?
I was going to say Franny Tierney's Promotion Goal at Stoke and looked at this to " check "
https://x.com/stusfootyflash/status/1788811236273991731
Was wrong but nevertheless I was pleased to see the gent writing it recognized the Promotion Goal status.

Rowe's goal at Charlton was as sumptuous a strike as you will ever see. I could watch it over and over again forever.
But for sheer power, nothing will ever eclipse that free kick of Glynn's at OBV (I think against Gillingham). The one that hit a player in the wall on the shin. And he was carried off.
-
The King against Scunthorpe after he went past three defenders and scored with his left foot at the Rosso end. I may be wrong but recall that we were two down and finished winning 4-3. Wolfie please correct me if I’m wrong.

Remember it well and I think you are spot on Goole :scarf:

Just added a poll for 7 days (first time I have tried that)
I am going for Moly

Not a screamer, but Michael McIndoe scored the best goal I've ever seen live with his left foot Vs Bristol Rovers in 03/04. Receives the ball with his back to goal, flicks the ball up in the air, then flicks it over his head, pirouettes 180 degrees and volleys the ball in, all with his left foot while under pressure 6-7 yards out. Incredible to see that take place in the early 2000s 3rd division. Believe it was his hat trick as well.
-
Peter Higgins against Newport
-
Tim Ryan away at Blackpool.
Gareth Roberts at home to Watford
-
Remember a great left footed scissor kick from Neil Grayson at the Rosso end, Belle Vue, he appeared to be 6ft off the ground when he struck the ball.
-
Vague memories here, however I remember a Glyn Snodin beauty of a strike, top corner at Feethams Darlington, right in front of the away Rovers fans. Must have been very late 70’s prior to our 80/81 promotion season under Billy B and nice one Cyril.
I remember hanging around and Glyn came out of the players entrance heading towards the team bus, he was absolutely beaming. Think we did lose the game though ???

If we're talking left footed brilliance, I would like to put forward one of the best left footed 'deft' strikes at the end of the best team move I've ever seen (just beats Billy's at Elland Road)
I give you Martin Woods chip.

Which foot did Stockie score with against Boro? on that semi frozen pitch

Wow! What a team that was just cut through Forest… from then on that season I think we had champions form…. What a shame we could not build on that, it was premiership stuff.

That pitch wasn’t frozen it was just a bit nippy that night

Moly's goal was fabulous, DU, but the 2 reasons I've gone for Alick's goal against Scunny was firstly, his slightly stronger foot was his right, and secondly, he was almost completely closed down, whereas Moly was given so much room to pull the trigger.
-
The Tim Ryan goal at Cambridge wins it for me just.
It was sept 30th 2003 not 2004

That corresponds with my memory as well, can't really disagree. Will see if, I can add the option
Managed to add the option - but can you actually change your vote SS?

I keep watching Luke’s goal and the technique is incredible. He doesn’t seem to have any real pace in his leg/foot as he swings. The ball seems to start off slow and pick up speed as it rose.
It’s a wonderful strike.
-
Two standout strikes stick out for me but I can’t remember who against and if the players were left or right footer
- Quinton Fortune (maybe in the 2-2 draw with Scunthorpe)
- Steve Brooker (you know the one)

This is what I think - a true thing of beauty like an effortless David Gower cover drive

Yes indeed Scooter. Anyone else know if they were left footed?
-
Brooker was at home vs Leicester..
But was right footed..

Checked it out, was inside the box but a volley too, this bad quality clip is from the other side.. goal about 1 min 12 secs..

Wasn't Kieron Brady left footed?
If so, I'll have the one at Scunthorpe away in 92 please.
Edit. Just checked, he was left footed.

This one wasn't too shabby!......

That has to be right up there with the best BB.
I was right in line with that shot and it was in from the moment he hit it.

Well, I think so mate!

Martin Woods vs Forest away is up there for best team goal.
-
Martin Woods also scored an absolute screamer of a left foot volley from 30 yards out in the early days at the keepmoat Vs Rotherham... For Rotherham, though, sadly!

This has sent me; I had vivid memories of Brooker half-volleying this in... but from the other corner of the penalty area. I'm now left wondering how many of my other memories of Rovers goals are in fact a lie.

Not lies. Just slightly embellished over time.

I remember Freddie Piquionne (spelling?) scoring a rocket of a shot too, maybe away at Forest.
Was that a left footer, my head says yes but I’m not totally sure.
-
Definitely away at Forest, night game

And who was the no5 slotting home the penalty.?? :chair:
Good to see Savage on the losing side too..
-
‘M surprised that nobody has mentioned any David Cotterill strikes. He got one or two crackers, as did Albert Broadbent back in the day.

I considered Cotterill, but wasn't he right-footed?
-
That JET goal for me, never heard a crowd reaction like it. The speed and power it flew in the net, and by the way, the clip did not do it justice.
There was a very loud intake of breath from all sides before the rovers fans begun to cheer.
-
It was 8 men we won with at Valley Parade Brian. Not 9.

I think memory can play tricks Bob. We were both there that day and I must say I also had it in my head we were down to 8. But the records show only 2 red cards (Butterworth and Harle), and Tony Bluff's History of Rovers book talks about winning with 9 men, which suggests no-one went off injured (only 1 sub in those days). Maybe the Red Baron can confirm.
-
Really? That's mind blowing. To me, the memorable fact that made that day so special was finishing with 8 men. Rovers had a goalie, Parker on loan from Barnsley up front and the rest strung in a line across the pitch marshalled by Ian. If we finished with 9 players then that means a line of 7 across the pitch. That just doesn't sound either feasible or true to me.

Poll now closed - we have a winner - but only just :scarf:

Didn’t Mcindoe score a 3 touch left footer ? Flick up, touch and spin, bang?
-
You have just reminded me of McIndoes goal against Arsenal.
