Title: The Ex Player Thread
Post by: Fal on August 16, 2024, 10:44:40 am
See so many new topics when an ex player scores, assists, transfers, gets injured so why not keep it in one place.

On that note Joe Wright scored the winner for Kilmarnock last night in the Europa Conference League, Deji Sotana is out for the season with an ACL injury and Alfie May scored from the spot for Birmingham last weekend.

Billy Paynter is the new manager of Connah's Quay Nomads in the Cymru Premier. Nomads are the current Welsh Cup holders and have been the only side to really challenge TNS' dominance in recent seasons.

His first game was today, a local derby against Flint Town United (managed by another ex-Rover, and former Rovers team-mate of Paynter, Lee Fowler) at the ground the two sides share; Paynter's Nomads won 1-0.

That’s an excellent call DM.

I always thought AW was a ‘class act’ for us. He would score goals from any angle, always ‘happy’ to play second fiddle to Marquis or indeed May.

You could bring him on with 10 minutes to play & know he had clearly been watching the game ‘intently from the dug out’ so knew where to put himself in the best position to affect the game, on one ‘special occasion’ (the opponents elude me) he scored the winner in 90+ minutes to snatch victory from the jaws of defeat,

A man who was born to be & clearly wants to be a footballer for ‘ever & a day’.

Hat’s off to you Andy Williams, you ‘owe us nothing’ we owe you much.

Scunny-supporting mate informs me the team of Andy Butler and John Schofield are quickly losing support over there. Rumours of losing the dressing room, a divided cliquey squad constantly falling out, and a formation that the players don't want to play all sound familiar from Butler's time in the dugout here.

They are only 2 points off Curzon Ashton at the top, although they are bang out of form and a lot of teams around them have games in hand. Looking like it might be the play-off lottery again.

He wasn't a great finisher generally. But what he did have was bags of energy and commitment and a great football brain that meant he was always in the right position to get a shot on goal. All that goes out the window when it comes to penalty taking though.

Marquis has a career penalty success rate of 60 per cent and a penalty success rate of 42 per cent for us. These are normal time statistics, so his miss against Charlton in the semi final second leg isn’t included, which will drag his statistics down further.

Is that from visits to Aachen & Maastricht Bob? Roda are in Kerkrade - the strange place with the Dutch-German border running down the centre of a long urban road - the place on the German side is called Herzogenrath. Sittard is very close by and Colin Cramb and Mike Jeffrey have both played for Fortuna Sittard.

Also saw Dire Straits live in the Roda Hal in the late 1970's before they got really famous

Thanks for that, DU. A great finish from Danny. By God though, a serious lack of attendance there for a top of the table clash. There couldn't have been much more than 1000.

Linfield have the largest attendances - they play at Windsor Park, about 18K capacity, but only average about 3K

Glentoran are averaging about 2500 these days, but the 'big-two' Glentoran-Linfield matches (4 times in the league each season) often have a full house of 6K at Glentoran, or an attendance of 8K at Windsor

Glentoran are the best supported club in Northern Ireland, but Linfield get bigger crowds because they attract more away supporters because the added bonus of going to the national stadium than to the likes of Loughall or Carrick.
Next season the crowds at Coleraine will improve as they bringing in a raft of new players including Joel Cooper from Linfield, who is just about the best player in the league, their manager is Dean Sheils. Also Coleraine is a stand alone club in its own town, where as Glentoran, Linfield, Crusaders and Cliftonville are all in Belfast.
Also if the Irish league was played on a Friday night or a Sunday afternoon the crowds would improve considerably because as DU will echo there is a massive amount of junior football played in N.Ireland, every village seems to have a team, taking supporters away from attending senior football.

Couldn't agree more.
I saw him play when I was a little kid.
He looked good to me but I was too young to appreciate just how good.
As I grew older I realised what a brilliant keeper he was.
And a man of many contrasts...a hard man, but also kind and gentle, and emotional.
Obviously incredibly brave to do what he did.
Munich affected him greatly and he was never able to recall the occasion without a quiver in his voice.
Yet only four months later, while still suffering from the trauma of the crash, he was named the best goalkeeper in the 1958 World Cup.
Magnificent keeper - a true Rovers legend - and a magnificent man.

I doubt any manager would pressure a player with such a poor penalty return into taking them.  I can only suppose that Marquis still wants the penalties for no reason other than to boost his goals tally and sod the good of the team.

Changing the subject slightly, I just had a look at the National League table after that result last night.

Is it time for a re-vamp of the promotion / play-off system in the NL?

I would advocate 2 teams being automatically promoted, and those finishing in 3rd-6th places competing in a 'traditional' play-off format for a 3rd promotion spot.

As the table stands now, Southend in 7th place would get a play-off spot despite being TWENTY-SIX points behind 2nd-placed York City, who are also in the play-offs of course.
That can't be right, surely?

Obviously it would mean 3 teams being relegated from the EFL but in my opinion than would simply enhance the status of the NL as a new 'League 3', and maybe remove some of the stigma of being relegated from League 2, with that 'our world has ended' feeling for the likes of Carlisle this season.

At the start of the season the rules are set and it happens every so often with the play offs that a team scrapes into the last place on goal difference or a 90th minute equaliser, then goes on and wins the playoffs. I’m all for promotion and relegation but a lot of the teams that come up have no history or big enough fan base to maintain a league position, some clubs bankrupt themselves trying to do it.

While I don't disagree with what you are saying DIII, since promotion from Tier 5 to Football League stated in 1986-87, not one team that has been promoted has been relegated immediately (Macclesfield 22nd in 2018-19 the lowest 'debut' season). Probably the 'bounce' effect.

Sutton with 3 seasons is the shortest stay in the FL so far.

I always thought John would end up higher up the pyramid than us. I remember one of his early games, away at Ipswich when we drew 0-0 and he was absolutely immense at centre half. Never seemed up to it at LB, though, so it’s surprising that’s where he’s ended up playing.

Think you’re confusing a couple of separate things there, Steve, or possibly missing an “and”. Steer did play in the PL for Villa, but very briefly - 2 starts 7 years apart with an 8 minute substitute appearance in between. Their 10 game winning run came when in the Championship, but he was in goal for that run.

Dodoo released by Solihull Moors. You do wonder what kind of life that is for players like him. Playing games all over the place for a bit of cash. Since he left us he has played in the Turkish Cypriot league, Burton Albion, then didn't play for months, and then moonlighted at Solihull Moors at the end of the season. Will probably get half decent cash on short term deals but he is still just about in his 20s and he's jobbing around the leagues trying to find a few quid.

Shows the value of trying to make some of the loan deals permanent. Worked for us with Whiteman. Galbraith ended up going on a free from Manchester United after we’d played a key role in his development, but it’s Leyton Orient that benefit the most as they took him on a contract. Wasn’t it just half a season?

Goes to show that paying big money for a striker just because they’ve hit a bit of form and are top of the scoring charts mid-season is dumb. But most fans would want their club to do it.

The thinking is they have signed a load of big names who are either past it or don't fit with Appleton's preferred style of play. Plus in the last couple of years there is a trend of sides dropping into L2 then being relegated again. I can see it.

Heard the lads on NTT20 tout them for relegation saying similar. Adding that Stubbs and Anderson were “cloggers”, as if other L2 centre halves play like prime Beckenbauer

Reckon they just need someone quick to play alongside Marquis.

An Aiden Barlow v Joe Dodoo and John Bostock showdown is currently happening in the National League.

Dodoo came on to replace an injured Solihull player and has subsequently been subbed off injured himself.

Has been on trial at Cheltenham Town but didn't make their squad last weekend. Doesn't look like it has worked out there, yet at least.

Yes and have you read the stories behind this and their previously abandoned game? I don’t think I’ve seen any mention on here, although I might be wrong. The first abandonment seems to have been justifiable, but the second one was the result of the opposition refusing to return to the pitch after an injury. If Scunny aren't awarded the win, then the people running the National League must have less then 3 brain cells between them.

Former player Joe Wright had a great game for is former club. Bradford won’t have been too happy about it though

I am watching Ethan Galbraith (remember him?) playing for Northern Ireland against Germany in Cologne. It's 1-1, and I  wouldn't be surprised to see NI take something from this game. It's far from a vintage German team.

How do Mansfield U21’s make a signing?
Is that not just Mansfield Town?

Tyler Roberts was a second half sub for Tamworth who were lambs to the slaughter in a 4-0 defeat at York in midweek.

He must be no age at all. Poor guy. YTV goal of the season 1992/93 I seem to recall. A rocket.

Very sad news. Used to socialise with Mark with his wife being a former work colleague. Lovely fella. Thoughts go to his family. RiP.
