See so many new topics when an ex player scores, assists, transfers, gets injured so why not keep it in one place.
On that note Joe Wright scored the winner for Kilmarnock last night in the Europa Conference League, Deji Sotana is out for the season with an ACL injury and Alfie May scored from the spot for Birmingham last weekend.
-
Didn’t know that about Deji. Poor lad.
-
Looks like Jon Taylor out injured again went off at HT last Saturday
Faal scored midweek for WBA
-
Joe Wright has got his own thread.

Billy Paynter is the new manager of Connah's Quay Nomads in the Cymru Premier. Nomads are the current Welsh Cup holders and have been the only side to really challenge TNS' dominance in recent seasons.
His first game was today, a local derby against Flint Town United (managed by another ex-Rover, and former Rovers team-mate of Paynter, Lee Fowler) at the ground the two sides share; Paynter's Nomads won 1-0.

“The Ones That Got Away” would be a better title - and these snippets do not make very satisfying reading.

Alfie scored another goal last Saturday.

Harrison Biggins has just gone on loan to Carlisle.
That's a weird one isn't it. Do Shrews just not fancy him? Signing a 28 year old then sending him out on loan until the end of the season after 3 games doesn't speak well of his future chances.

Yeah, he saved his best performance at the Keepmoat for when he played against us for Bradford City!
-
Can’t believe we missed Rakish Bingham getting on the scoresheet last Saturday v Rochdale. What a player he was (nt)
-
He was probably the best we could get for the money on offer at that time though.
Not his fault that we were literally out of his league.
-

He was, but it was a ridiculous statement re playing in the championship again.

I didn't realise that Gareth Taylor the Man Citeh women's manager is the same Gareth Taylor who played 31 games for us towards the end of his playing career.

Gareth Taylor’s assistant is Ricky Passmore from Armthorpe. He also managed Leeds United and Notts County ladies FC.

Harrison Biggins on the end of 4-0 defeat and now bottom of the league….bet he is kicking himself not taking that contract offer.

It gets better than that. He came on as a 61st minute sub and scored a 90+1 equaliser to get the draw. And there's more. He was playing up front with Rakish Bingham. Reunited.

I saw him play for us, MM. He was the 2nd best keeper I've seen in my lifetime, Gordon Banks being the greatest.
He was also a courageous hero, and a thoroughly nice guy.
Thanks for the link.

Andy Williams at 38 years young still going strong. He scored for Hereford in their 3-0 win over Farsley in National North.
That’s an excellent call DM.
I always thought AW was a ‘class act’ for us. He would score goals from any angle, always ‘happy’ to play second fiddle to Marquis or indeed May.
You could bring him on with 10 minutes to play & know he had clearly been watching the game ‘intently from the dug out’ so knew where to put himself in the best position to affect the game, on one ‘special occasion’ (the opponents elude me) he scored the winner in 90+ minutes to snatch victory from the jaws of defeat,
A man who was born to be & clearly wants to be a footballer for ‘ever & a day’.
Hat’s off to you Andy Williams, you ‘owe us nothing’ we owe you much.

I was at the game. It was like war flashbacks seeing them two together.
(Bingham started and was awful, Thomas was actually surprisingly effective when he came on. Mind you, this was a match between the bottom two of the Conference...)

Taking Charge of Shrewsbury Town today in their bottom of the table clash with Burton. Presently not going too well…

I’m watching the Kilmarnock vs Celtic game, Joe Wright was fortunate to have received a yellow card instead of a red card for an elbow on Adam Idah. He’s already had 2 red cards so, this season.

John Marquis scores for Shrewsbury (23rd in L1) who lead 2-1 against high flying Birmingham. He’s their top scorer.
-
At the other side of this match, Alfie started, but was subbed and although he scored 5 early in the season and has started 18 times he has not scored since the beginning of October and has 3 Assists to his name. It ended 3-2 to Shrewsbury T.
-
BBC website shows Alfie as not starting today but he did come on as a sub after 55 minutes.

One I'd forgotten about from a few seasons ago...Josef Bursik.
He's dropped a right clanger this evening apparently, playing for Hibs & gifting a goal to Dundee.

Scunny-supporting mate informs me the team of Andy Butler and John Schofield are quickly losing support over there. Rumours of losing the dressing room, a divided cliquey squad constantly falling out, and a formation that the players don't want to play all sound familiar from Butler's time in the dugout here.
They are only 2 points off Curzon Ashton at the top, although they are bang out of form and a lot of teams around them have games in hand. Looking like it might be the play-off lottery again.

He wasn't a great finisher generally. But what he did have was bags of energy and commitment and a great football brain that meant he was always in the right position to get a shot on goal. All that goes out the window when it comes to penalty taking though.
-
Marquis has a career penalty success rate of 60 per cent and a penalty success rate of 42 per cent for us. These are normal time statistics, so his miss against Charlton in the semi final second leg isn’t included, which will drag his statistics down further.

Is that from visits to Aachen & Maastricht Bob? Roda are in Kerkrade - the strange place with the Dutch-German border running down the centre of a long urban road - the place on the German side is called Herzogenrath. Sittard is very close by and Colin Cramb and Mike Jeffrey have both played for Fortuna Sittard.
Also saw Dire Straits live in the Roda Hal in the late 1970's before they got really famous

Yes Brian. I liked the name. We saw the ground once or twice driving by. And it's a completely bonkers place sat right astride an international border. It's just a place you have to love. Lol.

Alfie although he only got an assist for the Birmingham goal deserves a mention for his flick on here -
there is no truth in the rumour that the Wrexham No. 38 was a distant relative of Marcus Agrippa
Perhaps Alfie should let his finger nails grow

Mo Faal scored for Wrexham this week in the EFL trophy win at Vale. I had forgotten he had gone there, he has barely played and must be way down the pecking order. So far not such a good move as far as game time is concerned, but he is probably earning plenty. Surprised he hasn't been loaned out.

He’s 7/8th choice striker now after signing for a reported 500k at the end of August.
Couldn’t go out on loan as he had played for West Brom before signing for Wrexham.

Thanks for that, DU. A great finish from Danny. By God though, a serious lack of attendance there for a top of the table clash. There couldn't have been much more than 1000.
Is Northern Irish football usually so poorly attended?
-
Linfield have the largest attendances - they play at Windsor Park, about 18K capacity, but only average about 3K
Glentoran are averaging about 2500 these days, but the 'big-two' Glentoran-Linfield matches (4 times in the league each season) often have a full house of 6K at Glentoran, or an attendance of 8K at Windsor
Edit: We do have a big Glentoran fan on this forum, and he might know a bit better

Glentoran are the best supported club in Northern Ireland, but Linfield get bigger crowds because they attract more away supporters because the added bonus of going to the national stadium than to the likes of Loughall or Carrick.
Next season the crowds at Coleraine will improve as they bringing in a raft of new players including Joel Cooper from Linfield, who is just about the best player in the league, their manager is Dean Sheils. Also Coleraine is a stand alone club in its own town, where as Glentoran, Linfield, Crusaders and Cliftonville are all in Belfast.
Also if the Irish league was played on a Friday night or a Sunday afternoon the crowds would improve considerably because as DU will echo there is a massive amount of junior football played in N.Ireland, every village seems to have a team, taking supporters away from attending senior football.

Came across this remarkable clip of Harry Gregg just now. Not a player many of us on here will have seen play for us, but worth posting all the same.
Christ that's moving.
With BSTs comment, I was expecting to see a save from some rocket shot. That vid far surpassed that. Thanks for posting.
Scawsby Steve has sometimes written in here about Harry Gregg and that he did actually see him play.
Watching that clip of HG, he seems to have been quite a shy person.
-
Another goal for John Marquis today - 4 in 5 now and up to 8 for the season (just behind Alfie May’s 10).
Keshi Anderson playing well for Birmingham against Newcastle on the BBC, May on the bench and likely to make an appearance before too long.
A different level at Birmingham. Marquis won’t have the competition that Alfie has.

Further down the thread there's a comment from his daughter who says he was overcome with emotion. I can believe it. From a lot of the interviews I've seen with him he seemed very uncomfortable with the idea of being treated as a hero. Imagine that made it hard to do with a camera crew in his face as well.

Couldn't agree more.
I saw him play when I was a little kid.
He looked good to me but I was too young to appreciate just how good.
As I grew older I realised what a brilliant keeper he was.
And a man of many contrasts...a hard man, but also kind and gentle, and emotional.
Obviously incredibly brave to do what he did.
Munich affected him greatly and he was never able to recall the occasion without a quiver in his voice.
Yet only four months later, while still suffering from the trauma of the crash, he was named the best goalkeeper in the 1958 World Cup.
Magnificent keeper - a true Rovers legend - and a magnificent man.

Swings and roundabouts. Marquis won’t have anywhere near the level of quality service either.

2x38
I think there will be a major re-shuffle at the end of and maybe that’ll include the manager.

Kind of getting the results they deserve. They are clueless when it comes to recruitment.

I notice Alfie May has been on the bench for the last couple of Birmingham games

11 scored out of 21
-
As a regular taker that's awful really
-
I doubt any manager would pressure a player with such a poor penalty return into taking them. I can only suppose that Marquis still wants the penalties for no reason other than to boost his goals tally and sod the good of the team.

It’s a terrible record. Can only blame managers who permit this to continue though.

Changing the subject slightly, I just had a look at the National League table after that result last night.
Is it time for a re-vamp of the promotion / play-off system in the NL?
I would advocate 2 teams being automatically promoted, and those finishing in 3rd-6th places competing in a 'traditional' play-off format for a 3rd promotion spot.
As the table stands now, Southend in 7th place would get a play-off spot despite being TWENTY-SIX points behind 2nd-placed York City, who are also in the play-offs of course.
That can't be right, surely?
Obviously it would mean 3 teams being relegated from the EFL but in my opinion than would simply enhance the status of the NL as a new 'League 3', and maybe remove some of the stigma of being relegated from League 2, with that 'our world has ended' feeling for the likes of Carlisle this season.
-
At the start of the season the rules are set and it happens every so often with the play offs that a team scrapes into the last place on goal difference or a 90th minute equaliser, then goes on and wins the playoffs. I’m all for promotion and relegation but a lot of the teams that come up have no history or big enough fan base to maintain a league position, some clubs bankrupt themselves trying to do it.
-
While I don't disagree with what you are saying DIII, since promotion from Tier 5 to Football League stated in 1986-87, not one team that has been promoted has been relegated immediately (Macclesfield 22nd in 2018-19 the lowest 'debut' season). Probably the 'bounce' effect.
Sutton with 3 seasons is the shortest stay in the FL so far.

Exactly what I mean these teams have a solid history behind them and an established fan base of over 6,000 . John Bostock and Joe Dodoo playing for Solihull Moores on Saturday in a 2-0 defeat at York. Cameron John, who seems to have established himself as York's first choice left back, scored the first goal. His first since scoring for us in a 3-2 win over Blackpool in November 2020.

I always thought John would end up higher up the pyramid than us. I remember one of his early games, away at Ipswich when we drew 0-0 and he was absolutely immense at centre half. Never seemed up to it at LB, though, so it’s surprising that’s where he’s ended up playing.

I would be absolutely amazed if we got Rob Street - he's still got 3 years on his contract with Lincoln and they reportedly paid something over £60k for him.
But like you Bri, I have faith in the club to find a good replacement.

No goals in nearly 5 years for Cameron John .......... 2 in 2 for York!

Josh Emmanuel has made it through to the National League play offs with Halifax Town. They are away at Oldham Athletic on 14 May in the eliminator to then potentially go through to the semi finals against York City on 20 May.
Oldham Athletic have Dan Gardner and Billy Waters on their books.

Southend United who have endured enormous ownership problems over a number of years and survived probably record Winding Up petitions have had an average gate of 7339 this season. Considering that they have only just scraped into the Play-offs this is evidence of a very loyal fanbase when you take account too of West Ham being only an hour or so away.

Bit strong that. They were struggling when he signed on a short term deal played 7 games and was seriously injured about 5 or 6 weeks ago.

If that's the case, then the minority was well vindicated when he went on to play in the Premier League for Villa, in a club record breaking run of 10 successive wins.
I think you need to be a fairly decent keeper to achieve that.

Think you’re confusing a couple of separate things there, Steve, or possibly missing an “and”. Steer did play in the PL for Villa, but very briefly - 2 starts 7 years apart with an 8 minute substitute appearance in between. Their 10 game winning run came when in the Championship, but he was in goal for that run.

Can vouch for him being a top lad. Long story short I won a pair of his boots whilst a few Stella’s deep through a charity donation thing but never got sent them. Tweeted Joe jokingly and he sent me a pair in the post. Delighted he’s making a good career for himself.

Had lunch at The Rustic Pizza Co today on a rare foray back to the motherland, and (very much current player) Moly was having lunch with Sam Hird. Not sure what he’s up to these days, wiki just says his last move was to accept a role at the PFA. Was surprised to find out that he’s younger than me and still only 37!

An Aiden Barlow v Joe Dodoo and John Bostock showdown is currently happening in the National League.
Dodoo came on to replace an injured Solihull player and has subsequently been subbed off injured himself.
Dodoo released by Solihull Moors. You do wonder what kind of life that is for players like him. Playing games all over the place for a bit of cash. Since he left us he has played in the Turkish Cypriot league, Burton Albion, then didn't play for months, and then moonlighted at Solihull Moors at the end of the season. Will probably get half decent cash on short term deals but he is still just about in his 20s and he's jobbing around the leagues trying to find a few quid.

Shows the value of trying to make some of the loan deals permanent. Worked for us with Whiteman. Galbraith ended up going on a free from Manchester United after we’d played a key role in his development, but it’s Leyton Orient that benefit the most as they took him on a contract. Goes to show that paying big money for a striker just because they’ve hit a bit of form and are top of the scoring charts mid-season is dumb. But most fans would want their club to do it.

We cant talk after our record against Bromley last season!

Actually I had thought that as they were in League One last season and signings like Big Tom and Sam Stubbs, they would be a far better bet for promotion. As it stands they are also rans with the bookies, not much different at all to Bromley. So maybe that was quite a decent result for them!

Clean sheet for Big Tom on his debut yesterday along of course with a booking. Uninspiring 0-0 home draw with Bromley is a bit concerning though.
Are Marquis and Biggins still there?
Yep, both started on Saturday along with Big Tom. They had Sam Stubbs and Sam Clucas starting also. A strong side for League Two. Managed by Michael Appleton as well. Ex-Rover Sean Parrish is their first team coach.
They look a good bet for promotion.
-
That is what I thought but they are absolutely nowhere with the bookies. Odds closer to relegation than promotion.
-

The thinking is they have signed a load of big names who are either past it or don't fit with Appleton's preferred style of play. Plus in the last couple of years there is a trend of sides dropping into L2 then being relegated again. I can see it.
-
They'll be mid table. Some decent signings like Stubbs but yeah a lot of older players in that squad.

Heard the lads on NTT20 tout them for relegation saying similar. Adding that Stubbs and Anderson were “cloggers”, as if other L2 centre halves play like prime Beckenbauer
Reckon they just need someone quick to play alongside Marquis.
-
I think touting them for relegation is a bit strong but I've just gone and listened and tbf they were complementary-ish about Stubbs. Did call Anderson a clogger though which is harsh on Tom, even if his best days are behind him.
Usually like listening to these guys but they also had us finishing behind Bradford this season, so f**k em.
-
Mo Faal season long loan to Port Vale. They're welcome to each other.
-
Looks like Kieran Sadlier is on his way to Exeter, good player but hampered by injuries last season
-
Rodney Kongolo has signed for FC Emmen in Holland.
-
Dutch second tier in a 8,600 stadium. Long way from Man City for the lad.

Has been on trial at Cheltenham Town but didn't make their squad last weekend. Doesn't look like it has worked out there, yet at least.

Currently getting beat 3-0 away at Tranmere. Had a man sent off but were already 2-0 down at that point. Tough start for them.
-
Olowu on bench for Stockport with Danny Andrew.
Teddy starts for Bolton.
Olowu starts today for Stockport County away at Wycombe Wanderers, seems to be playing on right in a back three.
-
I notice Alfie May has been on the bench for the last couple of Birmingham games
I noticed today that Alfie wears shirt number 26 for Huddersfield. A nod to Copps?
-
Lincoln have got Street playing in some kind of right wing position. Doesn't make sense to me.. subbed-off on 46 yesterday.

Didn’t he play on the wing in his first half dozen performances for us before the penny dropped with McCann?
-
Yeah McCann said he can play anywhere upfront but having watched him he’s never a winger. Clearly a like leading number 9
-
Bit of a thrashing for Ando, Marquis and Biggins today at Tranmere. 4-0!
-
Hiwula I think is trial at Boston United this week, and played yesterday in their match against Sheffield United u21s.
Signed a one year deal at Boston United in the National League.

he was pretty useful at Portsmouth but once he signed for us something happened and was never the same again hope he can regain his form

Lost again last night, 3-1 to Tranmere. Big Tom got booked again.

He looked good in his first game or two and then Wellens called him a circus act in the DFP and was never the same player, IIRC.

Newcastle and Villa agree fee of £43 million for Ramsey.

Missed this earlier in the window - Tiago Çukur has signed for Fatih Karagümrük S.K. in the Süper Lig. They open their season tomorrow away at Galatasaray.

I wonder if he will wear the Fatih badge with pride.
Quite appropriate really.
-
He’s my favourite ever Turkish player, superb goalscorer.
-
Jon Taylor joined Radcliffe in the National League North.
Dan Gardner signed for Radcliffe FC as well.
-
Josh Martin has signed a one year deal with Cheltenham Town. Good move for him. They were looking at Joe Dodoo for a few weeks on trial, but perhaps Martin has been the preference for them.
-
Joe Dodoo has signed for Alfreton , Jordi Hiuwla has signed for Boston United
-
That is quite a long drop for Dodoo. He was on trial at Cheltenham Town a few weeks ago, and now signs for Alfreton Town in National League North. Both sides at this early stage helping prop up tables of their respective leagues.
-
Madger Gomes has signed for Kuala Lumpur City FC in the Malaysia Super League.
-
An obscure one CBCB would be proud of.
Alex Peterson has signed for Doncaster City.
-
Lee Tomlin named assistant manager at Morecambe.
-
Kyle Hurst scored the opener today for Gateshead at home to Aldershot Town.

Teddy Sherman-Lowe scores an own goal.

Anyone else read Peter Kitchens book? My very first Rovers hero and a perfect gentleman. It’s a great read that I’d recommend to any Rovers fan.

Kwame Thomas and Aidan Barlow both on the scoresheet today

I think that it is called the Goal Gourmet. I bought it at Belle Vue and Kitchen signed it.

It's remarkably badly sub edited. But then it was put together by an Orient fan...

Stockport only got him in as a stop gap to cover injury.

Josef Bursik, remember him? Apparently at Club Bruge has transferred to Portsmouth.

Yes, Bob. On loan to us from Stoke in the Covid season.
-
Ethan Ennis going on loan to Fleetwood.

Entirely unsurprisingly, Devante Cole has been signed by Darren Moore.

Signed for Exeter City. Good move for him to get back into League One.
-
Ethan Ennis going on loan to Fleetwood.
He wasn’t ready to start for us but I liked his work rate and attitude. People forget he got the assist for Sharp’s Bradford goal with a clever header.
Hope he does well.
-
Charlie Wellens, son of Richie, scored 93rd minute winner for Orient away at Port Vale.
-
Street sent off. Oluwu on bench.

Not that long ago, they would have added quality. The fact that this is no longer the case shows how we’ve moved on, especially in the last 18 months. Age is of course another factor and they are two players who I feel gave us good service in their prime.
-
Street sent off. Oluwu on bench.
One is probably fed up because he couldn’t come back to Rovers, the other did well to be on a bench, as he’d be nowhere near ours behind O’Riordon Pearson Grehan and McGrath.
-
Herbie Kane scored today for Udders.

Hiwula scored for Boston today in a 3-1 defeat.
Alfie Beeston scored for Sunny in an abandoned game.

Alfie Beeston scored for Sunny in an abandoned game.
Yes and have you read the stories behind this and their previously abandoned game? I don’t think I’ve seen any mention on here, although I might be wrong. The first abandonment seems to have been justifiable, but the second one was the result of the opposition refusing to return to the pitch after an injury. I think we’d be up in arms. https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/live/cz717vwg410t

And it was injury time when they did refuse. I think I read somewhere that the reason for the refusal to reappear was that they were upset after the injury. Bloody good job they weren't seeing what happened to David Busst then...
The FL should penalise em and award the game to Scunny.

I think the National League would have somethnig to say about that. ;)
-
If Scunny aren't awarded the win, then the people running the National League must have less then 3 brain cells between them.
-
Faal and Marosi, getting blasted by Vale fans on the socials.
-
Former player Joe Wright had a great game for is former club. Bradford won’t have been too happy about it though
-
I am watching Ethan Galbraith (remember him?) playing for Northern Ireland against Germany in Cologne. It's 1-1, and I wouldn't be surprised to see NI take something from this game. It's far from a vintage German team.

Jack Goodman has signed for Mansfield U21s but gone straight back to Basford on loan.

Is that not just Mansfield Town?

He must be no age at all. Poor guy. YTV goal of the season 1992/93 I seem to recall. A rocket.

Very sad news. Used to socialise with Mark with his wife being a former work colleague. Lovely fella. Thoughts go to his family. RiP.
